Facebook F8: CEO Mark Zuckerberg stresses on private social platform, announces redesign across apps and services
Facebook seems to have learnt from its mistakes. After a stressful year, which was plagued with several controversies, the social media giant looks to work upon the privacy and safety of the people that it serves. At the annual F8 conference, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg reiterated his previous stance stressing on privacy-focussed social platform. The event saw the announcement of several features that will let users “interact privately.”
“I believe the future is private. I know that we don't exactly have the strongest reputation on privacy right now, to put it lightly. At the end of the day, this isn't just about building some new products. It's a major shift in how we run this company,” Zuckerberg said as he set the tone for new new announcements regarding Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. The conference saw updates in areas that have already been talked about previously, like privacy, integration of three platforms into one, among others.
“For the last 15 years, we've built Facebook and Instagram into digital equivalents of the town square, where you can interact with lots of people at once. Now we're focused on building the digital equivalent of the living room, where you can interact in all the ways you'd want privately -- from messaging and stories to secure payments and more,” Zuckerberg said. To bring this “vision to life,” the company announced several design and feature changes, like making end-to-end encryption the default into its platforms.
Facebook and MessengerZuckerberg said that the company is committed to protect private conversations “for billions of people around the world,” but by introducing tools to to do, the platform may also provide a haven for criminals and those who want to spread hate. “A few years ago, we probably would have just rolled this out and then tried to adjust and address issues as they came up. Now we're going out and consulting with experts and trying to make sure that we get this balance right,” he said. Zuckerberg also announced that both the app and the desktop version would receive a major redesign called FB5, with Groups and Events at the centre of it all. The mobile redesign will have an interactive logo that ditches the old blue colour scheme.
WhatsApp and InstagramThe first major overhaul that WhatsApp may get is the default end-to-end encryption into the platform. Facebook also announced WhatsApp support on its video-calling device Portal, and said the calls on the platform would also be encrypted. Further, Facebook is also testing a payment product on WhatsApp in India, which could expand to other countries this year. Meanwhile, on Instagram, Facebook has launched a shopping channel that will give users a way to shop from the creators and influencers from the app itself. There is a new camera mode and a donation feature.
Most importantly, Facebook is going to make its messaging services interoperable, which means that Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp will be interconnected. According to Asha Sharma, Messenger's Head of Consumer Product, in the future, users will soon be able to send messages across the three different messaging platforms, and all the messages will be end-to-end encrypted. The company hasn’t given a specific timeline for the roll-out of this integration, but Zuckerberg said it could take quite some time.

Facebooks Portal video-calling devices to be sold internationally, get WhatsApp support
Facebook made a whole bunch of announcements last evening at its F8 developer conference in San Jose, California, including the much-rumoured integration of Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp messaging services. One of them is that the company’s “Portal” video-calling devices will be sold in Canada and Europe starting sometime later this year. In addition, the devices are expected to support WhatsApp calls, which means the calls will be end-to-end encrypted.
The Mark Zuckerburg-led American social media company launched its Portal video-calling devices in the US in early October last year. At the time of launch, the Portal was priced at $199 (Rs 14,700 approx) and the Portal+ was priced at $349 (Rs 25,900 approx). The company also offered both devices as a bundled offer at $298 (Rs 22,000 approx). Facebook announced the Portal devices in a renewed effort to assure its customers of complete data privacy inside the Facebook world while calling and messaging.
A few months before launching the Portal devices, Facebook was in the soup for letting user data leak out of Facebook. More specifically, the company was involved in a major political scandal when everyone came to know of Cambridge Analytica’s secret harvesting of personal user data through Facebook. Since then, Facebook has been making an extra effort to reassure its customers of complete data privacy and security. “We know that privacy and security are important when you bring new technology into your home. That’s why we designed Portal with tools that give you control,” Facebook said at the time of the launch.
The camera and microphone on the two Portal devices can be disabled with the push of a hardware button on the body of the device. They also come with a camera cover for added privacy. While the Portal comes with a 10-inch 720p display, the Portal+ comes with a 15-inch Full HD display. According to Facebook, both devices feature Smart Camera, which focusses on the most appropriate subject in any video call scene. They also feature Amazon Alexa for voice command-based functions. There’s no information available yet on whether the two Portal devices will come to India.

Instagram gets a camera revamp, new Shopping and Donation features at Facebook F8
Instagram announced some new features at Facebook’s ongoing F8 developer conference, where the main Facebook app also received a fresh coat of paint and a bunch of new features were announced for Messenger.
For Instagram, the first big change comes in the form of a redesigned camera with a new Create Mode. The new camera design and the Create Mode will appear on the Instagram app in the coming weeks. This new camera will make it easier to use popular creative tools like effects and interactive stickers. Create Mode will help users make stories more easily. All story creation tools will be available in a single tray at the bottom of the Instagram camera, making them accessible easier than before.
Secondly, Instagram users will also get the ability to shop from creators and influencers without leaving their posts. “Today, creators tag the brands they are wearing, add details in the caption and respond to countless comments and DMs. With the ability to tag exactly what they're wearing, creators can get back to expressing themselves and sharing what's on their mind, which will make their followers happy too,” Instagram noted in a blog post. The new shopping feature on Instagram will initially be enabled for select brands. Users can find the complete brand list here.
Thirdly, Instagram introduced new Donation stickers, which we knew were in the works for a while. Users will find a Donation sticker in the Stories tab and can start raising money for a non-profit they care about. The Donations sticker will only be available in the US for now and will roll out to other countries later.

Facebook redesigns Facebook: Heres how Events and Groups will take centre stage
At Facebook’s annual developer conference, F8, the company has announced a slew of big changes that are aimed at making all of its platforms - Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Facebook itself - more social, yet private. Facebook will transition into a more “privacy-focused communications platform,” Mark Zuckerberg told audiences at F8.
To this effect, the main Facebook platform, both the app and the desktop, are receiving a major redesign, with Groups and Events at the centre of it all.
Facebook is rolling out FB5 (Facebook 5), a fresh design that’s aimed at being simpler and faster, with an emphasis on communities. Groups are now front and centre with the new Groups tab. The tab now shows a personalised feed of activity across all groups a user is a part of. A new discovery tool provides recommendations that help users find groups they could be interested in.
“Today, more than 400 million people on Facebook belong to a group that they find meaningful,” Facebook said in a press statement.
Facebook is also making it easier to get relevant group recommendations in different areas of the app like - Marketplace, Today In, the Gaming tab, and Facebook Watch. Users can expect to see more content from their groups in their News Feed. Content from the News Feed will also be shareable with groups easily.
Within Groups, Facebook is introducing specific features for communities. For instance, members on health support groups will be able to post questions and share information while keeping their identities anonymous. Job groups will get a new template for employers to post openings. Like Linkedin, people will be able to apply for jobs directly through Facebook. Gaming groups on the platform will get a new chat feature so members can create threads for different topics within the group.
Facebook Live will also enable buyers to ask questions and place orders from product-related lives without leaving the livestream.
Further, Facebook wants you to meet new people so the platform now has a place to do just that. “Meet New Friends” on Facebook will help people start friendships with new people from their shared communities like a school, workplace or city. It’s an opt-in feature, so users will only see other people that are open to meeting new friends, and vice versa. Facebook is currently testing Meet New Friends and will roll it out wider soon. “We will also be integrating Facebook Groups, making it possible to meet new friends from your most meaningful communities on Facebook,” Facebook noted.
As far as events are concerned, there’s a new Events tab on Facebook. This will let users see what’s happening around them, get recommendations, discover local businesses, and coordinate with friends to make plans to get together. The new Events tab will be placed next to the new Groups tab in the app.
Facebook says that people will start seeing some of these redesign updates in the Facebook app immediately, while the new desktop site will come in the next few months.

Facebook will soon integrate Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp chats: Heres everything new headed to Messenger 5
Facebook has made a bunch of announcements at its ongoing F8 annual developer conference. While the keynote opened with CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressing on a privacy-focussed platform, there were a lot of new developments shared as far as all of Facebook’s products are concerned.
Starting with Messenger, Facebook finally shared plans about integrating the chat app with Instagram and WhatsApp. It was rumoured for a long time that Facebook will make all the three apps interoperable and that’s exactly what’s coming - the ability to chat and make calls across Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.
"We believe people should be able to talk to anyone anywhere," Messenger's Head of Consumer Product, Asha Sharma, said while announcing all the new features coming to Messenger 5.
Watching Videos together in real-time on Facebook Messenger
One of the biggest changes coming to Messenger is that it will now be a faster and lighter app. Facebook is re-building the architecture of the Messenger app from ground up to make it faster and lighter. Facebook has internally named the new, faster Messenger “Lightspeed” as it will launch in under 2 seconds and will be less than 30MB in size.
Conversations in Messenger will soon be end-to-end encrypted as are on WhatsApp. This comes in tow with Facebook’s new privacy mantra, given how the company’s platforms have been at the centre of multiple privacy breaches and controversies over the past year.
Another new feature headed to Messenger is to have a Watch Party through the chat platform. Users will be able to easily share videos from Facebook to Messenger and watch them together (see image above) with their friends and family in real time, during a chat or a video call. Facebook is currently testing this feature and will roll it out later this year.
Messenger Desktop App
Later this year, Messenger will be available as a desktop app as well. Users will be able to download the Messenger desktop app on both macOS and Windows to make “group video calls, collaborate on projects or multi-task while chatting in Messenger”. Facebook Messenger for desktop will be rolling out globally later this year.
Further, Messenger is introducing a dedicated space where users can discover Stories, messages, images and videos with their closest friends and family. What looks like the Close Friends feature from Instagram and Facebook, users will be able to share snippets from their day and choose exactly who sees what you post. This feature will roll out later this year.
Close Friends on Messenger
Lastly, Facebook is adding lead generation templates to Ads Manager. Through this, businesses on Messenger can easily create an ad that drives people to a simple Q&A on the platform to learn more about their customers.
It will also be easier to book an appointment with businesses on Messenger as it will host an appointment experience so people can book appointments within a Messenger conversation.

HiSilicon Kirin 985 to be manufactured with 5G modem from Q3 2019: Report
Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 985 chipset will be manufactured with 5G modem using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC's) new 7nm fabrication process, and it will go into mass production from the third quarter of this year, a media report in CNMO.com has said. TSMC will use 7nm Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) process (called N7+), along with the Flip-Chip Package-on-Package (FC-PoP) process that allows vertical stacking of transistors.
A combination of EUV (which increases the accuracy of transistor placement) and FC-PoP manufacturing processes means that the transistor density on the chip will be increased by 20 percent resulting in better performance and lower energy consumption. The news comes almost two weeks after a report in Chinese news outlet Commercial Times claimed the Kirin 985 chipset will enter into mass production in the second half of 2019.
Further, it has been reported that Huawei will bring the HiSilicon Kirin 985 in the Mate 30 series of phones. The first mention of Kirin chips with 5G modems was back in November when it was thought that Kirin 990 will succeed the Kirin 980. Interestingly, CNMO.com was also the source of the development. It said that HiSilicon had invested around CNY200 million (approx Rs 209 crore) in research and development of the processor.
As mentioned, the next Kirin flagship is touted to feature the Balong 5000 modem, which Huawei announced alongside the Kirin 980, to help achieve 5G speeds. Huawei said that the Balong 5000 supports 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G on a single chip, and reduces latency as well as power consumption when exchanging data between different modes. At Sub-6 GHz (low-frequency bands, the main spectrum used for 5G), it is claimed that the Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. On mmWave spectrum (high-frequency bands used as extended spectrum for 5G), Balong 5000 is said to achieve download speeds up to 6.5 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than top 4G LTE speeds.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera was used to shoot the cover of Harpers Bazaar May 2019 issue
The OnePlus 7 launch is looming large over us and every few days, a new feature of the upcoming flagship is being disseminated by the brand to create hype leading up to the launch. After announcing that the OnePlus 7 Pro’s display has been rated A+ by DisplayMate, and confirming triple cameras on the back via a newspaper ad, it was revealed the latest cover photo of Harper’s Bazaar magazine was shot using the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The magazine announced on social media that the cover photo of their latest issue featuring actor and activist Jameela Jamil, was shot using the OnePlus 7 Pro. The actor insisted that the photos required no digital retouching or airbrushing.
The photograph was shot with Jameela in Los Angeles, on a rooftop terrace, according to an ANI report.
“It’s a picture-perfect camera, and the output was amazing. I could not believe we had an option to shoot RAW images without having to connect it to an app or computer. We used the photo to capture behind-the-scenes clips and notcied the video was even better,” Harper’s Bazaar’s creative director said in a press release.
This is not the first time OnePlus has collaborated with a fashion magazine to show off its camera prowess. Back when the OnePlus 6 was launching, the company did a similar collaboration with Vogue India magazine where actor Aditi Rao Hyadri’s photograph was taken with the OnePlus 6 for the magazine’s cover photo for the May 2018 issue.
We have asked OnePlus for a comment regarding the use of professional lighting, post-processing and the exif inforrmation of the photo. The article will be updated with more information as and when we receive it.
OnePlus 7 Pro camera specsThe cover photo indicates the OnePlus 7 Pro will come with a better camera sensor that can shoot in RAW format. The phone might even offer new lenses. So far, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera will offer 3x zoom as well as a triple-camera setup on the back. This was also confirmed by the full-page ad on the New York Times on Tuesday where the company published the schematics of the upcoming flagship. The schematics reveal that the OnePlus 7 Pro will not only come with a triple-camera setup, but also sport a pop-up selfie camera, allowing the display to stretch entirely to the edges.
While we are still awaiting key details of the camera hardware, the photo makes us expect a good improvement in camera performance over the OnePlus 6T. The phone is likely to bring better zoom as well as better low-light shooting capabilities as indicated by an image shared by OnePlus product manager Szymon Kopec on Twitter.
It’s likely that the OnePlus 7 Pro will incorporate the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that’s also there on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Honor View20. Furthermore, a 16MP wide-angel camera is also expected as part of the camera stack along with an 8MP telephoto lens offering 3X zoom.
Alongside the OnePlus 7 Pro, the company is also expected to launch the OnePlus 7, marking the first time that the company will launch two phones under one series. The OnePlus 7, based on leaks and rumours, is likely to come with a dual-camera unit.
OnePlus 7 Pro specsIn addition to an upgraded camera, the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro, like all its predecessor, will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Furthermore, the phone is expected to come with a display with a refresh rate of 90Hz which should result in a smoother viewing experience. Apart from this, we expect the upcoming flagships to offer at least 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage, along with an in-display fingerprint sensor and Warp Charging.
OnePlus 7 launchThe OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro will be announced simultaneously in three cities — Bangalore, New York and London on May 14. Fans can buy tickets for the Bangalore event from the company’s e-commerce site, and those won’t be able to attend the launch in person can tune in to a live stream. The event starts at 8:15PM.

Realme X will be the companys upcoming phone to feature bezel-less display, pop-up camera
Realme is expanding its services and products to the Chinese market and it recently posted a new teaser video on its Weibo page. The video also showed off a new phone that is the company’s first handset to feature a nearly bezel-less design and a pop-up front facing camera. The phone was linked to the Realme handset featuring model number RMX1901, which showed up on a TENAA listing as the images on the registration website closely resembles the handset shown in the video. Now, the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Xu Qi Chase, has confirmed via a Weibo post that the company’s upcoming phone would be called the Realme X.
It is highly possible that the smartphone with a pop-up camera in the Realme promo video is the Realme X. Qi’s post also suggests that the Realme X is a bezel-less display that delivers a full-screen experience. As per the TENAA listing, the handset might come equipped with a 6.5-inch display OLED display that sports a Full HD+ resolution. The images hint at the absence of a notch, again hinting at the presence of a pop-up camera for the front shooter. Additionally, no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor can be spotted on the phone’s back and the device is speculated to come equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The upcoming Realme handset is rumoured to be a flagship device, which could be running on the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC. Images of the phone via TENAA suggest it could come equipped with a dual-rear camera setup and a single 16MP sensor on the front that is housed within the notch. The phone might be backed by a 3680 mAh battery, that is said to support VOOC fast charging. It is expected to launch running on ColorOS 6, on top of Android 9 Pie.
In other Realme news, the company’s latest phone in India, the Realme 3 Pro has received a new software update. The new patch enables recording super slow-motion videos on the device, which are shot at 960 fps. Additionally, the update brings improvements to the phone’s camera and adds to the system’s stability. The latest update patch for the device was rolled out on the same day it was made available for purchase for the first time in the country.

Data breach exposes details of 80 million US households on Microsoft servers
US-based firm vpnMentor's research team has discovered a hack that has exposed a database of 80 million (nearly 65 percent) American households. The unprotected 24GB database, hosted on Microsoft Cloud servers, includes the number of people living in each household with their full names, their marital status, income bracket, age, and more. While some information is available freely, other data like title, gender, etc are coded.
What’s interesting is that the database is still unidentified, however, given the terminology used (like “member_code” and “score”), it appears that this database belongs to some kind of service that has members in it and they get scores. vpnMentor believes that it is the first time a breach of this size has included peoples’ names, addresses, and income, and dubs the open database as a goldmine for identity thieves and other attackers.
How can this impact users? This type of open database can give access to users’ full name that can be used to guess their email addresses. “Many people use name.familyname@gmail.com as their email address. While this makes sense, it also makes you easy to identify,” the firm said. Users can also become vulnerable to phishing scams, and ransomware. With access to the information related to their income information, attackers will be well aware of how much they can extort money out of the victims.
Real world threatIf you search a person with his/her name and city on Google, scores of links (like profiles and photos on social media platforms) open up revealing a lot about that person. “Let’s assume you haven’t updated the security settings on your Facebook profile for a while, so your posts are visible to people you’re not friends with. Everything you post is open to the internet – including the vacation photos you uploaded that morning. The geotag shows that you’re thousands of miles away from home,” the firm said. Since there’s a full address in the database, thieves know where you live, and a quick Google search has shown that you are not at home, you automatically become a prime target for attack.
vpnMentor says that it wants to contact this database’s owners, and is seeking help “solve the riddle”.

Samsung patent hints at a smartphone with wraparound display
Global smartphone shipments continue to decline and phone manufacturers have realised that there’s a dire need for innovation in their offerings. Samsung is one of the companies that is working on a foldable phone with the hope of offering a new take on the same old form factor. While the super expensive Samsung Galaxy Fold is off to a rocky start, it seems like the South Korean tech company might soon look into other ideas. As per a new patent filed by the company, reported by LetsGoDigital, it might be working on a handset where the display wraps around an edge and extends to the device’s back. The patent is titled 'Electronic Device Having Plurality of Display and Method for Controlling Same'.
The patent images suggest Samsung could be working on a design that is somewhat similar to the Vivo Nex Dual Display smartphone. However, while the Vivo Nex features a secondary display on the back, the Samsung patent suggests that there could be three edges that sport a display. The patent describes the phone with "a display configured to include a first surface in a first direction, a second surface in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and a third surface enclosing at least a portion of the space formed between the first surface and the second surface." This third surface could be an edge that connects the first and second surface.
The drawings above suggest how the displays on the phone could be used to capture photos or quickly glance at a notification. If Samsung does end up integrating the patented design, it would be interesting to see how it is actually implemented. When spent some time with the Vivo Nex Dual Display, we found that the dual display on the device was useful in only a handful of situations. You can read our feature on the Vivo Nex Dual Display here.

Redmis Snapdragon 855 SoC-powered flagship being stocked in abundance, confirms company official
A day after Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi officially teased a device said to be a flagship phone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 under the hood, the company’s top executive has said that abundant stocks of the phone are already being prepared. This suggests that Redmi is forecasting big order numbers for the phone and wants to be well-prepared for the high-demand.
A person asked Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing about the stock of the flagship model on Chinese social media website Weibo (via mydrivers.com). The executive apparently replied that the company is preparing enough stock of the device. Lu also said that the phone will be competitively priced. Xiaomi’s other sub-brand Pocophone did something similar when it launched the Poco F1 for Rs 20,999 in India last year.
The Redmi phone is not only the first flagship by the now-independent brand that operates under Xiaomi, but it will be the first to offer a pop-up selfie camera. The tech is not new and several phones-makers have already launched their versions of the pop-up selfie cameras. Moreover, Redmi has laid emphasis on the speed and performance of the device.
As far as the specs of the yet unidentified Redmi flagship, which could possibly be called the Redmi Pro 2, are concerned, the phone will come with a 6.39-inch display and it’s flagship processor is claimed to be accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. In the camera department, the phone is tipped to come loaded with a 32MP shooter on the front and a triple-camera setup at the back, including a 48MP camera, an 8MP secondary sensor and another 13MP camera on the back.
The phone will reportedly feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC and thanks to the edge-to-edge display, the phone would offer a higher screen-to-body ratio. It is also being claimed that Redmi is working to launch a device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor. It is expected to come with a notch-less display, pop-up cameras on the front and a triple-camera setup on the back.

Chrome inception bar phishing method replaces real address bar with a fake one
Chrome is one of the most widely used browsers on mobile phones and is generally considered safe as it is developed and maintained by Google. However, developer Jim Fisher has found a new exploit, which showcases how an attacker could emulate the browser’s address bar to impersonate a legit website. While this might not sound scary, the way Fisher demonstrated its application in a proof of concept video might make some privacy-centric users double check the address bar before entering any personal information on a website. Using few web designing skills and tricks, the developer created a website that replaces Chrome’s address bar and its UI.
Fisher calls the new phishing method ‘The inception bar'. One can visit the developer's website on mobile phones here to experience how someone could modify their site to lock a user in. He explains that when one scrolls down on a webpage in Chrome, the URL bar is hidden and reappears when one scrolls back up. However, a phishing site can display its own fake URL bar when the user scrolls down and trick Chrome into not displaying the original address bar when a user scrolls up. Unfortunately, this too can be prevented with some clever programming as Fisher added extra tall padding element on top of the site so that users are scrolled back down to where the content starts and it looks like a page refresh.
‘In my proof-of-concept, I’ve just screenshotted Chrome’s URL bar on the HSBC website, then inserted that into this webpage. With a little more effort, the page could detect which browser it’s in, and forge an inception bar for that browser. With yet more effort, the inception bar could be made interactive. Even if the user isn’t fooled by the current page, you can get another try after the user enters “gmail.com” in the inception bar!,” state’s Fisher’s blog post. You can watch his proof of concept video here.
The developer thinks this method can be a serious security flaw since he created it and accidentally used it a few times. Users can only verify the legitimacy of an address bar when the page loads, as when they scroll down, the address bar is replaced. As 9to5Google notes, one can lock and unlock their phone to force Chrome for Android to display the real address bar and the fake one.

Honor 20 Pro latest render suggests periscope camera, hints at black colour option
Huawei sub-brand Honor will launch the Honor 20 series phones on May 21 in London. The series is said to include three phones, the Honor 20i (already launched in China), the Honor 20 and the Honor 20 Pro. The Pro variant is said to be a camera-centric device and the latest leak has suggested that it will sport a periscopic camera just like we have seen in the recently-launched Huawei P30 Pro.
The renders show that the AI Vision camera module has a total of four sensors, out of which three are the shooters. The one on the top with square-shaped chamber is said to be the periscopic camera with a 10x lens. The phone is touted to borrow the Sony IMX600 40-megapixel camera sensor that is found in the P30 Pro. The Time of Flight (ToF) sensor sits right in between the second and third sensors which are aligned vertically on the top left corner.
The phone is expected to come with 6.5-inch OLED panel and a 4,000mAh battery capacity. Under the hood, the phone could have the Kirin 980 SoC along with up to 8GB of RAM. Further, the phone has already been leaked in Green/Blue and in Pearl White colours, and the latest renders shows the phone in Black colour. Further, the Honor 20i may also make a global appearance under the name Honor 20 Lite.
Honor 20i was launched earlier this month in China with a 32MP selfie shooter and up to 6GB of RAM. It sports a 6.21-inch full HD+ IPS LCD display with a u-shaped notch. Under the hood, the phone has mid-range Kirin 710 mobile platform, along with up to 6GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage. The phone is fueled by a 3,4,000mAh battery. The Honor 20i sports a triple camera setup, which includes 24MP primary sensor with a lens having f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP ultra wide-angle lens and 2MP depth sensor.

Airtel Wynk Tube music and video streaming app launched on Android, rivals Tube Music
Airtel has launched its new Wynk Tube music and video streaming app on Android. The new app rivals other video and music streaming services like YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify, among others. One can download the Wynk Tube app from the Google Play Store and similar to YouTube Music, the Wynk Tube app enables users to stream songs from the company’s library of audio and they can also choose to switch to its video, if they want. Airtel says that the app had 10,000 beta users in January and a complete launch happened on April 11.
As per the telco, out of 350 million internet users, there are over 100 million users who steam music in India. The company wants to target the masses and it is aiming to lure users by offering music in regional languages and with features like voice search, tailored music recommendations, easier content discovery, offline downloads and more. Airtel says it has been tweaking the apps’ recommendations engine, which is said to employ machine learning algorithms, since six months to refine and deliver better suggestions every time the app is used. The app will not replace Wynk Music but is an extension to it and is also available for Android Go phones.
Airtel aims to capture users from tier 2 and tier 3 cities with its Wynk Tube app, which is merely 5MB in size and has launched with a library of over 40 lakh songs and related videos. While the apps’ interface language can currently be switched between English and Hindi, it will soon get support for a total of 12 Indic languages including support for Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Bhojpuri and others. The app also pulls locally stored music files so that one need not switch to another app to listen to locally stored audio and also supports Picture-in-Picture mode.

Google Pixel device sales takes a hit in Q1 2019, company confirms hardware launch at IO
The say les of the Google Pixel smartphones took a hit in the first quarter of 2019, the company confirmed during its earnings call. The company further announced the launch of Google hardware product at this year’s I/O scheduled to take place from May 7-9 at company headquarters. Company CFO Ruth Porat suggested that they sold fewer Pixel 3 phones than expected, and his thoughts were echoed by CEO Sundar Pichai, who blamed the drop on ‘headwinds’ that are putting pressure on flagship devices.
“With respect to hardware results, while the first quarter results reflect pressures in the premium smartphone industry, we are pleased with the ongoing momentum for Assistant-enabled home devices, particularly the Home Hub and Mini devices and look forward to our May 7th announcement at I/O from the hardware team,” Porat said, while announcing that Alphabet Inc, posted a net income of $6.6 billion on $36.33 billion in revenue in the Q1 2019.
Contrary to this, Pichai painted a positive picture by adding, “I think we are working through a phase where there is definite year-on-year headwinds. But I do think, especially since the ecosystem is constantly pushing it forward, I continue to be excited about the innovation speed.” Pichai, however, did not explain what “headwinds” caused the drop. “We are still early in our hardware journey. And when I look ahead at the portfolio that we created across Pixel, Home, and Nest, I feel really good about the range of products that we have,” he added.
The news comes at a time when Google is all geared up to launch two mid-range devices Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. These phones have been leaked a lot, and have also been spotted on several certification as well as benchmarking websites. The Google Pixel 3a had also appeared as a link on Google’s own Play Store, and a tipster had also claimed that both the mid-range offerings from the search giant are being tested in India.

Microsoft survey reveals Siri and Google Assistant are the most widely used voice assistants
Microsoft conducted two online surveys. The first one was conducted from March to June 2018 and consisted of over 2,000 responses in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and India. The second one was conducted in the U.S. alone and 5,000 people participated in it. The second online survey went live in February 2019. The key stats found in the survey highlight that 69 percent of respondents have used a digital assistant while 75 per cent of households will have at least one smart speaker by 2020. 41 percent of users reported concerns around trust, privacy and passive listening. Also, consumers will not divulge personally identifiable information without a substantial reward. Over half of consumers expect their digital assistants to help make retail purchases within the next 5 years. It must be noted that the 2000 global respondents are a mix of people from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India. So, this data isn't exactly applicable for the larger Indian population but a niche that are early adopters of smart speakers and can access broadband internet at home.
Speaking about how people are engaging with voice assistants, the survey highlighted that 72 percent of respondents use voice search via a personal digital assistant such as Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant and Cortana. The voice search through a smart home speaker is at 35 percent. 36 percent of those surveyed use voice commands to operate a TV or smart home device that is not a smart home speaker and 31 per cent of voice commands were issued to a vehicle.
Speaking of the most popular digital assistant, the survey notes that Apple Siri and Google Assistant are on top with a share of 36 percent each, followed by Amazon Alexa at 25 per cent. Microsoft Cortana is at 19 per cent and “others” take up one percent. The Microsoft research notes that “The popularity of Siri and Google is likely due to the sheer volume of mobile phones (approximately 250M in the US) when compared with smart speakers (approximately 50M+ in the US). Both Siri and Google are more aligned with mobile phones while Alexa is more closely aligned with smart speakers (though Siri and Google are starting to infiltrate smart speakers, while Alexa can also be used on mobile phones)”.
Even though Alexa can be used on smartphones, it has to be installed and added as an app. Apple and Google provide their voice assistant natively through the smartphone making access to them easy and hands-free when using a voice command. Cortana is present on all Windows 10 PCs. Amazon has dominance in the smart speaker space and so do Apple and Google.
Speaking of smart speakers, the survey found that in 2019 45 percent of people owned a smart speaker and 26 percent are planning to buy one, whereas 29 percent have no plans to purchase one.
Speaking of which smart speakers do people want to buy, the survey says that in 2019 the echo is the most popular with a 43 percent response, and the echo dot has a 43 percent response. The Google home has a mere 17 per cent response and the Google Home Mini has a 31 percent response. The insights provided by the survey do highlight that talking to a digital assistant seems to be the way forward and it just might be the next natural evolution of how we access information.
The survey provides detailed insights into the adoption of smart speakers and digital assistants. However, it would be interesting to see an analysis tailored to the Indian market to understand the smart speaker and digital assistant adoption in the country and which smart speakers do people want to buy?

Realme 3 Pro receives first OTA update, receives support for 960 fps super slow-mo video recording
Realme’s latest smartphone, the Realme 3 Pro, recently went up for sale in India. The company claims that it sold off over 1.7 lakh units of the handset in eight minutes and announced two more ‘surprise’ sales on the same day. Additionally, the phone manufacturer also rolled out an update for the device on the same day, which adds some new features to the phone’s camera. The update carries the build number RMX1851EX_11_A.12 and is 182MB in size. The update brings support for capturing super slow-motion videos at 960fps for the Realme 3 Pro. There are some improvements to the device’s camera quality and clarity, along with improvements to the phone system’s stability.
The update doesn't update the Realme 3 Pro's Android security patch to April. While users of the device should receive a notification when the update is available for their units, they can check if the update is available manually in the Software update tab, in the handset’s settings. One can also download the latest firmware and flash it manually. However, do note that one will need to download the entire build that weighs 2.45GB in size and follow the instructions here to flash it.
The new Realme 3 Pro goes up against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) and other phones in the same price range. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC and was announced in three variants with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It sports a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display with a dewdrop notch design and runs on ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9 Pie. Backed by a 4045mAh battery, the handset comes with VOOC 3.0 fast-charging support.
In terms of optics, the Realme 3 Pro features dual-rear cameras where one is a 16MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture lens, while the other one is a 5MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture lens. On the front, it features a 25MP sensor that is paired with an f2.0 aperture lens, supports AI beautification modes and face unlock. The device also features the Hyper Boost 2.0 software, which the company claims enhances the phone’s speed and gaming experience.

Scientists in Japan want to grow human pancreases in pigs for transplantation: Report
Yes, you read that headline correctly. According to a recent news report by Xinhua, scientists at the University of Tokyo intend to use human stem cells to grow pancreases inside pigs for future transplantation. The first project in such an endeavour that involves growing of human organs inside animals is expected to begin in about a year’s time. The project is pending approval from government and university committees at the moment.
Hiromitsu Nakauchi, one of the professors at the University of Tokyo leading the experimental transplantation project, says that the team will use human-introduced pluripotent stem cells (or iPS cells) to reproduce pancreases. More specifically, the team will inject human iPS cells into a pig embryo that’s genetically modified to lose the ability to develop a pancreas. The team of scientists will then place the embryo in a surrogate sow’s womb. For reference, a sow is a female pig. The team will then remove the foetus before delivery to study the amount of pancreas tissue derived from the human iPS cells and its ability to function.
The team of scientists in Tokyo hopes that these genetically modified pancreases can be used to treat patients with a serious case of diabetes in a period of ten years. According to Xihua’s report, the Ministry of Education and Science in Japan okayed the controversial research process involving the use of animals as hosts for growing human organs on March 1. The ministry’s decision to approve the undertaking of such a project could potentially open more doors for other Japanese researchers with similar experiments and studies.
That said, the Japanese government reportedly still prohibits the placement of fertilised animal eggs containing human cells in human wombs and the use of animals developed through such genetic engineering for the purpose of breeding. Many questions in the realm of ethics have been raised in the past. Recently, scientists in China injected monkeys with human brain genes in an attempt to create transgenic monkeys and study the evolution of human intelligence.

Google Pixel 3a visits Geekbench ahead of expected official unveiling
Google is expected to announce two new smartphones, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL on the first day of Google I/O 2019. However, information regarding the two handsets has been leaking out rapidly ahead of the official reveal. Just recently, we came across two press renders of the Google Pixel 3a that showed off the phone in white and purple colour variants and now, the smartphone has popped up on Geekbench, where some additional information about it has been revealed. The listing suggests that the Pixel 3a is running Android 9 Pie with 4GB RAM. While the processor is not listed, the phone is speculated to be powered by the Snapdragon 670 platform.
The Pixel 3a managed to score 1625 and 5206 in single-core and multi-core Geekbench tests. This is lower than the 1805 and 5790 single and multi-core test numbers of the Pixel 3a XL, which is in line with the rumours that the Pixel 3a XL might come equipped with a more powerful Snapdragon 710 SoC, which is also paired with 4GB of RAM. While the new Geekbench listing doesn’t reveal more about the Pixel 3a, an earlier report suggests that the handset might come equipped with a 5.6-inch OLED display. On the other hand, the Pixel 3a XL is rumoured to sport a 6-inch OLED panel. The two phones are speculated to feature the headphone jack, which Google ditched with the Google Pixel 2 smartphones.
Previously leaked images of the Pixel 3a revealed the phone’s design in its entirety. If the renders are to be believed, the Pixel 3a could sport a design similar to the current Pixel 3. It’s seen with an 18:9 display aspect ratio and comes equipped with a single camera and dual-tone frosted glass on the back.
The fingerprint sensor is also present on the rear, along with the Google logo on the bottom. Renders showing off the device in white colour suggested that its power button could be in contrasting dark orange while it is bright yellow for the purple Google Pixel 3a. Additionally, both new renders of the device suugest May 7 as the set date, which is the first day of Google I/O 2019. This is speculated to be a hint of the date when the new phones could be announced.

Redmi Y3 first sale in India today via Amazon and Micom: Heres everything you need to know
Xiaomi recently unveiled the Redmi 7 and the Redmi Y3 in the Indian market. While the Redmi 7 has already gone on sale, the Redmi Y3 will go on sale for the first time today starting 12 noon. The smartphone will go on sale on Amazon.in and Mi.com. Users can also go to a Mi Home store to get their hands on the device.
The Redmi Y3 is a selfie-centric budget phone with a 32MP front-facing camera which also supports EIS. It will be available in two variants - 3GB RAM + 32GB storage which is priced at Rs 9,999. There is also a 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant priced at Rs 11,999. If you are an Airtel user, you can get up to 1120 GB of 4G data, and unlimited calling upon purchasing the smartphone.
Coming to the specifications of the smartphone, the Redmi Y3 sports a 6.26-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1520x720 accompanied with a Dot Notch. The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone comes with an Aura Prism Design in black, red and blue colours. The back panel of the smartphone comes with a fingerprint sensor and P2i hydrophobic coating is supposed to give it some level of water resistance. The phone also comes with a 3.5mm jack and an IR blaster.
The dual-SIM Redmi Y3 sports an Octa-core Snapdragon 632 SoC, and comes in two RAM and storage variants mentioned above. The phone runs MIUI 10 based on Android Pie 9. A 4000mAh battery powers the entire package. For the optics, the smartphone ships with a 32MP front camera with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). The phone can record video in 1080p at 30fps using the front camera.
At the back, the smartphone packs in a dual-camera setup where one is a 12MP primary sensor with 1.25um pixel size and a 5pc lens with an aperture of f/2.2. The camera comes with PDAF, and 33 AI scene detection feature as well as EIS support. The rear camera can record videos in 1080p at 60fps. The secondary camera at the back is a 2MP depth sensor. There is a single tone LED flash at the back as well. For the front, the camera uses the screen as a flash.
In our first impressions of the device, we noted, “The Redmi Y3 certainly comes across as a big upgrade over its predecessor, especially in the selfie department. The performance too seems like it may be an upgrade over the Redmi Y2, but it won’t be able to match up to other mid-rangers in the same price range. Essentially, if you have Rs 9,999 to spend, you can either go for the performance route with the Redmi Note 7 or the selfie-centric way with the Redmi Y3. However, we should mention that the performance of both the phones is yet to be tested by us, so we'll reserve any definitive judgement on that. What’s notable is that the Redmi Y3 becomes the cheapest smartphone with a 32MP front camera in the market presently. All the others like the Samsung Galaxy A70 and the Vivo V15 and the Vivo V15 Pro are priced almost double that of the Redmi Y3. The megapixel wars have now reached the front camera and combined with Xiaomi’s price-game, it certainly looks impressive.”

OnePlus 7 Pro camera confirmed to have 3x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom: Report
OnePlus will launch the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro on May, but Wired got access to the “near final” pre-production model of the Pro variant, and tested out the camera of the phone. The Chinese company has already announced that the OnePlus 7 pro will have a triple camera setup on the back, and this was confirmed in an image that was leaked over the weekend. Wired says that it tested the camera of the phone and has revealed that the phone has a 3x optical zoom and a 10x digital zoom.
Apart from that, the publication also talked to one of the key company executives. Before we proceed to tell you about what the tech news platform said of the OnePlus 7 Pro camera, let’s just look at the details of the camera configuration. There is the 48MP primary camera, which is paired with an 8MP sensor with a telephoto lens having an aperture of f/2.4, and a 16MP sensor with f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens.
As mentioned, the phone has a 3x optical zoom. Wired says that OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera “doesn't beat the Huawei P30 Pro’s 5x zoom, of course.” the publication talks about “marginally” less detail, more noise and a difference in colours in the zoomed images. It also says that the video recorded with the 3x zoom have some degree of stabilization. What’s interesting is that OnePlus knows that it cannot beat the like of Huawei P30 Pro, and their “main goal is to give users a simple user interface.”
“On our previous phones, we wanted to maintain a nice phone body that wasn’t too thick, and to make sure the lens didn’t stick out too much. In this case, the users’ input on forums helped me to get these features onto the phone. But we tried to find the balance over the entire phone experience. I think we have a shot at competing with the first tier phones. I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective,” Wired quoted OnePlus Imaging Director Simon Liu, as saying.
The news comes a day after OnePlus CEO Pete Lau revealed that the OnePlus 7 Pro has received an A+ display rating in DisplayMate's Lab Tests, which was confirmed by DisplayMate in a tweet. Pete Lau tweeted the information saying, “Can't wait for you to experience our A+ rated display (there is no A++ so we hit the ceiling) by the renowned independent research and test lab - DisplayMate.” OnePlus also claimed that the phone scored “exceptionally well” across parameters like colour accuracy, brightness, contrast accuracy, pixel density, among others.

Facebook F8 Conference: What to expect, dates and how to watch
Every year, Facebook hosts a conference where the developer community that builds products and services around the website are invited. Called Facebook F8, the two-day conference will be held in San Jose, California from April 30. The annual conference will provide the attendees networking opportunities, deep-dive sessions and product demos that showcase the latest developments in the space of Artificial Intelligence (AI), AR/VR, and new tools that help build new products for consumers. Those who are interested can catch the action live from 10pm (IST) on April 30 here.
The conference comes on the heels of Facebook’s announcement of its first quarter (2019) earnings. The Menlo Park-based company’s first-quarter profit dropped to $2.43 billion from $4.99 billion on year-over-year basis. Facebook also said that it has kept aside a sum of $3 billion in connection with the FTC inquiry. The firm, however, registered an 8 percent increase each in both Daily Active Users (1.56 billion on average) and Monthly Active Users (2.38 billion). “We had a good quarter and our business and community continue to grow. We are focused on building out our privacy-focused vision for the future of social networking, and working collaboratively to address important issues around the internet,” Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO, said.
Taking a cue from this, here is a list of announcements that we may witness at the conference.
PrivacyFacebook was mired in several controversies last year, and the company may be looking to address those issues. In fact, Zuckerberg has already apprised people about his vision of a privacy-focused social networking in a 3200-word letter. So this year at F8, we may see announcements which would help the platform to operate keeping in mind the users’ privacy. There is a possibility that the company may announce AI-powered enforcements that could help mitigate the privacy problems that the company is facing.
WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger updateFacebook is one of a few companies that directly connects with the masses. For this, it has apps like WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Facebook has already announced that it will introduce new features and updates to Facebook’s family of apps, “that will help build community and bring the world closer together.” These apps have grown exponentially under one umbrella company, and out of the three, WhatsApp has been witnessing tweaks and updates the most.
We could see announcements regarding the support of making voice as well as video calls from WhatsApp Web/Desktop. There have been a lot of stories surrounding the Dark Mode, and given the Silicon Valley’s inclination of incorporating the native Dark Mode, it is expected that the company may announce the updates on the roll out of this feature. Further, WhatsApp may also get a support for Animated Stickers and the feature might be presented at the conference.
VR and ARLast year, Facebook launched the Oculus Go, its mobile VR headset, at F8 Conference, and this year may also see some important announcements. Oculus has already launched the Oculus Quest, and most recently, it unveiled the Oculus Rift S. Now both the device are priced the same at $399, however, there is not particular launch date for both of these devices. We may see Facebook announcing the exact launch date of both of these products.
Just like other tech giants, Facebook has also been using AR in its products, Instagram and Messenger. Facebook has provided a set of tools called Spark AR Studio to developers so that they can develop camera-based effects, hence, we may see some new announcements in this space as well. Reportedly, Facebook has 10 AR-related sessions scheduled during the two-day event.

Realmes upcoming phone teased in new video, features bezel-less display, pop-up camera
The CEO of Realme mobile phones, Madhav Sheth confirmed that the company is expanding its presence in Europe via online retailers. The company will also launch its phones in China as it has set up a Chinese website and an official account on Weibo. The smartphone manufacturer is teasing the launch of a new smartphone in the county with a promo video, which was recently posted on its Weibo page. While most of the video is about young people having fun, the most interesting bit is a new Realme phone, which is showcased multiple times in the teaser.
Realme’s teaser video suggests that the company is working on a new smartphone that features a completely bezel-less display design. The phone seen in the video sports a notch-less display and comes equipped with a centrally-placed pop-up mechanism for the front camera. While the company has not officially confirmed which new phone this is, the company’s CEO Madhav Sheth quoted a report on Twitter about a leaked Realme handset. He asked his followers’ opinions on what they thought about the report, which was about a Realme handset that was spotted on TENAA featuring the model number RMX1901.
The TENAA listing also showcased some images of the new phone, which is in line with the phone that is shown off in the teaser video. As per the TENAA listing, the smartphone features a 6.5-inch display OLED display with a Full HD+ resolution. Since no notch was spotted on the device’s display, it is expected to employ a pop-up front camera. Additionally, the lack of a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor suggests that the device might come equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The new Realme phone is expected to be a flagship product with the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC. However, the company might limit the number of cameras on its back to two and a equip a single sensor on the front, which is housed within the pop-up camera. The handset could be backed by a 3680 mAh battery that supports VOOC fast charging and is expected to launch running on ColorOS 6 on top of Android 9 Pie.
