HDMI 21a standard to launch at CES 2022, what you need to know about the new HDMI standard

The HDMI Forum, in charge of standardising HDMI standards, will show off HDMI 2.1a at CES 2022. The new standard brings Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM). According to The Verge, “SBTM is a new HDR feature that offloads some of the HDR tone mapping to the content source (like your computer or set-top box) alongside the tone mapping that your TV or monitor is doing.”

What is HDMI 2.1a and Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM)

HDMI 2.1a is the new standard announced by the HDMI Forum. The unique thing about this new HDMI standard is the Source-based Tone Mapping. Source-Based Tone Mapping or SBTM, in short, offloads the HDR tone mapping from the TV to the player or rather the source of the HDR content. For example, if you have a Blu-ray player or a laptop connected to the TV, and you are consuming HDR content, the tone mapping can be handled by the player instead of the TV.

This ability of the player to handle the tone mapping in place of the TV isn't something new and we have seen it in action with Dolby Vision content. You can check out the video below to get an understanding of the difference between TV led Dolby Vision and the player-led (or rather source-based) Dolby Vision.

From the video above it is clear that the TV led Dolby Vision had a more accurate output when it comes to colours, brightness and overall punchiness of the colours for the content being consumed. The same is the case for Dolby Vision IQ content. As per the video, the light sensor is on the TV to determine the amount of ambient light in the room, which is what Dolby Vision IQ relies on. Hence, Dolby Vision IQ content will appear inaccurate with the player-led Dolby Vision implementation as there is no way for the TV to tell the player the data is gathering via the light sensor to map the colours and brightness.

What remains to be seen is if these issues are addressed in some way with the HDMI 2.1a standard. According to the Verge, SBTM is “intended to help existing HDR setups work better by letting the content source better optimize the content it passes to the display or by removing the need to have the user manually calibrate their screens for HDR by having the source device configure content for the specific display. Other use cases could be for when there’s a mix of content types, like for streamers (who could have an HDR game playing alongside a window of black and white text), displaying each area of content.”

This will be interesting to see as calibrating a TV for HDR does involve tinkering with the backlighting, contrast, sharpness, tone mapping, colour temperature, etc. to get the best output. Some TVs like the Sony A80J (review) and even the LG G1 (review)/ C1 (review) offer some fantastic out of the box picture presets to get the best HDR experience.

Speaking of auto-calibration, Sony has issued an update that automatically calibrates the brightness setting of the PS5 (review) eliminating the need for the user to manually calibrate the peak brightness and black level when the console is connected to the TV for the first time. You can check out this setting in action in our video review of the Sony A80J below.

As for HDMI 2.1a, it is yet another addition to the confusion the HDMI Forum is making to the HDMI Standard. Going forward, a TV can call itself HDMI 2.1 enabled without offering features like 4K 120Hz, VRR, ALLM and more. This is because HDMI 2.0 and 1.4 are now a subset of the HDMI 2.1 standard. You can understand more about the current state of HDMI 2.1 here.

Heres how NASA will let you know if aliens exist

Humanity, as we know it, has always existed in a cosmic vacuum. The cold darkness of space has always been a mystery. We’ve had our hypotheses and conspiracies but for the most part, we’re still wondering, is anyone out there? The existential threat of universal loneliness looms large over the collective psyche of mankind. We’ve even managed to set foot on the Moon but as far as space travel is concerned, that is as far as we’ve gotten. This is why the launch of the James Webb telescope could be a boon for astrophysics and humanity, in general. Scientists hope that the telescope will give them a bit more insight into the mysteries of the known universe. Another side-effect of these deep space studies is that we could potentially discover actual alien life!

Alien Life NASA

NASA has outlined a plan to reveal information of alien life

That is a very real possibility. If you do believe that extraterrestrial life exists, the James Webb telescope could be our best bet of finding it. To this end, NASA has outlined a plan on how it plans to break the news to the public regarding the discovery of alien life. In the document, NASA states, “Our generation could realistically be the one to discover evidence of life beyond Earth. With this privileged potential comes responsibility. The magnitude of the question of whether we are alone in the Universe, and the public interest therein, opens the possibility that results may be taken to imply more than the observations support, or than the observers intend.

The researchers propose a progressive system where evidence would be presented on a scale of one through seven, starting with the detection of a biological signal and ending with definitive confirmation of the presence of alien biology.”

You can check out the image below of how NASA plans to go about it.

NASA alien life plan

NASA is right, our generation could be the first to find life outside our planet and what we do with that information is critical. Going even further, what would we do if we came in contact with a sentient, intelligent alien lifeform? Does NASA also have protocols for a situation that could potentially change the world? These are fascinating questions that do not have any answers, as of now. But as FBI agent Fox Mulder’s poster states “I Want to Believe”.

Alexa challenges 10-year-old to touch a live plug with a coin

The act of touching a coin to half-exposed live plugs has been making rounds on the internet for about a year. It is called “the penny challenge”. A 10-year old was unfortunately issued the challenge recently by Alexa.

The girl's mother, Kristin Livdahl shared a screenshot of the challenge on Twitter. Kristin Livdahl says that when her 10-year old asked Alexa for a challenge, the speaker responded with “Plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs”

Alexa challenges 10-year old to touch a live plug with a coin

According to the BBC report the mother said, “We were doing some physical challenges, like laying down and rolling over holding a shoe on your foot, from a [physical education] teacher on YouTube earlier. Bad weather outside. She just wanted another one.” This is when the Alexa-enabled speaker suggested the challenge that it found on the web.

As we’ve said above, the penny challenge isn’t new and has been making the rounds on the internet for the past year.

In a separate Tweet, Kristin Livdahl shared a response from Amazon which reads, “We are currently working with our developers regarding your Alexa concern. As soon as we receive further information, we’ll contact you with an update. In the meantime, please feel free to reply to this email with any questions or concerns you may have”.

Amazon has reportedly fixed the error as soon as it was made aware of it.

Amazon told the BBC in a statement that “it had updated Alexa to prevent the assistant recommending such activity in the future”. The statement reads, “Customer trust is at the center of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide accurate, relevant, and helpful information to customers. As soon as we became aware of this error, we took swift action to fix it.”

5G will finally be rolled out in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gurugram and other Indian cities in 2022

It looks like India will finally receive 5G services in the country. After a long wait, 5G networks are set to hit cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, and Gandhinagar. In fact, we’ve earlier reported that Airtel had started 5G trials in Gurgaon, back in June of this year. So, it looks like 5G will be rolling out in full force across major cities in the country. Airtel has earlier demonstrated a 5G network in Hyderabad back in January, so this launch does line up with various trials that telecom companies have taken part in.

5G networks in India

5G services will finally hit cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and more

For the uninitiated, 5G, the 5th Generation of Wireless Technology, is the next big thing in mobile technology. Just like its predecessors, 5G promises faster data speeds, lower latency, and higher bandwidth, which will make your current mobile networks feel sluggish and outdated. Theoretically, 5G can offer speeds up to 20 Gbps but in the commercial world, 5G carriers are expected to support speeds up to 1Gbps which is 10x the speeds offered by the current 4G LTE networks. The faster data transmission is also accompanied by lower latency. Compared to 4G, which was limited to a ping of 50ms, 5G can theoretically go as low as 1ms! Commercially, one can expect a latency of around 10ms from the 5G carriers.

5g networks in action

The Indian government has also launched the ‘Indigenous 5G Test Best project’ which will see agencies such as IIT Bombay, Delhi collaborating on testing and development of 5G services in the country. In a statement, the Department of Telecom said, “ costing Rs 224 crore, the project is likely to be completed by December 31, 2021, paving the way for end-to-end testing of 5G User Equipment (UEs) and network equipment by 5G stakeholders developing 5G products/services/use cases, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, Academia and Industry in the country.” The Department of Telecom has also allocated the 5G spectrum to telecom giants Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL for 5G trials.

Samsung announces first PCIe 50 SSDs with up to 13GBps read speeds

Samsung has announced its next-generation PCIe 5.0 Nvme enterprise SSDs (PM1743) that almost double the performance compared to PCIe 4.0 drives while improving power efficiency by 30 per cent. To keep with the additional PCIe 5.0 bandwidth, these drives come with a new controller and the latest sixth-generation 128-layers V-Nand.

Samsung confirms that it has been working with Intel to test these next-gen SSDs, presumably with 12th gen Alder Lake CPUs which are also the first mass-market products to support 16 lane PCI 5.0.

“For over a decade, Samsung has been delivering SATA, SAS and PCIe-based SSDs that have been recognized for outstanding performance and reliability by leading enterprise server customers including corporations, governments and financial institutions,” said Yong Ho Song, Executive Vice President and Head of the Memory Controller Development Team at Samsung Electronics. “The introduction of our PCIe 5.0 SSD, along with PCIe 6.0-based product developments that are underway, will further solidify our technological leadership in the enterprise server market.”

PCIe 5.0 SSD performance

PCIe 5.0 drives will be twice as fast as the fastest PCIe 4.0 drives. Samsung claims a peak sequential read speed of 13GBps and a peak sequential write speed of 6.6GBps.

Here are the performance figures Samsung claims:

Sequential Read Speed: 13 GB/ seconds Sequential Write Speed: 6.6 GB/ seconds  Random Read speed: 2.5M IOPS Random Write speed: 250K IOPS Power Efficiency: 608 MB/s per watt (30 per cent boost over PCI 4.0 based Samsung 1733 drives)

Samsung also aads a separate security processor and root of trust to the drive controller to enhance security.

Apart from Samsung, Adata will also be presenting PCI 5.0 based SSD drives at CES and claims 14GBps sequential read speeds and 12GBps sequential write speed for its Project Nighthawk SSDs.

Samsung PCIe 5.0 SSD availability

Samsung’s PM1743 will be offered in 1.92TB to 15.36TB capacity and will hit mass production in the first quarter of 2022.

Samsung will offer the drives in two form factors - conventional 2.5-inch U.2 form factor, as well as in 3-inch EDSFF (E3.S), a new enterprise and data centre form factor. Samsung says that customers deploying 7.5 mm E3.s drives will be able to double the capacity for the same servers as compared to those using 15mm 2.5-inch form factor.

Samsung is bringing HDR 10+ gaming to its 2022 TVs and gaming monitors, heres what you can look forward to

Samsung has announced that its 2022 gaming monitors and TVs (Q70 and higher variants of 2022) will support HDR 10+ gaming. Currently, we have Samsung TVs that support gaming in HDR 10. HDR 10+ gaming will introduce a host of features that will enhance the gaming experience.

“We are extremely proud to announce that the new HDR10+ GAMING standard will be adopted by Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED line up with the Q70 TV series and above and gaming monitors, allowing users to enjoy a game-changing experience through cutting-edge visuals and richer, life-like images,” said Seokwoo Yong, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to invest in users’ viewing experiences as technology continues to advance and provide enhanced new features and capabilities.”

What to expect with HDR 10+ gaming on Samsung TVs and monitors

As mentioned above, Samsung has confirmed that its Q70 TV and higher models will support HDR 10+ gaming. Samsung hasn’t revealed the gaming monitors models that will support HDR 10+ gaming and we can expect the announcement to come in January 2022 when CES Kicks off.

Speaking of some of the features of HDR 10+ gaming, Samsung says that its 2022 TV and gaming monitor lineup will “support the HDR10+ GAMING standard by allowing automated HDR calibration that provides stunning picture quality to meet game developers’ demand”. We are interested to see how this automatic calibration works as it will eliminate the need for manual HDR calibration removing the problem of human error. To date, we have experienced automatic HDR calibration for the PS5 (review) on the Sony A80J TV (review) and you can check it out here.

Samsung Q70 series

HDR 10+ in gaming is expected to offer optimized “brightness and contrast scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame, with more accurate colour expression”. Gamers can expect features like Low-latency, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and over 120Hz. The over 120Hz is interesting as it means PC gamers with capable hardware will be able to game in frame rates higher than 120Hz in HDR 10+ with supported hardware.

“NVIDIA GeForce gamers can enjoy a brighter, more vivid and consistent HDR gaming experience on their monitors or TVs from the support of the new HDR10+ GAMING standard,” said Vijay Sharma, Director of Product Management at NVIDIA.

It will be interesting to see how HDR 10+ translates to the consoles. As of writing this story, the PS5 supports gaming in HDR 10 only while the Xbox Series X (review) supports Dolby Vision gaming on popular titles like Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5 (review), Gears 5 (review) and more.

Dolby Vision gaming supports all the features touted by HDR 10+ gaming with the only catch being Dolby Vision gaming is limited to 120Hz on the LG C1 (review) and G1 (review) when connected to an Xbox Series X. It will be interesting to see how HDR 10+ gaming and Dolby Vision Gaming compare and what advantages HDR 10+ gaming brings by surpassing the 120Hz mark.

Krafton introduces device bans in order to curb cheating in BGMI

Krafton has announced that it will be taking even stricter measures to control hacking or cheating in Battlegrounds Mobile India. The developers will now ban the device itself, instead of just the associated account.

In its official announcement, the developers stated, “ If the use of illegal programs is detected with a mobile device by the newly applied security logic, the device will be permanently banned from using BGMI.”

Up until now, any hacker who was caught using illegal programs would get their account permanently banned. However, they were still free to simply create a new account and continue cheating. With the device ban in place, anyone caught using illegal software will no longer be able to play the game using the same device. This should ensure that players who get caught cheating will no longer get the chance to cheat again unless they get a new device.

Battlegrounds Mobile India: The hacking problem

Hacking and cheating have become a serious problem in Battlegrounds Mobile India. Almost every week, the developers end up banning hundreds of thousands of accounts. In fact, Krafton recently announced that it banned nearly 100,000 accounts almost a week. The developer notes that 99,583 accounts were permanently banned in the period between December 13 and December 19. This was most evident in the period between October 1 and November 10 when the developers claimed to have banned 2,519,692 accounts. At the time, Krafton noted that it was taking four steps to try and curb cheating and will be doubling down on the same. This included the introduction of stronger cheat detection and banning mechanisms. It also stated that while initially, it used to hand out temporary bans for first-time offenders, it will now issue permabans. Further, the developers will now manually verify and ban any account that is used to promote illegal programs among high-rankers in real-time. Finally, it will be working with YouTube to block channels that promote the use of illegal programs.

Xbox Game Pass added games worth more than Rs 4,70,000 in 2021

Let's face it, gaming is an expensive hobby. Not only do you need to spend Rs 50,000 (if you can find it at retail) for the PS5 (review) or Xbox Series X (review), but each new AAA game at launch costs roughly Rs 4000 to Rs 6000 which is quite a lot. While most gamers will wait for a sale or price drop to get their hands on their favourite game, the urge to play a new game at launch is quite palpable especially if it has been reviewed really well.

This is where a service like Game Pass from Microsoft really helps soften the blow and reduces the point of entry to enjoy a great catalogue of games. Xbox Game Pass starts at Rs 489 per month for the consoles or PC and the combination of the two along with access to Games with Gold and EA Play is priced at Rs 699. This is of course, before tax. As of writing this story, new members get access to 8 months of service for the price of one which is incredible value getting you addicted to the service immediately. You can learn more about the features of Game Pass here.

According to a report by The Loadout, “Xbox Game Pass added more than $6,300 of games in 2021” which translates to games worth more than Rs 4,70,000. Let's say that again, games worth more than four lakh seventy thousand rupees.

This includes AAA games from Microsoft themselves such as Halo Infinite, Psychonauts 2, The Ascent and Forza Horizon (review). It also includes a slew of third party games available on the service like Scarlet Nexus, The Gunk, Mortal Kombat 11 (review), Serious Sam 4, A Plague Tale Innocence, Back 4 Blood, Outriders (review), Control (review), and many many more.

Game Pass on Xbox

According to the report, “The month which offered the most value was March 2021, where almost two dozen Bethesda games were added to the service after Microsoft acquired the publisher and its developers. The total value of March’s Game Pass additions is $964.67” (More than Rs 70,000).

The report goes on to say, “Speaking of Bethesda, with 30 games added from the publisher this year, the total of all of them came to $604.71 (slightly over Rs 45,000), just under 10% of the value of 2021’s entire additions to the library”.

Xbox Game Pass is considered the Netflix of Games

Just like Netflix, Microsoft's own “originals” or first-party games will be available on Game Pass for a very long time while the rest of the catalogue keeps getting refreshed based on deals with developers and publishers. It is also a great motivation for someone to try out a game they would have otherwise ignored simply because they weren't sure if they'd like it or not. Personally, I have enjoyed playing games like Scarlet Nexus, The Gunk, Mind Scanners, Back 4 Blood and revisiting classics like the Gears Franchise and the Dead Space trilogy, games I would have otherwise not purchased or missed out on for the one obvious reason - games are expensive.

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then PlayStation is working on its own competitive version of Game Pass alternative and while Sony may not put God of War Ragnarok on the service on launch day, having a catalogue of games to play on day one on your PS5 makes gaming a more financially viable process. Sony has tested the waters of offering a bunch of games as a part of your subscription called PlayStation Collection. You get access to a bunch of games when you subscribe to PS Plus on a PS5 and you can learn more about PlayStation Collection here.

Whatever the case may be, the fact that Xbox has added games worth lakhs in a single year to its service is not only a testament to the success of the service but also the fact that people end up experiencing more games than they otherwise would expanding their horizon and exposing them to new adventures they never knew they'd enjoy. Not to mention help gamers create an even larger pile of shame, also called a backlog!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer gives us hope that Marvel will not ruin the Sorcerer Supreme

After the successful release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony and Marvel have seen the first real hit from the Phase 4 series of films. Almost everything after Endgame was rejected by fans with Black Widow and Shang Chi delivering middling box office returns. The media tried blaming everything without actually addressing the problem. Marvel does not understand the fans anymore. We’re hoping that trend does not continue with the latest in the MCU Phase 4 lineup, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The latest trailer for the second instalment of the adventures of Marvel’s Sorceror Supreme does look like a fun time and the return of Baron Mordo as well as the debut of Evil Strange.

Doctor Strange Multiverse of madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer is out

The Multiverse was first explored in No Way Home with Strange opening up doorways to multiple dimensions in the extended MCU after a botched spell trying to help Peter Parker with a particular conundrum. Rest assured, you’ll find no spoilers here so we’ll keep it as clean as possible. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is essentially a play on the revered H.P Lovecraft tale, At the Mountains of Madness, but we assume it’ll have little to do with the famed horror writer, apart from the name. Could we see the return of the fearsome Dormammu? One thing we do know is that we’ll be getting our first look at Shuma-Gorath. The character was an important part of the Marvel Vs Capcom fight game series and this will be the first time we’re seeing a live-action version of the creature. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, the man behind the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films as well as the Evil Dead trilogy. So, of anything, we know that Raimi can deliver. Our only fear is that the head honchos at Marvel will try and cut him out as they've done with countless directors who've challenged their bland, cookie-cutter aesthetics and storytelling skills.

Doctor Strange

Story details are still under wraps but from what we can see, we assume that it will revolve around the various incarnations of Strange from the multiverse. Could we see different versions of characters from the MCU in the film? We definitely hope so. It’ll give fans a fresh perspective on the characters they’ve fallen in love with over the years. We also get a look at the Scarlet Witch after she enslaved an entire town and never faced any serious repercussions for her heinous actions. In fact, she’s still a hero and is enlisted by Strange to help him with his predicament. We only hope that it’s not the Scarlet Witch film with Strange as a side character. Marvel is perfectly capable of pulling off that horrible bait and switch as the company has made it its mission to shove ‘The Message’ down our throats. We can only hope that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will buck that awful trend.

Apple could be looking at starting production of the iPhone 13 in India very soon

For fans of the iPhone in India, there seems to be a bit of good news on the horizon. Reports have emerged that Apple is looking to start production of the base iPhone 13 in India. It could take up to a few months but we could be seeing an iPhone 13 that is produced in the country. According to various reports online, Foxconn has already started the iPhone 13 (review) trial production in its Chennai plant. How this affects the price of the iPhone 13 in India is unclear as of now, but historically, Apple has stayed true to its pricing strategy and we should not expect a price drop anytime soon.

iPhone 13 base model production in India

iPhone 13 could start production in India soon

The reports have also stated that Apple will not be manufacturing the iPhone 13 Pro (review) and 13 Pro Max in India. The production will only be limited to the base iPhone 13 model. Interestingly, the iPhone 13 is the largest selling model of the 13 series in the country, so it makes all the more sense as to why Apple would look at manufacturing the iPhone 13 here. OnePlus 10 Pro to launch in January, confirms CEO Pete Lau

OnePlus 10 Pro will launch sometime in January, CEO Pete Lau has officially confirmed. The OnePlus 10 Pro is one of the most anticipated flagship phones of 2022 and succeeds the OnePlus 9 Pro. It has been a part of leaks previously and we also know how it’s going to look if OnePlus goes ahead with the same design as seen in leaked renders.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Weibo and confirmed that the OnePlus 10 Pro will launch in January. However, Pete has not revealed the exact date for the launch of the OnePlus 10 Pro. As per earlier rumours, the OnePlus 10 Pro could debut during CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2022 which is slated to commence from January 5 in Las Vegas. That said, the OnePlus’ CES 2022 appearance could likely reveal something other than the OnePlus 10 lineup.

Furthermore, the rumour mill has revealed that the OnePlus 10 Pro will likely debut in China first and will launch globally only after a few months. Here’s everything we know about the OnePlus 10 Pro so far.

OnePlus 10 Pro leaked specifications

The OnePlus 10 Pro features a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display that offers QHD+ (3216x1440 pixels) resolution and supports a 120Hz refresh rate.

The phone has a thickness of 8.7mm as per a previous leak by OnLeaks, and the full dimensions are 163.2 mm x 73.6 mm x 8.7 mm, which is the same as the OnePlus 9 Pro.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is said to feature three cameras on the back which consists of a 50MP main camera with OIS and laser autofocus, a 48MP ultra-wide camera and an 8MP ultra-wide camera with 3x optical zoom.

On the front, there is a 32MP selfie camera. The OnePlus 10 Pro will come equipped with a 5,000mAh battery.

Exclusive: Vivo V23 Pro set for Jan first week launch, to be Indias slimmest 3D curve display phone at 736mm

There have been a number of media reports over the past few weeks about the Vivo V23 Pro launching in India in the coming weeks. And now, we have received some exclusive information about the eagerly awaited device and its launch date.

We have learned from our sources close to the company, the Vivo V23 Pro will be launched in the first week of January 2022. However, the launch won't be on January 4th as reported by certain portals in the past. Instead, it will be closer to the end of the week.

Our source has also shared with us information about the design of the device, claiming the V23 Pro will become "India’s slimmest 3D curve display smartphone at 7.36mm" upon launch. No information about the internals of the device was shared with us, but we expect more details on the same in the coming days.

Also Read: APPLE IPHONE 13 PRO REVIEW: A PRICEY AFFAIR

But if previous leaks about the device are to be believed, the Vivo V23 Pro could bring some major upgrades over the V21 phones that were launched earlier this year. One of the upgrades could be in the camera department, with the phone likely to get a 64-megapixel primary lens at the back.

Vivo V23 Pro: Expected specs

Under the hood, the Vivo V23 Pro is likely to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset, which has been a mainstay on a number of powerful midrange gaming smartphones in 2021. The chip was also used on the company's high-end phone, the X70. This chip is expected to be paired with 8GB RAM on the device. However, much like its other recent phones, the Vivo V23 Pro could also come expandable RAM feature. This could add up to 5GB of virtual memory to the phone to help it handle memory-intensive apps. Other than this, the phone could also flaunt a 120Hz refresh rate AMOLED display along with offering support for fast 55W charging.

Nvidia announces RTX 2050 powered laptops along with GeForce MX550 and MX570

As gaming laptops become more affordable, Nvidia is looking at lowering the bar for modern gaming even more with the announcement of the RTX 2050 GPU. Laptops that come with the RTX 2050 will hit markets sometime in mid-2022. We have no idea what these newer RTX 2050 laptops will cost but they should be cheaper than laptops with an RTX 3050. The RTX 2050 is based on the Ampere GA107 architecture which also shaped the 3050. This essentially means that gamers will be able to experience games with ray-tracing enabled.

Nvidia RTX 2050 laptops

Nivida also announced the GeForce MX550 as well as the GeForce MX570 gaming laptops. From what we can see, these two laptops will be aimed at the low-end segment of the market, with mainly first-time customers looking for a laptop that can run the most games at a decent price. Nvidia has not released the specs for these cards and has only said that they offer “more CUDA Cores” and “faster memory speeds”. We will just have to wait and see what exactly these laptops offer once we get our hands on them.

Nvidia's new RTX 2050 laptops have been announced

Intel says that we do not have enough computing power to sustain an immersive metaverse

Much of the energy this year has been focused on how the next generation of the internet will be built and controlled. Intel today talked about Metaverse, the upcoming connected virtual world that everyone wants a piece of, and acknowledged that it “may be the next major platform in computing after the world wide web and mobile”. However, it also cautioned that we still have a long way to go before we get to the utopian dream.

Intel says that we don’t have nearly the computing power that’s needed to drive such a virtual experience. In fact, we are not even close.

“We need several orders of magnitude more powerful computing capability, accessible at much lower latencies across a multitude of device form factors. To enable these capabilities at scale, the entire plumbing of the internet will need major upgrades,” notes Raja Koduri, Senior vice president, General manager of the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group at Intel in an editorial.

Koduri appositely explains that it’s even a challenge to put two people in a convincing virtual space. “Consider what is required to put two individuals in a social setting in an entirely virtual environment: convincing and detailed avatars with realistic clothing, hair and skin tones – all rendered in real-time and based on sensor data capturing real-world 3D objects, gestures, audio and much more; data transfer at super-high bandwidths and extremely low latencies; and a persistent model of the environment, which may contain both real and simulated elements. Now, imagine solving this problem at scale – for hundreds of millions of users simultaneously”

“Truly persistent and immersive computing, at scale and accessible by billions of humans in real-time, will require even more: a 1,000-times increase in computational efficiency from today’s state of the art.”

Also Check: Oppo Find N Foldable Phone with 'waterdrop' Hinge launched at Inno Day event   He further notes that hardware improvements alone aren’t going to narrow this gap. Software and algorithm improvements will have to pitch in, and hopefully, we will have enough to sustain an immersive metaverse experience in about 5 years.

Of course, enough computing power isn’t the only hurdle before we do establish a meaningful metaverse. Arguably another important aspect will be to implement standards that will ensure that the metaverse is decentralized and to perhaps regulate the forays of Big Tech.

India is tipped to be the fastest growing mobile and PC games market globally

Video games have surpassed even movies as the most profitable form of entertainment. From a hobby in the 80s to now being one of the largest industries in the world, gaming has come a  long way. In fact, a new report by Niko Partners states that Indian is the fastest growing gaming market in the world. Niko Partners is a market research and consulting firm covering video games, esports, and streaming in Asia. Asia-10 countries include, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

India is the fastest-growing mobile and PC gaming market in the world
