Samsung Galaxy M40 confirmed to feature 32MP rear camera, 16MP selfie shooter
Just a day after Amazon teased the Galaxy M40 smartphone on its platform, a media report has said that the phone would be equipped with a 32MP sensor at the back and a 16MP selfie shooter. Citing Asim Warsi, Senior Vice President of Smartphone Business, Samsung India, the report from 91 Mobiles said that the phone would launch at a price of around Rs 20,000. The Galaxy M40 is the company’s fourth phone in the M-series.
The Galaxy M40 will launch in India on June 11 at 6 PM, and will sell on Amazon. The landing page on Samsung's website shows the M40 featuring an Infinity-O display with the punch hole on the top left of the screen. On the back, the phone is seen sporting a triple camera setup, but there is no concrete info about the resolution of the sensors and nature of the lenses associated with those sensors. The three cameras are situated on the top left corner with an LED flash under the setup. Apart from the three cameras, the rear panel also shows a fingerprint sensor.
As per Amazon’s listing, the Samsung Galaxy M40 will be powered by a Snapdragon 6 series platform. It is expected to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 that can be seen as a major upgrade over the Exynos 7904 which powers both the Galaxy M20 and the Galaxy M30. Previous reports have suggested that the phone will tout up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.
The Galaxy M40 may feature a Super AMOLED display. It could be backed by a large 5000mAh battery and is expected to run on Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box. The handset reportedly bears SM-M405F model number, and has already been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Incidentally, a device with the same model number was also spotted on Geekbench.

Google apologises for accidentally spamming Duo users worldwide with video ad from Indian cricket team
Google accidentally spammed users of its video calling app, Duo, with a message from the Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli. Many users reported receiving an unexpected video message from someone who wasn’t on their contact list. On opening the notification, they were greeted with Kohli, who thanked them for their wishes and asked them to “Keep cheering for Team India on Duo”. While some people speculated that Google Duo might be starting to show ads, the company has acknowledged and apologised for the message which was accidentally pushed out to users worldwide.
In a support thread, a Google employee states that the video message was sent accidentally to unintended recipients. “This was not an ad -- it was a message that users in India were intended to receive as a thank you if they chose to participate in an upcoming Duo promotion,” says the Google employee. Additionally, it is confirmed that Kohli was not added as a contact and as soon as one deletes the received video, one will no longer see it in Duo. Some users also complained about being unable to clear the notification of receiving the message. They can long press on the Duo app icon to see a menu show where swiping left or right will remove a notification.
Anyone else get this random #duo message from @imVkohli? #googleduo #ViratKohli pic.twitter.com/3COS3VxaeK
— Laura Eileen (@Rawr_b4_coffee) May 30, 2019While the message was intended for select Indian Google Duo audience, AndroidPolice notes that users in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and New Zealand have reported receiving the above promotional video message. While it’s good news that Google Duo is not jumping on the ads bandwagon, this ‘accident’ of pushing a video ad did cause some worry for users. Google might not have any current plans of making ads a norm on Duo, but WhatsApp will start showing ads from next year. Olivier Ponteville, the Head of Media at Be Connect Agency who tweeted out the announcement along with a photo.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releasing for PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 25, new trailer revealed
Call of Duty Modern Warfare isn’t a sequel to 2011’s Modern Warfare 3. The game is a sequel and a soft reboot of the 2007 game with the same name. In Modern Warate, there will be a single player campaign where players will “take on the role of highly-skilled Tier One operators in an incredibly raw and gritty narrative affecting the global balance of power.” The campaign of the game will be split in two, to give players a diverse perspective on the story. In one half, players will play as a Tier 1 operator, a special forces soldier. In the second half, players will take on the role of a rebel fighter in the Middle East.
According to the Activision Blog Post, “The new Modern Warfare delivers an emotionally charged and intense campaign that shines a light on the changing nature of modern war. Expect a single-player experience that is edgy, culturally relevant, and thought-provoking. Players will fight alongside a diverse cast of international special forces and freedom fighters working within the grey area of their rules of engagement, in a number of heart-pounding covert operations set throughout iconic European cities and into the volatile expanses of the Middle East. Missions include close-quarter, stealth operations and long-range combat that puts tactical decision-making to the ultimate test.” You can watch the trailer for the game below:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was a genre-defining game bringing FPS war based games in a modern era. Call of Duty has itself been a fan favourite franchise when it comes to FPS games booth with single-player campaigns and online multiplayer. However, games like Halo, Battlefield, Bioshock, Metro, Titanfall and more have given the Call of Duty franchise a run for its money. Maybe it’s time the series went back to the roots that made the franchise so desirable.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 wont have headphone jack, physical buttons: Report
Samsung generally launches its Note series flagship in August, which means this is the time that rumours and leaks about the phone start to crop up in numbers. In one such rumour, the Note 10 is reported to launch without any physical buttons and 3.5mm headphone jack. Android Police reports that the phone won’t have the power, volume and Bixby buttons, and they would be replaced by capacitive or pressure-sensitive areas. According to the report, these pressure sensitive areas will likely be highlighted by some kind of raised ‘bump’ and/or texture on the edge.
This is not the first time that reports have pointed about a button-less design of the Note 10. Previously, a Korean media outlet had reported that Samsung could have “mechanisms, gestures, and touch-based inputs” to enable functions like summoning the AI-powered virtual assistant Bixby, power on/off the phone and increase/decrease volume. There is no information on whether Samsung intends to carry over the same design to next year’s Galaxy S11 devices.
As far as the 3.5mm headphone jack is concerned, Samsung is probably the last company to get rid of the tech from its flagship phones. Arguably, the 3.5mm jack was one of the key reasons why people chose Samsung devices over others. Premium smartphone makers including, Apple, Google, OnePlus and even Xiaomi (Mi 9) have removed the headphone jacks from their devices, and are offering adapters instead to complement their devices. Samsung's decision to remove the headphone jack is likely to make space for a larger battery.
The displays are becoming more vibrant and its seems that OEMs are now understanding the need for large batteries in the phones. For example, Redmi K20 and OnePlus 7 Pro ship with 4,000 mAh batteries. Samsung Galaxy S10+ houses a 4,100 mah battery pack. Rumours have suggested that a variant of the Galaxy Note 10 might come equipped with a 4500 mAh battery, which is similar to the Galaxy S10 5G phone. Reportedly, the Note device will come with charging “faster than 25W”.

Google rolls out Popular Dishes feature on Google Maps created using crowdsourced images
You clicked it, tagged it and Google created a feature thanks to your contributions. For months, Google has been asking Google Maps users to tag restaurant dishes by clicking pictures and adding names to them. Through this, Google created a bank of information to offer a new feature called Popular Dishes in apps. Google Maps will now show popular dishes from a restaurant, based on the images clicked, tagged and reviewed by users. This is an approach Google has used since a long time to train its image recognition algorithms. Remember identifying street signs in reCAPTCHA? That probably helped Google create image recognition features for lens or event its autonomous cars.
Coming back to Google Maps, now when you search for a restaurant on the app, you can head over to its Menu tab (not available for all restaurants) to see the Popular Dishes section right on top. The section features user clicked images in square tiles, with options given for the number of pictures and reviews for that dish at the bottom. Tapping on the dish will present all the user reviews in a list, accompanied by the names of these users. Some of these reviews are also generated by Google’s Local Guides, people who share reviews, photos, and knowledge about the places around them on Google Maps. Local Guides are also rewarded with points for tagging and reviewing dishes on Maps.
There’s also an option to edit reviews and mark changes like wrong dish names, inappropriate dish name and dish not served here. Moreover, Google Map users can tap the + button to add their own images of dishes as well as tag them to help Google better its Popular Dishes recommendations.
“At the end of the day, this feature is made possible because of contributions from people around the world who want to help others using Google Maps. So if you want to pay it forward to the next diner, simply take a photo of your meal (before you’ve scarfed it down!) and add a dish name so others can know what’s good on the menu,” Google noted in a blog post.
Popular Dishes is now live on Google Maps for Android devices worldwide and will be rolled out to iOS users in the coming months.

Microsoft Xbox Game Pass comes to PC: All you need to know
One of the best things to happen to the Xbox two years ago was a little service called Xbox Game Pass. It gives gamers access to more than a hundred games for a monthly fee. The service includes all Xbox first party games at launch. Game Pass is now making its debut to the PC. Rather than being called the PC Game Pass, Microsoft is still calling the service Xbox Game Pass, which leads many to think that their service from the console could be carried forward to the PC. Whether this is the case or not isn't clear as the release doesn't detail a price for the service nor a launch date. It also doesn't highlight whether the PC version of the Xbox Game Pass will be bundled with Game Pass Unlimited. For those unaware, Game Pass Unlimited gives users Xbox Live Gold subscription and Xbox Game Pass subscription in one roof. More information about the new service will come at E3 2019.
Coming back to Xbox Game Pass for the PC, the service will give players unlimited access to a curated library of more than 100 PC games on Windows 10. The list of developers that will support the service includes Bethesda, Deep Silver, Devolver Digital, Paradox Interactive, SEGA, and more. Microsoft has said that titles from newly acquired studios like Obsidian and inXile will also be available to Game Pass subscribers on the PC and the consoles. Microsoft says, “We’re working with over 75 developers and publishers to bring PC content to the service and we’ll ensure the library remains curated and full of great PC titles across a variety of genres, with new games added every month.”
Xbox Game Pass for PC members will also receive the benefits enjoyed by console players. Gamers will get discounts in the Microsoft Store on Windows of up to 20% on games currently in the library and up to 10% off related game DLC and add-ons. Microsoft has also said that they are bringing cross-platform play and cross-network play across Windows 10 PCs and console. Microsoft says, “Building communities across all of those players, regardless of the store or platform they’ve chosen (console or PC), is also vitally important because it helps bring players together, allows games to find their largest audience and allows gaming to deliver its true potential of uniting people around the power of play.”
Microsoft has also said that their first party games will be available in multiple stores, including the Microsoft Store on Windows. The company has said that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will come to PC later this year, launching on Steam in addition to the Microsoft Store on Windows. “We will continue to add to the more than 20 Xbox Game Studios titles on Steam, starting with Gears 5 and all Age of Empires I, II & III: Definitive Editions. We know millions of PC gamers trust Steam as a great source to buy PC games and we’ve heard the feedback that PC gamers would like choice. We also know that there are other stores on PC, and we are working to enable more choice in which store you can find our Xbox Game Studios titles in the future.”
You can read the announcement in details on the Xbox News website here.

Google restricts marijuana facilitating apps on Play Store
Google has updated its content policy for the Play Store and it has now restricted the functioning of all apps that sell or facilitate the sale of marijuana, regardless of legality. According to the new guidelines, "allowing users to order marijuana through an in-app shopping cart feature, assisting users in arranging delivery or pick up of marijuana, and facilitating the sale of products containing THC" are no more allowed on the platform.
Google has apparently pointed out two popular apps, Weedmaps and Eaze, and restricted their functioning. “These apps simply need to move the shopping cart flow outside of the app itself to be compliant with this new policy. We've been in contact with many of the developers and are working with them to answer any technical questions and help them implement the changes without customer disruption,” Android Police quoted Google as saying.
The move is linked to the company’s efforts towards making the Google Play Store safer for children. Google says that it has taken inputs from users and developers and is evolving its Google Play policies to provide additional protections for children and families. “These policy changes build on our existing efforts to ensure that apps for children have appropriate content, show suitable ads, and handle personally identifiable information correctly; they also reduce the chance that apps not intended for children could unintentionally attract them,” Kanika Sachdeva, Product Manager, Google Play, wrote in a blog post.
As part of the new policy, all developers are now required to complete the new target audience and content section of the Google Play Console. For most developers, the target audience does not include children, but if kids are part of an app’s target audience, Google will ask the developers some follow-up questions.
Meanwhile, Eaze has issued a statement claiming that it connects adults only to licensed, regulated cannabis retailers. “In California, and many other markets across the nation, lawmakers have established clear cannabis laws and regulations. Google’s decision is a disappointing development that only helps the illegal market thrive, but we are confident that Google, Apple, and Facebook will eventually do the right thing and allow legal cannabis companies to do business on their platforms. We regret any inconvenience this may cause for customers and patients,” The Verge quoted a company spokesperson as saying.

Sony Xperia F could be a foldable phone with Samsungs flexible OLED display, 5G connectivity
Sony has ceased its smartphone operations in India, and most other regions, to focus on releasing phones in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Europe. The smartphone maker was rumoured to be dropping its Xperia lineup and shift to a new series. However, a new report out of China suggests that the company might be working on a foldable phone called the Xperia F, which could be launched next year. This phone is said to adopt Samsung’s flexible OLED display technology with a 21:9 aspect ratio, which the company’s current flagship Xperia 1 smartphone features. Additionally, the handset is said to support 5G connectivity and the company is expected to announce the Xperia 2 smartphone next year.
While there are no specifics about the Xperia F, the report hints at the growing popularity of foldable phones. Samsung and Huawei have already unveiled their respective foldable phones and while things aren’t looking too good for Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, we are yet to come across any initial impressions of the Huawei Mate X. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is facing harsh criticism as the handset it had sent to reviewers in the US were recalled as their inner display malfunctioned. The company later issued a statement confirming the development, saying that it planned to “announce the release date in the coming weeks.”
Coming back to Sony, the company’s mobile division is being scaled back to reduce losses and drive profits up in the long term. As for the existing Sony smartphone users, the company said that it ceased sales in India in FY18, but will continue to provide customer support operations including after sales support and software updates for existing customers in the country. The company also said that it will be “monitoring the market situation and business feasibility in India”. So, there’s a possibility that the company could resume its operations in India if it finds it viable to do so.

Latest smartphones with 8GB to 12GB RAM
The amount of RAM included in smartphones has increased to a point where 6GB and 8GB RAM doesn’t turn heads anymore. Now, phones with 10GB and 12GB RAM are also a thing. While we are still pondering over what we can do with so much RAM, it’s never a bad thing to have more than you need. Who knows, maybe in the future, there could be applications and games that will demand more RAM. Presently, the minimum RAM you’d require to ensure smooth performance in general is 4GB. Anything above that is ensuring you have enough resources available should you need it while multitasking. More RAM also ensures your system doesn’t have to sacrifice resources to make a game run smoother. With at least 8GB RAM, you can swiftly minimise your game, make a call, take a photo and then go back to the game, while with 10GB RAM and above, you can actually keep your game minised for long hours. We do that regularly with the OnePlus 7 Pro where PUBG Mobile is kept pinned to the recents menu and loads straight to the lobby when we select the game.
If you’re in the market for a phone that can handle intensive tasks like gaming and multitasking, these are the 8GB, 10GB and 12GB RAM phones you should look at —
Smartphones with 12GB RAM12GB is presently the most amount of RAM you can get in a smartphone. Presently, there are only a handful of phones that offer 12GB RAM but we expect this space to fill up as the year progresses.
OnePlus 7 Pro (Buy Here)
Price: Rs 57,999
The OnePlus 7 Pro’s top end variant comes with 12GB of RAM along with 256GB UFS 3.0 storage and Snapdragon 855 chipset. The phone, as a result, is blazing fast with minimal chance of slowing down no matter what you do on the device. The OnePlus 7 Pro also features a QHD+ AMOLED display with HDR10+ certification. The display stretches to the edges thanks to a pop-up camera module while on the back is a triple-camera setup consisting of a wide-angle lens, a primary 48MP lens and a telephoto lens that offers 3X zoom. Clearly, there’s no dearth of features on this device.
Black Shark 2 (Buy Here) Price: Rs 49,999
The Black Shark 2 entered the Indian market very recently. Offered as an all-out gaming device, the 12GB RAM actually makes sense on this device, more than the OnePlus 7 Pro. You can argue, at least that you need the resources for gaming longer, even though there are no games or apps whatsoever that will eat up all 12GB of RAM. The Black Shark 2 comes with a 6.39-inch FHD+ HDR AMOLED display with improved touch latency while a dedicated button optimises the device for gaming. The Snapdragon 855 powers the gaming phone and offers 256GB UFS 2.1 storage. On the back is a 48MP camera paired with a telephoto lens while on the front is a 20MP sensor. The Black Shark 2 is notable for its ability to pair with a large screen and two gamepads on each side. It has also has enhanced cooling tech and a fan-case that can apparently bring down the core temperature by 10 degrees in 10 seconds.
Samsung Galaxy S10+ (Buy Here) Price: Rs 1,17,000
A premium flagship armed to the teeth. The top-end variant of the Galaxy S10+ offers 12GB of RAM and a whopping 1TB of storage, so there’s no dearth of resources available on the device. The phone is powered by the Exynos 9820 in India and comes with a triple-camera setup on the back which includes a wide-angle and a telephoto sensor. On the front, the Galaxy S10+ offers a Infinity-O display with the front camera drilled into the top right corner of the 6.4-inch QHD+ AMOLED display.
Latest Phones with 10GB RAMWhile there are handful of phones with 10GB RAM available in overseas markets, in India, only the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition offers 10GB of RAM. But that too was a limited edition device and will soon be phased out now that the OnePlus 7 Pro is here.
OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition (Buy Here) Price: Rs 46,999
The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition was launched as a special edition with a new design and 10GB of RAM instead of 8GB RAM that’s there on the regular OnePlus 6T. The McLaren Edition features a custom design that’s inspired from a race-car design. It even has the orange hue which is a McLaren signature. Along with 10 gigs of RAM, it has 256GB UFS 2.1 storage and Snapdragon 845 SoC.
Smartphones with 8GB RAMWhile OnePlus and a few others were early adopters of 8GB RAM, this RAM variant is now present in quite a few smartphones starting from the mid-range segment.
Samsung Galaxy S10+ (Buy Here) Price: Rs 91,900
There are two variants of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ that offers 8GB RAM. One comes with 128GB storage and another with 512GB storage. The rest of the features on the phone are the same.
Huawei P30 Pro (Buy Here) Price: Rs 71,990
Huawei might be going through a tough time, but the company has assured that the devices already available in the market will not be impacted by the US ban. The flagship Huawei P30 Pro offers 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and is powered by the flagship Kirin 980 SoC. The P30 Pro’s claim to fame is the triple-camera setup on the back that allows for up to 50X hybrid zoom.
Oppo Reno 10X Zoom (Buy Here) Price: Rs 49,990
The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom is the latest flagship from Oppo and is also centered around the camera and the design. The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom as the name suggests offers 10X zoom using a periscope-camera setup. The camera on the front is housed in a pop-up module in the shape of a shark-fin. The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom is also comes with the flagship Snapdragon 855 processor along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
OnePlus 7 (Buy Here) Price: Rs 37,99
The OnePlus 7 is the leaned-down offering that sits below the OnePlus 7 Pro. This one offers more value for money as the hardware under the hood is essentially the same with Snapdragon 855, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. However, the display has the same U-shaped notch as its predecessor while on the back is a dual camera unit.
Vivo V15 Pro (Buy Here) Price: Rs 29,990
The Vivo V15 Pro was available in a 6GB RAM variant before and only recently did Vivo offer the updrage. The V15 Pro is notable for the triple-camera setup on the back and its bezel-less display that offers an in-display fingerprint sensor and a pop-up module for the front camera.
Honor View20 (Buy Here) Price: Rs 45,999
The Honor View20 came early this year with a taste of things to expect in the next few months. The phones runs on the flagship Kirin 980 and comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. On the back, there is a 48MP camera along with 3D ToF sensor that allows motion gaming.
Xiaomi Poco F1 (Buy Here) Price: Rs 28,999
The Poco F1 was last year’s most affordable flagship phone and with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, it’s performance will be nearly as good as the premium offerings from last year. The display and the body might be of a lower quality, but that’s what budget flagships need to do to keep the costs down.

Moto Z4 with Snapdragon 675, 4GB RAM appears on Geekbench
The Moto Z4 has been leaked in the past and now the phone has been spotted on the Geekbench website. It scores 2346 points in Single Core and 6248 points in Multi Core benchmarking tests. The phone is seen featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 mobile platform along with 4GB of RAM. The hardware is in line with previous reports, which also claimed that the phone will ship with 6GB RAM. As per the new listing, the Moto Z4 would run on Android 9 Pie.
The development comes a day after media reports said that the phone, which is yet to be announced officially, was sold to a person via Amazon. The customer who bought the phone even posted a hands-on video after he received the device. The Amazon listing not only confirmed the 6.4-inch display, but also gave information about the type of the panel used. It said that the phone features an OLED FullVision display with a 2,340 x 1080 pixel resolution.
The Moto Z4 is likely to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. In terms of camera, the phone is speculated to sport a single 48MP sensor on the back. On the front is a 25MP sensor housed within a waterdrop notch. The phone is said to pack a 3600mAh battery with 15W TurboCharge support.
Earlier this month, a few images of the Moto Z4 were leaked showing a protruding camera module with a single lens and Motorola’s signature bat-wing logo. On the right edge, the phone is seen sporting a volume rocker and a power button. At the bottom, there is a USB-C port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a microphone. On the top edge, the Z4 has the secondary mic and a SIM card slot along with a speaker.
The images also showed pogo pins on the back, and reportedly, the smartphone will also support the 5G Moto Mod. In phone’s first impression video (mentioned above), the handset is said to have a problem with the fit of the Moto mod. It doesn’t really sit flush with the phone leaving a slight gap between the panel and the mod.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphone 700 with eight mics, active noise cancellation announced
Bose has announced its new flagship Noise Cancelling Headphone 700 that succeeds the much lauded QC35 IIs. The new headphone is touted to deliver even better sound quality with the company’s proprietary active equalization, which is said to refrain from boosting lows, mids and highs as this can contribute to listening fatigue over time. The device should also be able to pick up conversations easily with the help of four microphones, two of which are said to isolate a user’s speech while the other two work on detecting and reducing ambient noise. In addition to the new NC Headphone 700, Bose has also laid out its roadmap that consists of the Bose Earbuds 500 which launches later this year, and the Noise Cancelling Earbuds 700 which will be revealed next year.
The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphone 700 is priced at $399 (Rs 27,824 approx) and will go on sale from May 30 in the US. The company has not announced the pricing of the Bose Earbuds 500 and the Noise Cancelling Earbuds 700. The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphone 700 comes with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integration, and features support for Siri as well. A software update is also available for the device that enables wake word access to invoke Alexa so that one can use voice command to call up the digital assistant.
The headphone is said to improve on noise cancellation with better circuitry and a new digital signal processing system, which is said to remove the familiar hissing noise when ANC is on. The device will also offer 11 different intensity levels of noise cancellation to choose from. There’s also a ‘full-transparency experience’ that will be available under Conversation Mode and is touted to let ambient sounds pass-through the device’s earcups completely.
The new Bose flagship headphone features a new design that somewhat resembles the Sony WH-1000XM3. It uses stainless-steel in its construction and is said to feature fewer “visible screws, seams, and joints than the industry standard.” Bose has finally added touch based controls this time that will enable users to play/pause music, control volume, skip tracks and more. There are three physical buttons as well, one for powering the device on and off, another to call up a set digital assistant and one for accessing noise cancellation levels. Bose claims that the headphones will deliver 20 hours of battery life.

WhatsApp update allows consecutive audio message playback on Android
WhatsApp has rolled out an update for the app's Android version that allows consecutive playback of audio messages received in a chat. The Android update version 2.19.150 brings this support and now both the OS platforms have this capability. The support on iOS was rolled out in October 2018 with version 2.18.10022. The first mention of this feature was in March when WABetainfo reported that the instant messaging app would release the update later in the year.
This may not be a big update for many of us but it will certainly save the hassle of tapping the ‘Play’ button over and over again to listen to a string of voice messages. You just have to tap on the first message received and others will automatically play by themselves. It should be noted that if a users sends an audio message, a text message and again an audio message, then the two audio files will not be played one after the other.
Further, WhatsApp has also added two new sounds to the app. The first sound, a short chime, will play after a user has listened to an audio message. With each audio message read, the same sound will mark the completion of the audio file. The second sound, a long chime, will play after a user finishes listening to all the audio messages.
Recently, the company announced that it would start putting advertisements in WhatsApp Status to monetise the instant messaging platform. The Status feature allows users to post short videos and images that disappear after 24 hours. The feature was first introduced in Snapchat but later Facebook incorporated it in all its apps including Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Instagram already shows ads while you watch people’s Stories.

Microsoft hints at always connected modern OS that delivers invisible background updates and more
Microsoft is rumoured to be working on an OS but has not yet confirmed whether it is Windows 11, a lite version of Windows or something completely new. However, the company has started dropping some hints about its next OS. At the ongoing Computex 2019 event, it hinted at an OS that is touted to enable better computing on devices coming out in the future. First spotted by The Verge, Microsoft has delved some information on the OS in a blog post. Microsoft envisions its "modern OS" with ‘seamless updates’ that are invisibly carried out in the background without causing any interruptions. If these features sound somewhat familiar, it’s because Chrome OS already follows the same philosophy with background updates and no interruptions.
“An OS that provides a set of enablers that deliver the foundational experiences customers expect from their devices, and includes a set of delighters that deliver innovative human centric experiences,” states Microsoft’s blog post. Additionally, this modern OS by the company is said to be secure by default as “the state is separated from the operating system; compute is separated from applications.” This sounds like there could be loads of cloud processing involved, which could also be beneficial for less powerful devices. The OS is also expected to be always connected with Wi-Fi, LTE and 5G options that “will just work”.
This ‘modern OS’ is touted to deliver sustained performance from the moment a user picks up their device. One might have noticed that while Microsoft is revealing a good chunk of info about this “modern OS”, it has not mentioned Windows anywhere. However, from all the hints it dropped in its blog post, we can only speculate that the company is describing its upcoming operating system. It is also more or less confirmed that the company’s upcoming, and presumably future, operating systems will offer seamless updates, 5G connectivity, cloud-powered apps, security improvements, support new form factors, and AI.

Microsoft introduces Google Lens-like Character Recognition in Excel for iOS to convert smartphone photos into spreadsheets
Microsoft seems to be taking hints from Google’s image recognition techniques. The software giant has introduced a new feature on Microsoft Excel for iOS, to help users covert their images into spreadsheets. Data presented on a piece of paper within columns and rows can simply be snapped using a smartphone camera. This data can then be converted into an editable Excel spreadsheet using the app’s Data from Picture feature. Microsoft uses a combination of optical character recognition (OCR) and machine learning to identify the characters on the paper and input them into a digital spreadsheet. In the past, we’ve seen OCR implementation on Google Lens which allows users to scan any image using their smartphone camera and extract text from it into an editable digital format.
Microsoft Excel's OCR feature was first announced in September 2018 and was made available on Android in March 2019. The image recognition tool in the Microsoft Excel Android and iOS apps is available through a button called Insert Data from Picture. “New image recognition functionality automatically converts the picture to a fully editable table in Excel, eliminating the need for you to manually enter data,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post explaining the feature. You can head here to see an instructional video on how to copy data from an image to an Excel spreadsheet.
Beyond Excel, Microsoft is also giving users the ability to copy data written on White boards using ink grab. Users can now take a picture of their notes scribbled on a physical whiteboard and convert them to digital ink in the Microsoft Whiteboard app. The company has also built handwriting recognition into OneNote, so users can convert handwritten notes to digital text quickly.
“We envision that you’ll be able to take a picture of handwritten notes on paper and import the text directly. Other areas we’re exploring include scanning a picture, PDF annotation, and signing,” Microsoft noted in its blog post.

Huawei returns on SD Association, Wi-Fi Alliance member lists
Huawei has made a return to the company lists of SD Association and Wi Fi Alliance after a brief removal. The company’s name was removed from their respective lists following the ban imposed by the Trump Administration earlier this month. The SD Association is a global ecosystem of companies setting memory card standards that simplify the use of consumer electronics, including mobile phones. Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi Alliance is an organisation that certifies Wi-Fi products for conformity to certain standards of interoperability.
This may not be an indication that everything is going to be fine for Huawei. It is possible that both these authorities have added the Chinese tech company to their list for the 90-day permit to push out updates for existing phones. Just a day after blacklisting it, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce offered Huawei a temporary 90-day license to conduct business and provide updates for the smartphones that are already in the market.
Things are not looking fine for the company because a number major equipment and services suppliers have already cut trade ties from the company. Huawei, however, says it was well prepared for the rainy days. The company is reportedly developing its own OS, which may be called the Ark OS. The company was also reported to be in talks with Aptoide as Google Play Store alternative for future smartphones.
Recently, Huawei filed a motion for summary judgment against the US government to accelerate the process of removing the trade ban. The company argues the constitutionality of Section 889 of the 2019 US National Defense Authorization Act (2019 NDAA), and wants it thrown out. The Section 889 of the Act prohibits government agencies from procuring telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE. It alleges that the US government has provided no evidence to show that Huawei is a security threat.

iOS apps reportedly sharing massive amounts of data with tracking companies when you sleep
Ever since Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica data fiasco was exposed, users have become more aware and intersted in knowing how their data is collected and/or shared. Multiple companies are also touting to be more privacy centric now and Apple is one such conglomerate that has always expressed how it values user privacy and takes steps to ensure its users are protected. However, a new report by The Washington Post's Geoffrey Fowler sheds light on how iPhone apps are using trackers that users don’t know about to send a high volume of user data to tracking companies. Fowler took help of the privacy firm Disconnect to test his iPhone, apps on which reportedly sent 1.5GB worth of personal information to tracking companies over a period of one month.
In the research, Fowler found that apps from some top companies were sending user data to tracking companies. These apps included Nike, Yelp, Spotify, Microsoft OneDrive, Mint, IBM’s The Weather Channel, DoorDash, the crime-alert service app Citizen, and even The Washington Post's own iOS app. As per the report, over 5,400 trackers were encountered, mostly in apps, in one week of testing. Most of these trackers are said to work inconspicuously without the user knowing that they are running in the background and sending data. This data is then used to tailor and target ads at a user.
As for data being sent at night, the service is apparently activated when the phone is charging. The trackers are activated when there’s less possibility of them interfering with other functions of the device. This is said to happen if one has enabled “background app refresh” function, which is enabled by default on an Apple device. DoorDash is a food-delivery service in California, US, and its app was found sending data to nine third-party trackers. On the other hand, an app for location-based crime reports called Citizen was found sharing Fowler’s phone number, email and exact GPS coordinates with a tracker called Amplitude. The app was later updated to remove the Amplitude tracker, after its developers were contacted.
“For the data and services that apps create on their own, our App Store Guidelines require developers to have clearly posted privacy policies and to ask users for permission to collect data before doing so. When we learn that apps have not followed our Guidelines in these areas, we either make apps change their practice or keep those apps from being on the store,” Apple told The Washington Post in a statement. As the report points out, not all data collection is bad, especially when the data collected is anonymised and transiently stored. However, some of these trackers were collecting and sending data without disclosing what type of data is collected, for what duration it is collected and with whom it is shared.

ICC World Cup 2019: How and when to livestream matches in different languages, follow match updates on Google Search
ICC World Cup 2019 will kick off starting today. Ten teams will play 48 matches between May 30, 2019 and July 14, 2019 to decide which teams and players reign champion in the game of cricket. The first match in the Round-robin World Cup tournament will kick off at 3PM today when home team England meets South Africa for the first tussle. While a lot of Indians will be stuck to their TV screens for the duration of the cup, many would be stuck at work without access to live television. Here are a bunch of solutions for those who want to watch live world cup matches and follow the ball-by-ball action online, on their smartphones, smat TVs, Fire TV Sticks, or desktop computers.
How to watch World Cup 2019 Online? As usual, the most popular platform for streaming live cricket matches in India will also be streaming the ICC World Cup 2019. Hotstar has exclusive rights to live stream all World Cup 2019 matches on its app across smartphones, web browsers, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, Roku TV and more. Users can simply download the Hotstar app and start streaming world cup matches in 6 different languages. This year, Hotstar US and Canada customers will also be able to live stream World Cup 2019 matches through all the above mentioned sources.
Fans should note that there is at least a 4-5 minute lag between the live broadcast and what they see on Hotstar. This way, streamers could find themselves 4-5 balls behind the live match.
Hotstar will also be retaining its Watch ‘N Play feature during ICC World Cup 2019 live streams. The social interactivity layer was first introduced on the streaming platform with IPL 2019. Hotstar claims 64.4 million users who engaged on the platform’s Watch ‘N Play social feature during the IPL tournament, and 1.2 billion users answered Watch ‘N Play game questions, sent over 5.9 billion emojis, and 43.5 million comments.
The first match between England and South Africa will start at 3PM IST today. India's first match will happen on June 5 against South Africa at 3 PM IST.
How to follow World Cup match updates online? While there are multiple cricket-focussed websites out there, Google Search is one of the best sources to follow match schedules, timings, updates and more. Simply typing in World Cup or World Cup 2019 in Google Search or the Google app will yield results on the day’s match along with its time and details of the following matches. The information is clearly presented in cards and split into three sections namely, Matches, News and Table.
The Matches section will show match timings and contending teams. The News tab will show curated articles and videos from sports websites, and the Table tab will display points, matches played, runs, wickets taken and all other in-depth information about each match. You can also see how the ten teams performed in warm-up matches through Google’s world cup search tool.
Which TV channels will broadcast ICC World Cup 2019 in India? In India, World Cup 2019 will be telecast on Star Sports 1 Bangla, Star Sports 1 Marathi, Asianet Plus SD (For 9 India + Semis + Final), Star Sports Select 1, and Star Sports Select 1 HD.

Death Stranding release date set for November 8, new trailer reveals characters, cast, gameplay
A new trailer for the upcoming Hideo Kojima game, Death Stranding hit the internet last evening and we still don't know what the game is about. The nearly 10-minute long trailer gives us a good look at the characters in the game, gameplay elements, the cast of the game and above all, the release date. The game will hit the PS4 on November 8, as promised by Kojima. He said that the game would launch before the 2020 Olympics and even though we thought the game would be a launch title for the PS5, we were wrong. The gaming legend has lived up to his promise and we will get the game before the year's ends.
Before we give you our insights on the trailer you can enjoy it below.
The Death Stranding trailer begins with a shot of Cliff portrayed by none other than Hannibal Lecter himself - Mads Mikkelsen. The trailer then goes on to show us the protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus, who is talking to the President of the United States. She gives him a mission to unite the country once again and then we see some gameplay and UI elements along with an understanding of the dead or rather undead characters in the game. The undead characters you encounter in the game are called BT’s and the baby shown in the game is used as a bridge between our world and theirs.
It looks like once the BT’s get a hold of you, they take you to a world where pain and suffering is constant in the form of war. This is the one place where we see Sam in action with a gun. Until then it looks like combat in the real world will be limited to hand-to-hand combat. Sam also has a futuristic bike he can use to traverse the environment. We also get a glimpse of the rain in the game called Time Fall. Getting exposed to the rain leads to rapid ageing, a feature we have seen in previous trailers. The trailer ends with Cliff telling us that we can go anywhere, even the moon. Does this mean we will take a trip to outer space in the game?
Despite having so many new details about the game, we still don't know what the game is actually about and that is the beauty of it. Hideo Kojima has shown us so much of the game yet held back the strands that join the dots. This cat and mouse game has undoubtedly added to the hype about Death Stranding. Another thing to note is the similarities in gameplay to Metal Gear Solid V. From the melee combat to the gunplay and even the alert sound when the enemies spot you all is very reminiscent of the Metal Gear Solid V. We honestly can’t wait to get our hands on this game later this year.
For those interested the game is already up for pre-order. You’ll have the option to choose between the Standard Edition, Special Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition and Collector’s Edition – all of which include the full game and bonus incentives for pre-ordering. Those that pre-order the Standard Edition for Rs 3,999 get a voucher to download a Chibi Ludens PSN Avatar plus, a Death Stranding PS4 Dynamic Theme at launch.
Pre-orders also receive special gold versions of in-game items earned through gameplay including Gold “Sam” Sunglasses, Gold Hat, Gold Speed Skeleton (Increase the speed of Sam’s movement when equipped) and Gold Armor Plate (Increase protection against any damage Sam takes).
It isn’t clear whether The Special Edition of the game is coming to India. However, it includes a collectable Steelbook case. Those that pre-order The Special Edition receive all incentives offered through the Standard Edition. The Special Edition also includes a special gold version of the Gold “Ludens Mask” Sunglasses earned through gameplay. It includes digital bonuses as well including Death Stranding: Timefall (Original Music from the World of Death Stranding), Music Album Digital Download and Behind the Scenes Making Of Digital Video.
You can read more about the game on the official blog here.

Amazon Echo Show 5 with 55-inch display, physical privacy camera shutter launched at Rs 8,999
Amazon recently launched its Echo Show device in India, which features a 10-inch HD display and is priced at Rs 22,999. Now, the company has introduced a smaller, less powerful and less expensive version of it as the Amazon Echo Show 5. The new Echo Show 5 is priced at Rs 8,999 and it features a 5.5-inch touch enabled display that sports a 960 x 480p resolution. The device is aimed at not only enabling users to interact with Alexa using voice commands, but also to let them make use of the screen for entertainment, video calling and other visual tasks. Echo Show 5 comes in Black and White colour options, and is currently up for pre-order via Amazon.in, with shipping slated to commence in July. It joins the Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Spot, Echo Input, Echo Plus, and Echo Show in Amazon’s Echo range of devices in India.
While the Echo Show (First Impressions) sports two 10W drivers with a passive radiator, the new device features a 1.65-inch speaker. The Echo Show 5 sports a 1MP camera on the front and those who get the device will be able to place video calls to those who have an Echo Spot, Echo Show, the Alexa smartphone App, or Skype. Alongside a microphone/camera off button, the Echo Show 5 also comes equipped with a physical camera shutter aimed at providing a sense of privacy to users. Additionally, Amazon recently announced that the Alexa Announcements feature is available for all Amazon Echo devices and the new Echo Show 5 gets it as well.
“Customers love the screen complementing Alexa on the Echo Show. The Echo Show 5 now makes it easier and more affordable to have a smart display in every home. The new form factor is perfect for a bedside table, living room side table or desk, plus it has a camera shutter for added peace of mind, and new Alexa privacy features for even more control,” says Parag Gupta, Head of Amazon Devices, India.
The display on the Echo Show and the Echo Show 5 can be used to enable clock faces, add personal photos, play slideshow of images, follow recipes, watch videos on Amazon Prime Video and more. Amazon says a new Alexa Privacy Hub will soon be made available, which will be a “single source of information on how Echo devices are designed as well as the controls you have over your Alexa experience”. All Alexa enabled devices will also get a new skill, which will enable users to delete their voice recording by saying “Alexa, delete what I just said” or “Alexa, delete everything I said today”.

Dell Alienware m15 first impressions: refreshed so soon
For Dell, Computex 2019 was its biggest set of announcements in many years. Typically, the company makes its biggest reveals at CES in Las Vegas, but Computex 2019 saw some pretty exciting announcements as well. One of these announcements is the new Alienware m15 and the Alienware m17, both of which now carry the designation R2.
The most striking change to the new m15 and m17 laptop happens to be its upgrade to the Legend design. Alienware had debuted their new industrial design nicknamed Legend at CES 2019, with the Area 51m being the first machine to sport it. CES 2019 was also when the company launched the new m15 and m17 laptop, the company’s smallest and lightest gaming laptops in their respective sizes. We reviewed the m15 and for the most part, recommended, save for some heating issues.
The Alienware m15 R2 with its Legend design comes with honeycomb cutouts for improved airflow
At the launch, we caught up with Joe Olmsted, Director Gaming Products, Alienware and asked him why Alienware would release a redesigned m15 so quickly. To this, he said that Alienware wanted to introduce the new Legend Design and for that, the Area 51m was the perfect candidate. It is understandable that the company would want something iconic looking in the market to go with a stand-out machine. On being asked if this would upset buyers, he assured that Alienware would maintain both the Alienware m15 R1 and R2 in the market. When asked why anyone would want to go with the R1 over the R2, he said “well, for one, it’ll be cheaper,” further adding that the m15 R1 supports up to 32GB RAM with SODIMM slots while the m15 R2 supports a maximum of 16GB RAM that is soldered onto the board.
While the R1 will also get an update to Intel’s 9th generation Core processors, the real differentiator between the two generations really is the design. But it isn’t just a cosmetic thing. Measuring a little under 20mm at its thickest, the Alienware m15 R2 also features a completely redesigned keyboard. Olmstead reveals that Alienware designed the keys and switches from the ground-up, emulating the curve of desktop mechanical keys on the laptop. While definitely not a mechanical keyboard like experience, the new keys do feel al whole lot better to type on than those on the m15 R1. Lastly, Olmstead says the cooling on the m15 R2 has been improved, to allow for 10-30 percent better airflow.
The all-new keyboard on the Alienware m15 R2 offers an excellent typing experience
New Alienware HeadsetsThe new Alienware m15 and m17 R2 laptops were also joined by two new Alienware branded headsets, the Alienware AW510H and the Alienware AW310H. The former is a 7.1 surround sound headset while the latter is a stereo sound headset. At the event, Wee Kee Yeo, Vice President and General Manager Client Peripherals was nice enough to answer a few questions. He highlighted the sheer amount of attention to detail Alienware put into creating the two new headsets, saying that the 50mm drivers were very specifically tuned for gaming. Additionally, the choice of materials for the inner cup along with the diameter of the cup itself was very carefully chosen to meet the expectations of delivering pin-point accuracy for gamers. He also reassured us that both the headsets have undergone extensive testing, especially with regards to their durability. The headsets are tested for stretching of the headband from prolonged use, as the company doesn’t want the headset to get loose over prolonged usage.
First ImpressionsThe new Alienware m15 R2 is definitely a striking redesign. The upgrade to the Legend theme is definitely working in the new machine’s favour, making it look slimmer than it actually is. The new honeycomb cutouts that are a part of the Legend design also aid in better airflow simply by virtue of being there, but the bigger fans on the inside are expected to definitely help with thermals. The two new headsets that debut at under $100 are also promising devices, especially at the price point they’ve been launched. Dell is yet to give any official word on when the new Alienware portfolio will come to India.

Apple steps closer to foldable future with latest patent grant
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent for a foldable screen that could be used on iPhones and other devices. According to Patently Apple, the patent is for an electronic device with a display and cover that are flexible or bendable. The flexible cover layer may be formed from materials like glass, strengthened glass, sapphire or zirconia to provide protection to the flexible display from potential damage. This layer may also provide structural support for the display.
The latest patent differs from the one that was granted to Apple earlier this year. Two parts hinged together with a foldable panel fixed on top were depicted in that patent. The new patent shows a foldable phone that wraps around the outside of the device. It should be noted that companies, including Apple, often patent ideas that never get transformed into a product or a service. It could also be that Apple is experimenting with different designs to get one right for foldable iPhones to come. Reports of bendable iPhones have been doing the rounds since 2016 and Apple has been rumoured to be in talks with Samsung, LG and BOE for foldable displays in the past. So the Apple wagon is certainly moving towards some form of foldable device in the future.
While Samsung and Huawei picked up on the foldable phone trend this year, Apple still finds itself on the other side of the fence. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, however, is on a sticky wicket after several reviewers reported issues with the display and Samsung delayed the launch of the phone. Huawei is yet to launch its Mate X foldable device which is slated for a July debut. Samsung's bendable flagship could arrive alongside the Mate X in July unless the company hits any further hardware snags.
Talking about Apple's stake in the market, Daniel Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, told CNN Business., "They're [Apple] well behind Samsung when it comes to foldable phones. But one advantage is that Samsung's Galaxy Fold has had technical issues as well as expensive pricing.”
Apple has also filed patents for a flexible display with touch sensors and portions, as well as a flexible iPhone that can fold in half and grip a person's clothes. It has been reported that the Cupertino-based company will launch a foldable phone in 2020. “Foldable phones and 5G represent the next generation of smartphones in the coming years,” Ives added. Maybe Apple will have that chunk of the pie after all.
