China restricts online gaming for under-18 to 3 hours per week to limit addiction

China has restricted young gamers from playing video games, including online games to three hours per week, a move that it thinks will reduce gaming addiction. As per a report by Statista, the worldwide PC gaming market is a 37 billion US dollar industry while the mobile gaming market alone generated over 77 billion USD in 2020. So it's not wrong to say that interest in gaming is at an all-time high after being associated with a lot of negativity and stigma in the past few years. However, the latest rules by the Chinese government come as a setback to gamers as well as the gaming industry.

The new gaming rules

The new rule limits minors to play games only for one hour from 8 PM to 9 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. This is even more stringent than the previous rules established in 2019 that allowed minors to play games for 1.5 hours on weekdays and three hours on weekends and public holidays.

In addition, those under the age of 18 were also required to use their real names and National Identification Number while logging in to play any game so that they could be identified and regulated based on the existing rules.

All game titles in China will also be connected to an “anti-addiction” system that is being set up by the NPPA (National Press and Publication Administration), as per a Reuters report. Furthermore, the government will also increase its scrutiny to ensure that the new rules are being enforced by gaming companies.

Gaming in China

As per the state media, over 62.5% of minors (under-18) play online games in China while 13.2% play mobile games for over two hours on weekdays.

"Teenagers are the future of our motherland. Protecting the physical and mental health of minors is related to the people's vital interests, and relates to the cultivation of the younger generation in the era of national rejuvenation,” an unnamed NPPA spokesperson told Xinhua state news agency.

In 2020 alone, the gaming revenues from China rose by more than 20% to around 43 billion USD where Tencent and NetEase remain the largest online gaming companies. Seeing so much interest in online gaming, the Beijing government even announced in 2019 that it plans to become the global capital of online games by 2035.

Fast forward to the Two Sessions, the government annual parliamentary hearings held earlier in March, President Xi Jinping listed game addiction as a cause for the deteriorating psychological health of young teens in China. This suggested that the government is getting ready to take some action and could try to regulate gaming.

While gaming studios like Tencent have already enforced some limits on players of some popular games like Honour of Kings, it seems to have done little to calm the nerves of the state. It remains to be seen how this new rule affects the larger gaming community in China and whether this latest crackdown will reverse years of growth for the worldwide gaming industry.

Windows 11 tips and tricks: 11 cool features you should know about

Windows 11 brings several small changes and refinements that add up to make a substantial difference. Microsoft has tried to add uniformity across different aspects of the interface, focused more on user security and privacy, has tried to make Windows 11 more appealing to Android users, and also tried to make it more suitable for touch-enabled devices - even if all these improvements come at the expense of few users switching over from old Windows 10.

All Windows 10 users with PCs that support minimum requirements will get Windows 11 as a free upgrade. Even users who aren't very tech-savvy can experience the new software by joining the Beta channel in the Windows Insider program.

Interesting Windows 11 Features that you should know about

If you just switched to the new Windows version, here are some of the most interesting Windows 11 features that you should know about:

1. Snapping Windows on Windows 11

Snapping Windows left and light is extremely convenient but only if you are well accustomed to the keyboard shortcuts (Windows Key + Arrows). Windows 11 makes this a lot more convenient, especially for people who do so once in a while.

You can simply hover your cursor over the minimize-maximize or resize button and you will see some mini snapping templates that you can choose. This is a lot more convenient and precise than dragging Windows to corners or using keyboard shortcuts.

Most importantly, once you have snapped your windows you won’t lose the setting even if you expand one of the windows independently. You can just however over the icon in the taskbar and you will see a group option to get back to the Snap settings.

2. Try Widgets

Widgets on Windows 11 are a nice way of keep tabs on stuff you frequently monitor. Apart from the news feed, this is where you can conveniently check or keep an eye on stock prices, weather, calendar, your 'To do' list and more.

The list of widgets you can add is pretty limited and these are highly dependent on Microfost services. Over time we expect more third-party options to be added. Users can also resize and customize available widgets.

3. Try dictation with auto punctuation on Windows 11

Windows dictation tool can now understand punctuation and it really works like a charm. All you need to do is press the Windows Key plus H and the dictation tool will be activated. You can just dictate whatever you need to type in Note pad, Word, Google Docs, or any other text window.

4. Enable Shake to Minimise

This is a handy feature from Windows 10 that is disabled by default on Windows 11. You can enable it from Settings >> System >> Multitasking. Once enabled, you can simply left-click on the title bar of a window and shake it to minimize all other open windows. You can also re-shake the title bar to restore all windows to their previous state.

5. How to copy files using right-click on Windows 11?

Contex menus have been modified through Windows 11. Many users who aren’t tech-savvy and use right-click to copy may end up hitting “copy path” instead.

The options to copy, cut, rename or delete are now present as icons in a bar as shown in the image above. You can also see the old Windows 10 menu options by selecting the “Show more Options” at the end.

6. Check peak brightness, HDR support, and refresh rate for the display

Windows 11 highlights HDR a lot more prominently than Windows 10. Under System >> Display >> Advanced Settings, Windows will tell you details like colour space your display is targeting, Peak brightness for HDR, HDR certification if any, and the option to switch between refresh rates.

If your laptop does not have HDR compliant display, you will not see stats like peak brightness as is shown in the image above. Windows 11 also has an "Auto HDR" feature in the working that can pass on HDR metadata for SDR games.

7. Windows Command Terminal

The Windows Command Terminal adds a lot of new features for people who use command-line tools and shells like Command Prompt, Subsystem for Linux (WSL), PowerShell, and more. You can now open multiple tabs of command-line options, rename different windows and customize their appearance.

Windows Command Terminal uses GPU to render text and supports custom commands. To access Windows Terminal, you can search for the app in the search box or just right-click within a folder or on the desktop and select "Show more options" in the context menu.

8. Customize multiple Desktops on Windows 11

Using multiple Desktops on Windows 11 is now simpler. Users can assign different names to multiple desktops and also customize them with different backgrounds. If you always have a million apps open on your PC, then multiple desktops could help with better organization.

9. Compact View

By default, Windows 11 adds some extra spacing between different files in a folder, probably for a better touch experience. If you prefer the old Windows 10 spacing, you can switch to "Compact View". You will find the option in the top bar listed under the "View" menu.

10. Add Revamped Touch Keyboard to Taskbar

Windows 11 has a revamped touch keyboard that takes inspiration from smartphone keyboards. It now supports voice inputs, Swipe-typing, emojis and GIFs. Users can also use the space bar as a cursor, resize the keyboard, and customize it with different themes. This should make the touch keyboard a lot more useful for convertible laptops.

To add Touch Keyboard icon to taskbar, just go to Settings>> System>> Personalization >> Taskbar. The toggle to add touch keyboard will be listed under the "Taskbar corner" section.

11. Detailed Sound Controls

Windows 11 has more elaborate Sound controls with several useful options and a volume mixer that will let users change the volume for individual apps. Users can check detailed properties of the input and output devices including driver information and the option to update drivers. If you are always unsure about audio properties on your PC, do check out the new Sound controls.

Apart from the features that we have mentioned above, many more including support for Android Apps will be available in the near future. We will keep adding more features as soon as they surface or any new ones that we run into.

Microsoft explains why Windows 11 wont support most Intel 7th gen and AMD Zen CPUs

Microsoft Windows 11 will officially support only PCs from the last three to four years. After receiving a lot of flak for stricter-than-usual requirements for Windows 11, Microsoft has reevaluated if Intel’s 7th generation and AMD Zen processors can be added to the list of supported CPUs, and it has mostly stood by its initial restrictions.

Microsoft has now added support for Intel Core X-series, Xeon W-series, and select Intel Core 7820HQ, but most of the 7th gen Intel CPUs and AMD Zen processors didn’t make the cut.

Minimum requirements to run Windows 11 now include: CPUs:  Intel Core X-series, Xeon W-series, and select Intel Core 7820HQ, Eighth-gen or newer Intel Processors, Zen 2 or newer AMD processors, and Snapdragon 850 or newer Qualcomm SoCs. GPUs: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver RAM and Storage: 4GB RAM and 64GB storage  TPM 2.0 support (most supported CPUs have it) UEFI, Secure Boot capability  High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per colour channel

The PC Health Check app has been updated to support the latest requirements.

PCs with older CPUs are not very stable with Windows 11

Until now, most of the stringent requirements for Windows 11 including TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and virtualization support had more to do with security than actual performance. However, it looks like including older PCs could also lead to some major stability issues

In a new blog post, Microsoft explains its system requirements in a bit more detail and made a compelling case based on stats from the insider program. Devices that didn’t meet the minimum requirements had 52% more kernel mode crashes, whereas the supported devices had a 99.8% crash-free experience.

The rationale to leave these PCs behind makes sense since Windows automatic updates would then be a huge inconvenience for average consumers who just want a stable PC experience.

Also Check: Microsoft Windows 11 Public Beta is now available to install

Some unsupported PCs can still get Windows 11 using ISO

PCs with unsupported CPUs but with minimum hardware support - 64-bit 1GHz processor with two or more cores, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage - will still be able to get Windows 11 on their own risk. Users will have to go through the trouble of manually downloading the software using an ISO file. How and when you will be able to do that is still not known.

Apple will replace iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro with faulty earpiece speakers for free

Apple is providing free earpiece replacement to iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro owners since a small percentage of these devices have shipped with faulty ones. Apple says that some devices manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021 may experience ‘no sound issues’ on calls due to speaker components that fail.

The program covers eligible phones for 2 years since the day of purchase and Apple may restrict or limit repair to the original country or region of purchase. Additionally, Apple will not provide a free replacement to iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models that have a cracked screen.

“If your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro has any damage which impairs the ability to complete the repair, such as a cracked screen, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the service. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the additional repair,” says Apple in the service plan announcement.   That should come as a relief to iPhone 12/ 12 Pro owners since repairs for these devices are quite expensive. The offer is, however, not valid for iPhone 12 Mini or the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In India, Apple’s two-year protection plan costs INR 16,900 for the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini and Rs 26,900 for the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. This plan covers accidental damages and other repairs. Screen repairs for the respective models are even more expensive than the two-year plan.

If you are facing speaker issues on your iPhone 12 or 12 Pro, you can get in touch with Authorized Apple retail stores and place a service request. For more details, you can check the official repair service announcement.

OnePlus reportedly offering free battery replacements for OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5 and 6 series phones in India

In what will come as welcome news for many, OnePlus is reportedly offering a free battery replacement for the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6, and OnePlus 6T phones in India. This information comes courtesy of a Reddit post, however, official word on the matter is still awaited.

As per the Reddit post, a user got their OnePlus 5T battery replaced free of cost having paid only labour charges of Rs 473 for the process. It further explains that this is only for walk-in appointments at the store and not courier pickups which may incur extra charges. The post further claims that OnePlus is replacing batteries of these phones free of cost because the company has been stuck with a lot of unused spare batteries for these old phones that are now at the end of their life cycle and as such, there is very little demand for their batteries.

By making battery replacements for these phones free, OnePlus appears to be not only clearing stocks, and recouping some of the labour charges, it is also looking to earn some goodwill from its existing customers and get some new ones on board by showing that it cares for its OnePlus community.

Needless to say, this is a very good offer if you happen to own a OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6, or a OnePlus 6T phone in India. All these phones are at least a few years old, and if you have been using any of these phones as your daily drivers since then, the chances are the battery of the particular device is in a below-par stage at the moment. So, giving the phone a new lease of life by getting its battery replaced at a nominal charge does indeed sound like a very good deal.

Once again, all of this is based on the claims of the Reddit post that OnePlus has indeed started replacing batteries of these phones for free. A claim that is yet to be confirmed as OnePlus has released no official word on the matter. But that could soon change if this Reddit user's account is to be believed. As always, we'll be following this story closely for updates, so watch this space for the latest developments in the matter.
