iQOO 11 may debut in India as iQOO 10 hints IMEI database

iQOO, Vivo's subsidiary consumer electronics brand, will launch its 11 series in China before the year's end. The 11 series will include a vanilla variant iQOO 11, and a premium model iQOO 11 Pro. Meanwhile, another iQOO smartphone has been spotted on the IMEI database in India with an iQOO 10 and a model number labelled 12209, earlier rumoured to be the Indian version of the iQOO 11.

The upcoming iQOO 11 and iQOO 11 Pro smartphones were reported to sport V2243A and V2254A model numbers in China. At the same time, the iQOO 11 lineup was expected to be released in the Indian market with I2209 and I2212 model numbers. However, model number I2209 has appeared on the IMEI platform but with the alias iQOO 10, which strongly suggests that vanilla iQOO is getting a name upgrade to iQOO 10 for its India version.

iQOO 10 expected features (Indian version)

According to rumors, iQOO 10 will feature a 6.78-inch 144Hz AMOLED E6 FHD+ display. In addition, the phone could be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and come with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB internal memory. In addition, it would pack a 5000mAh battery with 120W charging support. On the camera front, iQOO 10 will likely settle with a triple rear camera system comprising a 50 MP primary camera, a 13MP ultrawide sensor, and a 12MP telephoto camera. It will sport a 16MP front selfie camera.

Apple has reportedly postponed new MacBook Pros to 2023: Heres what you need to know

Apple's upcoming M2-powered 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros might not launch till next march.

In contrast to earlier reports that claimed Apple might deliver the new devices before the end of the year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman now predicts a March launch, reports The Verge.

The release of the new MacBooks is expected to coincide with the release of the macOS Ventura 13.3 and iOS 16.3, which are likely to be in early February and March, respectively.

According to Gurman, the company's most recent earnings call is another proof that the improved line of MacBook Pros won't be released this year. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, claimed that the business is "set" with its product lineup for the holiday season, whereas, Luca Maestri, the chief financial officer, believes that Mac revenue would "decline substantially" in December.

When the tech giant introduced the MacBook Pros last October, the devices increased Mac revenue by $10.9 billion, but it doesn't appear like the company expects the same this year. According to rumours, the M2 Max chip will have 12 CPU cores and up to 38 GPU cores, an upgrade from the M1 Max's 10 CPU cores and up to 32 GPU cores, the report said.

This Caviar-designed iPhone 14 Pro costs around 11 cr: Know whats so special about it

Caviar, known for making lavish custom iPhones and accessories, has created an iPhone 14 Pro with an expensive Rolex Daytona watch on its back panel, which costs a whopping $133,670 (over Rs 1.1 crore).

There are only three such limited edition iPhones 14 pro models that carry a Golden Rolex Daytona watch on the back.

The watch is completely functional with 18K gold dashboard dials and switches are only for show.

Daytona is dedicated to racing and was designed for the professional drivers.

The first ambassador of the collection was motor racer Malcolm Campbell, the author of world records in ground speed.

Caviar said that this time, the target was an impressive iPhone 14 Pro with a Rolex watch embedded into the body.

"Golden Rolex Daytona is a work of art in itself. And now it gets combined with the latest Apple smartphone, which is perhaps the most relevant invention of humanity right now - a truly monumental work," the company said on its website.

The phone body is made in the style of racing cars of the 1930s, such as Campbell's Blue Bird, which set a world speed record on the Daytona track.]Decorative speedometers and switches made of gold create the image of the dashboard of the supercar, which marked the beginning of the great Rolex Daytona watch collection.

Rolex Daytona on the iPhone 14 Pro back comes with perpetual mechanism, mechanical chronograph, automatic winding and a winding crown.

Decorative dials on the instrument panel consist of speedometer, oil and fuel indicators and the watch is painted with jewelry enamel.

"The switches are functional, but only for decorative purposes," said Caviar.

The multi-level body of the case is made of titanium coated with black PVD coating used by Rolex to create black dials, cases, and bracelets.

Musks Twitter to go beyond 280 character limit and also bring longer videos: Heres what we know

Elon Musk on Sunday said that Twitter can soon expand or even get rid of the 280-character limit on the platform.

He also confirmed that the company under him will look into increasing the length of videos so that users can post longer videos.

Responding to a user who asked if we can get rid of character limits, or at least greatly expand it, Musk said: "Absolutely".

Another user asked him about posting longer videos on Twitter, to which he said: "100 per cent".

Musk, who has acquired Twitter for $44 billion after a bitter battle, said in April this year that the micro-blogging platform needs long-form tweets which is "way overdue".

Twitter currently allows people to post in 280 characters.

Reacting to a follower's tweet thread, Musk said: "My most immediate takeaway from this novella of a thread is that Twitter is way overdue for long form tweets!"

Earlier, Musk demanded an Edit button, and the micro-blogging platform announced that it is working on such a feature that will allow users to correct errors in their tweets, albeit with some rules.

Twitter launched 280 characters in November 2017 to all users in supported languages, including English.

The company first announced the controversial plan to move beyond its traditional 140 characters in September 2017 with a small group of users.

Several Twitter users had argued that 280 characters would make Twitter less readable as the platform's defining characteristic is the brevity of posts.

However, Twitter's decision to double its character count from 140 to 280 characters did not dramatically change the length of Twitter posts.

According to the company, Twitter is still a place for briefer thoughts.

Only 1 per cent of tweets hit the 280-character limit, and only 12 per cent of tweets were longer than 140 characters, according to the data provided by the company a couple of years back. Only 5 per cent of tweets were longer than 190 characters.

Netflixs Profile Transfer feature starts to roll out in India: Heres how it works

Popular streaming platform Netflix, which recently announced the 'Profile Transfer' feature to prevent password sharing, is now available in India.

It is fully enabled and available to users.

The "much requested" feature allows users to transfer their personalised recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other preferences to a new account when they start their own membership, said the company.

The customers have started receiving emails to upgrade to the new feature.

"We will never transfer your payment information, and Children profiles cannot be transferred. All saved games and game progress connected to a profile will move to the new account," it added.

The streaming platform also mentioned that the users will always be in control of their account. They can turn off Profile Transfer on the app and web by signing in to their account.

Meanwhile, in a bid to introduce an ad-supported tier for its users, the company had announced that it will roll out the 'Basic With Ads' streaming plan on November 3 in several countries.

Also, Netflix recently announced that it is planning to crack down on password sharing beginning in 2023.

Google Workspace storage limit for Individual users increased from 15GB to 1TB

For over eight million monthly paying individual users, Google Workspace is increasing the free cloud storage from 15GB to 1TB. For reference, that is more than 60 times the storage Workspace Individual users were getting. They can get 1TB of cloud storage at the current Workspace Individual pricing (which will soon cost $10 a month). The increased storage space will help Google Workspace Individual users store, access and collaborate on more files than ever. Not just that, Google is expanding the service to more markets like Philippines, the Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Greece, and Argentina.

Individual Workspace users to enjoy increased cloud storage

Google Workspace

Google Workspace Individual users do not have to do anything to get 1TB of free cloud storage. They can keep using the service, and Google will automatically upgrade their cloud storage limit from 15GB to 1TB.

While 15GB is too less for some people, 1TB will allow users to store heavy multimedia files, documents such as PDFs, and other work-related stuff on their Google account. All the data stored in Google's cloud storage is accessible from anywhere.

In the official blog post, Google says, "as you grow your business, it's only natural that you'll have more docs, data, and digital assets to manage and store, and Google Drive allows you to do so securely from any device." Users should not confuse Google Workspace subscription with Google One.

Don’t confuse Google Workspace with Google One

Workspace Individual

Workspace is a suite of synchronised Google apps for business owners, Google One is a subscription-based cloud storage plan. Although Google does provide all users with 15GB of free cloud storage, and they can upgrade by purchasing a Google One subscription, only some users operate via Google Workspace.

Google is also releasing mail merge tags like @firstname to multi-send emails so that each recipient receives a unique email that feels individually crafted just for them. "We're also launching Google Workspace Individual in a number of new countries and regions: the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Greece and Argentina."

Google Pixel 7a could come with a flagship camera system and support wireless charging: Report

Earlier this month, Google released two flagship smartphones, the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. The devices come with Google's latest Tensor G2 chipset, have a versatile camera system and provide a mostly stock Android experience to users. However, those following the Pixel series know that Google also releases a toned-down version of its flagship series as an A-series smartphone. This year, that phone could be called Pixel 7a.

The purported Pixel 7a is codenamed “Lynx”

Pixel 7

Pixel 7 series image used for representational purpose.

In the past, we have seen the Pixel 4a, Pixel 5a and earlier this year, Pixel 6a, the first Google smartphone to come out in India after a long time. Now, 9To5Google has learnt about a Google device with the codename "Lynx", and it could be the unreleased Pixel 7a.

As per the publication, a public conversation in Android code reveals that Pixel 7a is "in the works." Usually, the A-series smartphones follow Google's flagship next year, and Pixel 7a appears to be no different, implying that Google will release the smartphone in 2023. However, all the information leaked about the smartphone "points to something far more premium" than what enthusiasts or users would typically expect from a Pixel A-series device.

Pixel 7a leaked details

Pixel 7

Pixel 7 image used for representational purpose.

For instance, known leaker Digital Chat Station claimed earlier this year that Google is manufacturing a smartphone in China with the Tensor G2 chipset, also used in the Pixel 7 series, with a ceramic body. Since ceramic is considered a premium material, using it on an A-series smartphone could benefit the company.

The main highlight of the Pixel 7a could be its camera system. On the rear panel, the device could come with a triple camera system, a first for Pixel A-series. Lynx might feature the Samsung GN1 50MP as its primary sensor, a Sony IMX787 64MP for telephoto and a Sony IMX712 13MP sensor for clicking ultrawide shots. At first glance, these look like the camera specifications of a Pro Pixel device, as telephoto lenses haven't been featured on an A-series device yet.

Apart from this, the Pixel 7a also appears to support wireless charging, another feature that Google saves for its premium smartphones. As spotted by Kuba Wojciechowski, an Android researcher, the Pixel 7a "is set to include the P9222 chip" for wireless charging. However, the Pixel 7a's wireless charging capabilities seem limited to 5W and are best suited for charging the Pixel Buds with the smartphone.

While that is the level of information available about the unreleased Lynx smartphone by Google, none of the details mentioned here is confirmed. Hence, readers should take them with a pinch of salt.

Spotify says Apple is destroying its audiobook store by choking competition

San Francisco, Oct 26 (IANS) Leading music streaming platform Spotify has said that Apple is ruining its audiobook store by "choking competition".

Apple's limitations are harmful to both creators and users, as it continues to prevent Spotify and other applications from offering a seamless user experience, the company said in a blog post.

According to the platform, Apple's restrictions are "far too complicated and confusing," and they change "arbitrarily, making them impossible to interpret."

The market for audiobooks has huge potential for growth and more authors could be discovered by new listeners, but the buying flow the company has been forced into is unnecessarily restricting that possibility.

"Apple continues to dictate what online innovation looks like, doing serious harm to the internet economy, choking competition and the imagination of app developers. Apple has shown time and again that it will not self-regulate and has no real incentive to change," said Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify.

"With our audiobooks launch, Apple has once again proven just how brazen it is willing to be with its App Store rules, constantly shifting the goalposts to disadvantage their competitors," he added.

Meanwhile, recently, the company announced that it had acquired Dublin-based Kinzen, a global leader in protecting online communities from harmful content.

Apple to reportedly bring iOS 16 features to iPadOS soon

Apple might roll out the iOS 16 features to the iPad soon along with the Stage Manager.

The tech giant has officially unveiled iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1, which indicates that iOS 16 features like iMessage editing and undo send in Mail will eventually be added to the iPad, reports The Verge.

Additionally, the Stage Manager multitasking function, however, which was unpopular and unreliable during the iPadOS betas, is now officially released.

Although the company postponed the release of iPadOS 16 from its September date, Stage Manager might still have some issues when it will made available to the general public in version 16.1.

Stage Manager would not have external display support upon launch despite the delay, the report said.

Recently, the company had announced to roll out iOS 16.1 update with new features, including 'Live Activities', 'Clean Energy Charging' and more.

'Live' feature gave updates about an ongoing sports game and tracks the progress of the ride.

The update supported 'Matter', a new smart home connectivity standard that enabled compatible accessories to work together seamlessly, across platforms.

'Clean Energy Charging' focused on decreasing the carbon footprint of the iPhone by planning charging times for when the grid was using cleaner energy sources.

Apple to show more ads in the App Store from October 25, informs developers through email

Apple is increasing the total ad spots in its App Store from two to four. With the change, the iPhone maker expects to triple its advertising revenue to at least $10 billion every year in the near future. So far, the company has been showing ads in the search results and the Suggested tab. Now, Apple will put ads in the Today tab and the "You Might Also Like" section, which will be displayed at the bottom of the app listings. The ads will be live starting October 25, 2022, i.e., Tuesday, in all the countries worldwide except for China.

Apple’s new ad placements to go live from October 25, 2022

Apple just sent all developers an email that "Today tab and product page campaigns start October 25." It's another means of increasing the effective app tax rate, forcing developers to buy ads on their own app pages in order to avoid that others steer customers away from there.

— Florian Mueller (@FOSSpatents) October 21, 2022

The company announced its intention to expand the ad placements in July 2022. Users can distinguish between an ad and an organic listing with the help of the Ad icon shown towards the bottom left corner of the tile. Here is what Apple has to say about the Today tab used to showcase recommendations - "With a Today tab ad, your (advertiser's) app can appear prominently on the front page of the App Store - making it some of the first content users see when they begin their App Store visit."

The company also says that the prominence of this ad placement makes it a good place for developers to drive awareness of their app, especially for new content launches, events, and seasonal promotions. As far as the app product pages are concerned, Apple will also showcase advertisements there. The company says that "while browsing ads let you promote your app to interested users when they're browsing pages across the App Store.

Why do the new ad placement spots concern developers?

App Store

Ads will appear at the top of the ‘You Might Also Like’ list to users actively researching apps and deciding whether they wish to download an app or not. Now, this could be a good move for the company, but developers are raising concerns about the rising effective tax rate. Developers who have an app that is free or low-priced might have to rethink the cost of their app, as purchasing ad slots might be an expensive deal for them.

Since Apple will run the ads in the "You Might Also Like" section, developers might have to buy the ad slots on their app pages which would otherwise advertise someone else's app, increasing the competition. Legal expert Florian Mueller highlights the same via his tweet, saying that the new ad placement might force developers to buy ads on their app pages "to avoid that others steer customers away from there."

Google Play Store has removed popular apps with 20 million downloads: Heres why

Google Play has removed apps with more than 20 million downloads because they were using excessive mobile data and draining batteries, says a report.

According to a report by McAfee, it identified new Clicker malware that sneaked into Google Play. In total, 16 applications that were previously on Google Play have been confirmed to have the malicious payload with an assumed 20 million installations.

"Once the application is opened, it downloads its remote configuration by executing an HTTP request. After the configuration is downloaded, it registers the FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging) listener to receive push messages," McAfee wrote in a blogpost.

"At first glance, it seems like well-made Android software. However, it is hiding ad fraud features behind, armed with remote configuration and FCM techniques," it added.

The security researchers notified Google that all the identified apps are no longer available on Google Play. Users are also protected by Google Play Protect, which blocks these apps on Android.

The malicious code was found on useful utility applications like Flashlight (Torch), QR readers, Camera, Unit converters, and Task managers.

The FCM message has various types of information and that includes which function to call and its parameters.

WhatsApp Avatars reportedly releases to beta testers: How to use it

Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp seems to be on a never-ending spree of adding new features. Most recently, the platform rolled out quick emoji reactions for responding to statuses quickly. Now, the app seems to be working on another feature that adds a personal touch to communications that take place on it. The feature is called Avatars and is already available on other social media platforms by Meta.

WhatsApp Avatars: What is it and how to use it

WhatsApp is releasing the ability to set up an avatar to some lucky beta testers on WhatsApp beta for Android! An avatar is the best way to express yourself on WhatsApp: let's configure an avatar so you can share personalized stickers with your friends.https://t.co/rISRcluygb pic.twitter.com/E5cBNqKEtF

— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) October 21, 2022

As per a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is rolling out the ability to set up Facebook-like customisable Avatars. The report says avatars are a new way to “personalise your identity by setting up a digital expression within WhatsApp Settings.” However, the feature is available to some beta testers at the moment on WhatsApp beta for Android, v2.22.23.9. Since the feature is similar to that on Facebook and Instagram, users should be asked to create their digital Avatar first.

Once users set up their Avatar, the app also creates a personalised sticker pack. As the feature rolls out to everyone, WhatsApp users can also set up a digital avatar as their profile image. To check whether the feature is available, users may head to the Settings section of the app and see whether a new option called Avatar is available or not. It is important to remind users that the feature is only available for some users on the beta version of the app for Android. It is not available to beta testers on WhatsApp for iOS yet.

Instagram and Facebook already allow users to set up their Avatars

WhatsApp Avatars

Avatars seem to be the next big thing after emojis and GIFs, primarily because users can customise their avatars and make them look exactly like them. Hence, avatars add a personal touch to the conversation and can be used in multiple scenarios. For instance, Instagram allows users to respond to Stories using avatars. Similarly, when the feature comes out to WhatsApp, they should also be able to reply to other’s statuses using an avatar.

How to download and send Diwali 2022 WhatsApp stickers: Step-by-step guide

The Indian festival of lights, Diwali, is here, and people around the country are excited to celebrate it with their near and dear ones. However, even at this time, some are far from their home or cannot see their friends on occasion. For such people, social media and instant messaging platforms are a few ways to express their wishes for one another. Among all the other platforms, WhatsApp seems to be a user-favourite as people can share stickers and GIFs to wish each other. Here is how you can get Diwali stickers for WhatsApp and send them to your loved ones.

How to download Diwali 2022 stickers for WhatsApp?

Diwali stickers

WhatsApp has added a couple of new Diwali-themed stickers. Users can access them within the app without downloading or opening any third-party apps.

All one needs to do is open WhatsApp, open the chat where the Diwali stickers are to be sent, tap on the search icon and type "Diwali."  If there's a need, tap on the Get More Stickers prompt on the screen and find the Happy Diwali sticker pack by Sumouli Dutta (to preview, tap on the sticker app).  Now, press the download button beside the sticker pack, and that's it. The sticker pack will be visible in the WhatsApp chat in the Stickers section.  Most of the stickers in this pack are animated. Since sticker packs are not that large, users should be able to download them quickly, even on mobile data.

While that is how one can download the Diwali 2022 WhatsApp Sticker pack, what if someone needs to forward a sticker? The process is equally simple.

To forward a Diwali sticker received on WhatsApp, tap and hold on to the message, and select Forward from the options that appear.  Now, select the contacts to whom the sticker needs to go and tap on Forward. Doing this will send the Diwali sticker to the selected contact.  Depending upon whether one is using WhatsApp for Android or WhatsApp for iOS, the steps might differ a tad, but moreover, they remain the same.  Send Diwali stickers via Gboard

Diwali stickers

While WhatsApp does provide a couple of Diwali 2022 stickers, there is a way to get even more stickers to share with your family members and friends. Those who use Gboard on their smartphone can access a wide array of Diwali 2022 stickers by tapping the emoji icon on the keyboard, selecting Stickers and typing "Diwali" in the search box. Google keyboard has an extensive library of emojis, stickers and GIFs, including those themed after the Indian festival of lights.

Adobe teases AI-based Clever Composites feature at Max Sneaks 2022 event: How it works

Adobe showcased Project Clever Composite as a part of Sneaks (experimental features), allowing users to combine two images. The feature uses AI to recognise two images and then combine them, resulting in a composite image. Now, users would argue that it was already possible to make a composite image using the selection and trim tools; why is Adobe making such a big deal? Well, the answer is both interesting and dull.

What is the new Project Clever Composite feature and how does it work?

Adobe clever composites

Usually, when users want to make a composite image using two different images, they cut either of them and place it on the other. However, that is not all. Users also have to adjust the scaling and lighting and match the colour of both scenes for the image to look natural. While putting it into words, it may look like an easy task, but the process could take several minutes to complete. This is where the new Project Clever Composites comes in as it does all the work mentioned above, including cutting, pasting, and adjusting other values.

Clever Composites is an AI-driver feature that can automatically recognise different objects in an image and cut them out. Users must press the Auto Compose button, and the feature creates a composite image. It can also generate shadows based on the background’s lighting for the object in focus. Users also get options to remove the added shadows or reverse the scaling. Adobe is also working on other experimental features such as Project Blink, which enables searching in videos, and Project All Of Me, which un-crops images using AI.

Adobe clever composites

Such feature already exists on other platforms

Now for the dull part, some tools already allow users to separate backgrounds from an image and cut it over another. For instance, Canva is a tool that allows users to create composite images with clicks. Let’s suppose that a user needs to create an image of himself in front of the Himalayas. All he has to do is upload his image, use the Background Remover tool on Canva to separate the image from its background, cut it, and paste it onto an image of the Himalayas. Then the user can also adjust the colour and lighting of both images to make them look natural. Although Canva does not provide the comprehensive features of Adobe, it can create a basic composite image in seconds.

Google Pixel 7 series finally gets Clear Calling feature: Heres how it works

Tech giant Google has introduced a new feature called "Clear Calling" in its latest beta update for Pixel 7 series users to improve call clarity.

The call quality enhancer is available for those who download the Android 13 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release) beta 3 software update.

According to the Android Authority, during Google's Pixel launch event earlier this month, the company also unveiled a few new software features coming to the handsets.

As part of those features, Clear Calling was developed, which "automatically filters out background noise and enhances the voice on the other end of the line with machine learning, making it easier to hear the person on the other end of the line, even when they are walking on a windy street or dining in a noisy restaurant," said Google in a blogpost.

Users can find this feature in their sound settings if they install the Android 13 QPR1 beta. Simply scroll down to settings, tap on sound & vibration, and then find Clear Calling. Users can toggle Clear Calling on or off once they enter the page.

Users will need to sign up for Google's beta program before they can get started. There may be bugs and errors in this update due to it being an unstable version, the report added.

LG launches new Smart Monitor with 4K display and AirPlay 2: Check specifications here

The South Korean tech giant LG has released a new smart monitor with a 4K screen resolution, AirPlay 2 and runs on WebOS. The smart monitor is a successor of the LG StanbyMe (yes, that was its name) released in February this year, which only offered 1080p resolution. However, the model had availability issues, and in spite of coming in a battery-powered variant, StanbyMe did not do well. Nevertheless, the new LG Smart Monitor with model number 32SQ780S seems promising.

LG's new Smart Monitor comes with a 4K display

First, the LG Smart Monitor comes with a 32-inch 4K screen, which makes the monitor both handy and useful. It runs on WebOS, a Linux-based operating system for smart monitors and TVs developed by the company. The smart monitor also has a feature called AirPlay 2 that allows it to stream audio to multiple devices simultaneously. Users can use the smart monitor to relay audio to multiple Bluetooth speakers or headsets simultaneously.

In terms of connectivity, the LG Smart Monitor provides many options, including two HDMI ports, three USB-A ports, one USB-C port and an RJ45 port if someone wants to use a wired internet connection. Hence, users can connect the smart monitor to a plethora of devices. In addition, the monitor comes with a triple-jointed stand that can be adjusted at several angles. It has a built-in clamp that holds it in place and provides a sturdy point of movement for the monitor.

The LG Smart Monitor could be priced at around US $499

Overall, the LG smart monitor is a hybrid monitor/TV as it provides all the functionality of a smart TV unless one wants a large TV screen. The 32-inch LG Smart Monitor is listed on Amazon; however, it cannot be ordered now. The price of the smart monitor will reportedly be around US $499, and it will come in a white finish only. However, LG has not yet announced a smart monitor release date; hence, the pricing can change.

WhatsApp Call Links feature is rolling out for both voice and video calls: Heres how to use it

WhatsApp Call Links is available on Android and iOS. You will get the prompt to update WhatsApp if it isn’t on the latest version. And if it is updated, you will see the option to create a call link in the calls tab within the app. Here’s how to go about it.

How to create WhatsApp Call Links

WhatsApp Call Links

1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version from Google Play Store (for Android) or Apple App Store (for iOS). Once it’s updated, open WhatsApp.

2. Go to the Calls tab and you’ll have the ‘create call link’ option atop the recent calls list.

3. You will now get to choose between voice or video call and the link for the same will be visible up top. You also have the option to send the link via WhatsApp (directly within the app), copy and send the link to other apps as well as share it externally through the Android/iOS share sheet options.

4. Tapping on the aforementioned link takes you to the call screen. You will have to grant some permissions for this to work. Do that.

5. You could join the call and if you haven’t yet shared the link with others, the screen would show ‘Waiting for others’. You could add people from the saved contacts.

6. There’s an option to even send/share the call link whilst you are already on a call. You just have to press the back arrow on the top left corner. That minimizes the calls screen to a mini floating window.

Now, if everybody else leaves the call, the app tells you that if nobody else joins the call again in 60 minutes, then the call will be automatically disconnected. So you have a 1-hour window to share the call link and add others to a call in which you are already present.

WhatsApp Call Links

The WhatsApp calls you have been part of through a link show up on the recent calls list of WhatsApp with a link symbol.

At present, WhatsApp is reportedly allowing 32 participants in a video call. That may be small compared to what Zoom and Google Meet permit but WhatsApp is deeply integrated into the lives of millions in countries like India. So, if the app they use day in and day out anyways gets a feature like this, it's likely to enhance the user experience and be quickly adopted by many. Let’s see.

Microsoft looking to challenge Google and Apple with its own Xbox mobile store

San Francisco, Oct 20 (IANS) Microsoft is working on an Xbox mobile store to compete with Play Store and App Store.

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is currently looking into Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and they have discovered the company's plans to create an Xbox-branded mobile game store, reports The Verge.

To build a gaming store, the tech giant might use the successful mobile games Candy Crush Saga and Call of Duty: Mobile, which are produced by Activision and King, respectively.

According to a graph from the company, the mobile game industry represents a much larger portion of the overall gaming market at 51 per cent.

Given Apple's restrictions on third-party app stores on iOS, it is impossible to see Microsoft store on iPhones. But it's obvious that doesn't stop it from planning an Xbox mobile app store.

If the company wants to succeed in this plan, it will need to recruit third-party developers, the report said.

By agreeing to a set of guidelines, the firm appears to be setting the framework for developers to independently manage their own app stores on its Xbox mobile platform and provide their own payment methods for handling in-game transactions. That is a feature that Apple does not provide.

Netflix expands cloud gaming by opening new studio

San Francisco, Oct 19 (IANS) Netflix has expanded cloud gaming by opening a new studio in Southern California.

The company's vice president of gaming, Mike Verdu, revealed two pieces of information concerning the streaming giant's entry into games, reports TechCrunch.

According to Verdu, the platform is "seriously researching a cloud gaming offering".

"It is a value add. We are not asking you to subscribe as a console replacement. It is a completely different business model. The hope is over time that it just becomes this very natural way to play games wherever you are," he added.

The company is expanding its internal studio in California in order to speed up game development.

Former 'Overwatch' executive producer, Chacko Sonny, will work as the studio's head in California. The 'Overwatch' was a huge hit at Blizzard Entertainment, earning billions of dollars.

"He could have done anything, but he chose to come here," Verdu was quoted as saying.

"You do not get people like that coming to your organisation to build the next big thing in gaming unless there's a sense that we're really in it for the long haul and in it for the right reasons," he added.

Since announcing its entry into the gaming market, Netflix has 35 games available and 14 more in development in its own studios, the report said.

Verdu said that it currently has 55 games in progress. These games offer both licensed IP like 'Spongebob Squarepants' and experiences based on original IP like 'Stranger Things'. Additionally, the company is making its original games.

Meta has been ordered to sell Giphy by UK competition watchdog: Heres Metas response

In a significant decision, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK on Tuesday ordered Meta (formerly Facebook) to sell off online database and search engine Giphy it acquired for $315 million.

The competition watchdog found that Meta's takeover of Giphy could allow it to limit other social media platforms' access to GIFs, making those sites less attractive to users and less competitive.

It also found the deal has removed Giphy as a potential challenger in the UK display advertising market, preventing businesses from benefiting from innovation in this market.

Meta, disappointed by the decision, said it will accept the ruling.

"We are disappointed by the CMA's decision but accept today's ruling as the final word on the matter. We will work closely with the CMA on divesting Giphy," a company spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are grateful to the Giphy team during this uncertain time for their business, and wish them every success. We will continue to evaluate opportunities -- including through acquisition -- to bring innovation and choice to more people in the UK and around the world," the pokesperson added.

The CMA said Meta would be able to increase its already significant market power by denying or limiting other social media platforms' access to Giphy GIFs, thereby pushing people to Meta-owned sites, which already make up 73 per cent of user time spent on social media in the UK.

"It could require Giphy customers, such as TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat, to provide more data from UK users in order to access Giphy GIFs," the watchdog said.

The CMA found that GIFs continue to be an important driver of user engagement on social media platforms, with people making billions of searches globally each month for Giphy GIFs.

"This deal would significantly reduce competition in 2 markets. It has already resulted in the removal of a potential challenger in the UK display ad market, while also giving Meta the ability to further increase its substantial market power in social media," said Stuart McIntosh, Chair of the independent inquiry group.

Could this be Windows 12 or the Next Valley update from Microsoft

Microsoft is reportedly working on the successor to Windows 11 and it could be called Windows 12. Well, whatever it may be christened as, in the inner circles, it is believed to be known as the Next Valley update of Windows. Now even though the details around the next big Windows update are scanty, a recent spill by the company shows us fresh design elements which could very well be of Windows 12.

Here, have a look:

Is this Windows 12 aka Next Valley update?

An early UI exploration prototype for Windows Next Valley accidentally made a brief cameo during the Ignite keynote yesterday. Here's what I know about it: https://t.co/wbITbZ6215 pic.twitter.com/JEwL075ifR

— Zac Bowden (@zacbowden) October 13, 2022

We got the first look at this new Windows UI during Microsoft's presentation at Ignite 2022 event.

The first thing we noticed was the floating taskbar which looks similar to a macOS dock. It appears different from the traditional Windows taskbar which itself has come a long way since the early days of Windows.

Next, we see the system icons like time and date at the top right corner. Meanwhile, the weather icon is present at the top left corner.

Last but not least, the search bar is also present in the top center bar.

All of these things put the new Windows design far from Windows 11 and closer to the macOS design language.

As per Zac Bowden from Windows Central, this new UI is “representative of the design goals that Microsoft is hoping to achieve with the next version of Windows.”

Windows 11

Now the reason we assume this to be Windows 12 is because of Mr. Bowden’s claim that Microsoft has dropped Windows 11 23H2 update and the company will be returning to a 3-year development cycle.

This forthcoming Windows update could offer a Windows 7-like refinement for Windows 11. Or so is being expected. Let's see.

This is shown to be coupled with Adreno 740 GPU which is the onboard graphics believed to be part of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

S23

The listing also mentions 8GB of RAM on the model that was tested although there could be bigger variants with 12GB RAM too. The device is running on Android 13.

All of these and the S23 Geekbench scores are 1524 points on single-core and 4597 points on multi-cores.

In earlier leaks and rumors, the handset is also said to be featuring a 120Hz 6.1-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel, a 50MP+ 12MP (ultrawide)+ 10MP (telephoto) triple rear camera setup, and a 12MP selfie shooter.

Xiaomi Clouds Gallery Sync feature is being discontinued, but theres a alternative backup solution: Find what it is

Xiaomi will reportedly shut down its Gallery Sync option of Xiaomi Cloud, even though the official announcement about the same is pending. Currently, the company offers 5GB of free cloud storage for photos and videos, but users will now have to transfer those pictures to Google Photos.

Xiaomi is going to cancel sync photos and videos with Xiaomi Cloud and provide a convenient way to move them to Google Photos. Date to be determined yet, but it will start in 2022. pic.twitter.com/0cbpdgUstH

— Kacper Skrzypek (@kacskrz) October 12, 2022 Xiaomi discontinuing Gallery Sync on Xiaomi Cloud

The official announcement is pending, but the company released the draft announcement with placeholder dates ("XX XX 2022"), so it's unknown when Xiaomi will take down Gallery Sync. They will most likely do it this year. The other Xiaomi Cloud services will continue to work, like synchronizing and backing up the contacts, messages, and notes. Also, Gallery Sync may remain in operation in China, although this is again something that’s not confirmed.

Xiaomi is planning to allow the transfer of pictures to Google Photos, and the users who don't want to do that will have the option of downloading a copy to store the images and videos locally instead.

Gallery Sync also has a paid version that gives users more storage – Xiaomi will cancel subscriptions and issue a full refund.

Once Xiaomi makes the official announcement, the users will have to download or transfer their data as soon as possible - it seems like Xiaomi is planning to keep the data only throughout 2023 and will discard it later. Xiaomi stated, "We offer a way to download Gallery data stored in Xiaomi Cloud to your device. However, the data download will be available only until XX, XX, 2023, after which the device will no longer support this feature."
