15-year-old stabs brother to death for not letting him play PUBG Mobile
A 15-year-old boy from Thane, Mumbai allegedly killed his elder brother who was scolding him for playing PUBG Mobile, the police have said. 19-year-old victim Mohammad Shaikh has asked his younger brother to stop playing PUBG Mobile on his phone and this allegedly resulted in the boy flying into a fit of rage.
PTI reports, quoting senior police inspector Mamata D’Souza, that the minor allegedly banged Shaikh’s head against the wall and then repeatedly stabbed him with a pair of scissors after being repremanded for playing PUBG Mobile.
Shaikh was taken to a government hospital after the incident occurred but he had succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival.
A case has been registered by the police under section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
PUBG Mobile has been associated with several violent incidents in the past, resulting in murders and even suicides. The battle royale game is hugely popular in India and has been considered to have a negative impact on children. However, it is important to consider that just like any other game, this one too should be played in moderation.

Google reduced ability of device manufacturers to use Android alternatives: Competition Commission of India
Google has been accused of imposing “unfair conditions” on device manufacturers and abusing the popularity of its Android platform by the competition watchdog in India. It was earlier reported that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation into Google’s anti-competitive practices in India, but the details of that directive were not disclosed at the time.
Now, a Reuters exclusive bares those details after conducting a review of CCI’s 14-page order. The said order reveals that the CCI found Google imposing “unfair conditions” on device manufacturers. It says that by making pre-installation of Google apps conditional, the company has, “reduced the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operated on alternate versions of Android,” thereby flouting India’s competition laws. “It amounts to prima facie leveraging of Google’s dominance,” CCI said in the order.
Last week, it was reported that CCI is scanning Google’s agreements with OEMs and the conditions which the company places in those agreements. The CCI is said to have handed letters to several OEMs asking about their relationship with Google.
The investigation unit of CCI is expected to complete the probe into Google’s activities within 150 days of the April 14 order by CCI. However, as happens in cases like these, the matter could be dragged out for longer.
In a similar case last year, Google was fined $5 billion by the EU antitrust regulators for abusing the dominance of its Android platform.
According to Reuters, the complainants in the India case allege that Google engaged in similar anti-competitive practices in India “with the aim of cementing Google’s dominant position”.
Last year, a fine of $20 million was imposed on Google by the CCI for Search bias and abusing its dominant position. Google’s appeal against the fine is still pending.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G launching in December, Mate X to be announced in September
Things have been slightly uncertain for the Chinese smartphone and telecom equipment maker Huawei ever since it was put on the US Entity List. The company can no longer use Android on its yet to be registered phones and is currently serving a 90 day grace period to deliver updates and patches to its existing handsets. However, it seems to be positive about the current situation getting better as it has confirmed the timeline for the launch of its upcoming handsets. In a 5G conference in Russia, Huawei confirmed that it will launch the 5G variant of its upcoming Huawei Mate 30 handset in December.
It’s now confirmed and hardly surprising that there’s a 5G version of the Huawei Mate 30. However, the timeline company has shared is most likely to apply for the Russia launch of the handset. If Huawei sticks to its usual timeline, we can expect the standard Huawei Mate 30 to launch sometime in November. In addition to the possible launch month of the Huawei Mate 30, the smartphone manufacturer has also announced that its foldable Mate X handset will be launched in September. It seems like the company is taking its time to bring its first foldable phone to the market and we can’t blame them after what happened with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.
Speaking of the Huawei Mate 30, there are some rumours about the handset making the rounds of the internet. The upcoming handset’s design was recently leaked in a concept render, and a media report suggested that its display might have a 90Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the Pro version of the phone was spotted on TENAA in 6GB and 12GB RAM variants. Renders of the phone hint at a rounded rectangle camera module that houses four sensors and an LED flash. While the specifics are yet to be revealed, the handset’s camera is said to support 5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom, similar to the P30 Pro.

Nokia 2 will not get the Android 9 Pie update
While Nokia has been pushing the Android 9 Pie update to most of its devices, it looks like there is at least one device that will not be getting the update, and that is the Nokia 2. Launched back in 2017, the company promised at least two years worth of updates. However, it looks like that’s not happening. According to a post by an admin on the Nokia community forums, the device will not be getting the new update, or any other subsequent update for that matter.
The thread was started by one user who was chatting to a company support representative, who said that the team was working on bringing the update to users. This understandably got users quite excited. However, community admin, Laura, had to step in and quash the rumours stating, “From our internal testing, the Nokia 2 is not able to offer complete end user satisfaction with the later OS Upgrades. As a result, we will not be offering Android 9 Pie (or any subsequent Android Upgrades) to Nokia 2.”
The Nokia 2 isn’t a powerhouse of a phone to begin with. The device was launched in late 2017 with Android 7.1 Nougat running out of the box. The budget smartphone is powered by a 28-nanometre Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset with 1GB of RAM. It features a 5-inch 16:9 display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Photography is taken care of by a single 8-megapixel camera with autofocus on the back and a single 5-megapixel selfie shooter in the front. It also packs a 4,100mAh battery, which Nokia claims can power the phone for two days on a single charge.
The company did announce the Android 8 Oreo update for the phone back in March this year. However, the Nokia warned its users that the update may result in performance issues. It further added that some applications may not be supported.

Xiaomi inviting users to test Android Pie update for Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Android Q for Poco F1
Back in April, Xiaomi announced that it is dropping software support for its Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and the Redmi S2 (Redmi Y2) smartphones. The news must’ve let down many customers since the three phones were launched last year in India. However, the company later clarified that the Redmi Y2 will receive the Android Pie update and it seems to have changed its plans again to bring the same update for the Redmi 6A and the Redmi 6 handsets. Xiaomi is inviting MIUI testers for the Android Pie global stable ROM for the two phones. As per a blog on the Mi forums, it will perfect the ROM to release it soon for the public, once it is done with testing.
In addition to the Redmi 6A and the Redmi 6, Xiaomi is also inviting users to test out the Android Q global ROM update for Poco F1. This means that the Android Q update is almost ready for Poco F1 users. In case one is interested to test out the aforementioned global builds on their handsets, they can apply to receive the update here. However, there are some requirements to be eligible for receiving the update. While the offer is open for users in all regions, the communication language needs to be English and QQ must be used as the communication tool. The users also need to ensure that their device has an unlocked bootloader and has the latest MIUI Global Stable ROM installed. In addition, the new version is unstable so the user needs to back up their data and install it using the Mi flash tool.
It is slightly reassuring that Xiaomi is not dropping software support for its phones out-of-the-blue. Previously, an admin, on MIUI forum, said that the Android 9 Pie update for Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and the Redmi S2 have been suspended. There was no detailed information as to what the reason was. However, since the company is rolling out updates, users of these phones don’t seem to have any reason to worry.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Pro may be called Galaxy Note 10+, images leaked
For a while now, reports suggested that the larger variant of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 10 smartphone will be called the Galaxy Note 10 Pro. However, recently leaked images suggest that the phone will in fact be called the Galaxy Note 10+. This makes a lot more sense considering the fact that Samsung designates the ‘+’ moniker to its larger devices. The most recent example being the Samsung Galaxy S10+.
The images were posted by YouTuber, TechTalkTV posted the images online. The images suggest that Samsung will stick with the ‘Infinity-O’ punch-hole design introduced with the Galaxy S series. However, the front camera has been moved to a more central position, instead of a corner. At the back, the device is shown to sport a triple-rear camera setup, with the three sensors stacked vertically. This is the same design that was suggested by case renders for the device, which popped up online a few weeks back.
Reports suggest that the larger variant of the Galaxy Note 10 will feature a 6.8-inch display, as compared to the 6.4-inch display found on the standard version. Further, it is tipped to offer a minimum of 256GB of storage, and going all the way up to 1TB, while the standard Galaxy Note 10 is expected to offer at least 128GB storage. Reports also suggest that the phones may ship with a 25W fast charger. There are also unsavoury rumors that Samsung may finally ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack with the Galaxy Note 10 series. While the South Korean company hasn’t finalised the launch date for the new Note series of devices, reports suggest that the company may launch the device on August 7, in New York.

Samsung could announce outward folding phone ahead of Huawei Mate X September launch
Samsung is expected to launch a range of foldable smartphones, including an outward folding one, ahead of the Huawei Mate X, a Korean publication has claimed. Citing sources familiar with the matter, The Investor reported that the production of this particular device has already begun. “The launch date has yet to be unveiled, but it’s likely to be earlier than the date set for Huawei. Samsung has already begun producing the outward folding phone,” the sources was quoted as saying. It should be noted that the South Korean company is yet to announce the re-launch date of its first folding phone, the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
In contrast, Huawei has already announced that the Mate X will be launched in September. This leaves a short period of two months - July and August - for Samsung to hold a launch event. If Samsung launches the Galaxy Fold next month, the company will only have August to unveil the new foldable device. Further, It has already been reported that Samsung is likely to launch the Galaxy Note 10 Series of phones in August. So it might be possible that the company may uncover the phone that folds outwards along with the Note flagship.
Kim Seong-cheol, Vice President, Samsung Display recently said that the company has resolved “most” of the issues related to the Galaxy Fold phone, and that the device is ready to hit the market. Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is the main supplier of the folding screen. The Galaxy Fold was initially scheduled to hit the shelves in April in the US and in May in Korea. However, it didn't happen because a number of reviewers in the US reported several display-related issues in the phone.
Meanwhile, Vincent Peng, Senior Vice President, Huawei said that the company is doing extensive tests on the device and this could be the main reason for the company to delay the Mate X launch to September. In addition to that, the recent Huawei fiasco with the US government is already fuelling the speculation of hiccups in the launch of the phone. The Huawei Mate X was announced alongside the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Google Maps Getting Public Transit Crowdedness Predictions, Expands Live Traffic Delays for Buses
from RSS Feeds : RSS Feed - NDTV Gadgets360.com https://ift.tt/2REHY6V
Google Maps will now predict how crowded your next bus, train or subway ride could be
Google Maps app was recently updated for Indian users with a slew of new features aimed at people who frequently use public transit. One of the features was displaying bus travel times based on live traffic conditions and predicting how buses on a route could be delayed. The option was first rolled out in India and now the company is expanding the option to other countries around the globe. In addition, Google is also adding new ‘crowdedness predictions’ to its Maps app and as the name suggests, the option will predict how crowded the bus, train or subway might be, based on your past rides. The two new features are now rolling out for Google Maps users on Android and iOS in about 200 cities worldwide.
The feature that predicts delays in bus travel times is based on Google’s live traffic data and public bus schedules in India. However, in areas where Google doesn’t have access to real-time information from local transit agencies, the option will work based on the live traffic conditions along the bus route. The feature will also show where the delays are on the map route so that users get a better idea of when their bus could arrive. As for the new crowdedness prediction, the feature will predict how crowded your upcoming bus, train or subway ride could be, based on your previous rides. The update will be in real-time as well so that one can decide whether to get on the transit or wait for the next ride.
As mentioned earlier, Google announced some new features for people who prefer to use the public mode of transportation in India. Alongside live delay information for buses, which we explained above, users in India can now see real-time train information for long-distance trains and mixed-mode commuting suggestions. The former option enables one to figure out when a train is arriving and see live train status as well. As for the latter feature, Google Maps for Android can now notify users of directions in mixed mode for journeys that combine auto-rickshaw rides and public transport.

PlayStation 5 benchmark leak suggests its 4x more powerful than PS4, at par with NVIDIA RTX 2070 GPU
New information about the PlayStation 5 has surfaced and this time, it is in the form of a benchmark leak. The information was leaked by TUM_APISAK on Twitter. Since this is a leak, we suggest you take it with a hint of salt. TUM_APISAK tweets, “The score is hidden. I only see the overall score. PS4 - Rough score 5000. Gonzalo - score 20000 up”. Gonzalo is the codename for the next generation PlayStation. To be clear, the 4x graphical jump is when compared to the PS4 and not the PS4 Pro. The score of 20000 plus puts the PS5’s capabilities around the capabilities of the RTX 2070 from NVIDIA. The benchmark in question here appears to be the 3DMark Fire Strike. Although the leakster has said that the details of the benchmark were not visible, only the final score.
We are nearly a year away from the launch of the PS5 and the next Xbox. Microsoft took the stage at E3 2019 and shed very little light on the upcoming console. Sony, skipped E3 2019 for the first time in the history of E3. However, the company has already confirmed some specs of the PS5 including the AMD Zen2 and Navi GPU, SSD and Ray Tracing capabilities. The specs revealed of the PS5 are similar to what Microsoft announced with the Xbox Scarlett at E3 2019. You can check out our comparison off the known specs of the two consoles here.
With the architecture of the two consoles being homogenous to each other, Sony and Microsoft will have to play the “exclusive” game to grab attention. Sony has had a stellar line off exclusive games with the PS4, something Microsoft lacked this generation. Microsoft has acquired a considerable number of studios over the past year to help build a portfolio of exclusive games.
The next generation of consoles is expected to launch in the holiday season 2020.

Honor 20 Series smartphones confirmed to receive Android Q update
With the official Android Q announcement from Google is around the corner, Honor has stepped up to announce that the Honor 20 Series smartphones will receive the next major version of the popular operating system when it becomes available. The models eligible for the Android Q update include the Honor 20, Honor 20i, and Honor 20 Pro. The Chinese smartphone brand made the announcement in the form of a message of commitment to its patrons on Twitter yesterday.
“All HONOR smartphones and tablets will continue to receive security patches and Android updates. Anyone who has already bought, or is about to buy an HONOR smartphone can continue to access the world of apps as they have always done. All devices continue to be covered by our manufacturer’s warranty and will receive full service support accordingly,” writes Honor in its message on Twitter.
Honor’s message of commitment to consumers comes at a time when Huawei, its parent company, has been put on the US trade blacklist along with 140 other Chinese entities. Huawei is currently charged with bank fraud, violation of Iran sanctions, theft of trade secrets and espionage in the US, causing technology companies like Google and Qualcomm to cease all business plans with the company. It has even prompted the Indian government to build its own "Sarkari" WhatsApp for official communication.
Though we know now that the Honor 20 Series will get Android Q when it becomes available, we still can’t be sure about other Honor models. When Honor was asked whether the Honor Play would be eligible for the big update, the company replied tactfully, “Honor is continuously working to introduce new technology to provide the best functionality and features to its customers. Further, we have taken your valuable feedback regarding Android Q update for Honor Play users."
Our commitment to our fans. More information to follow. pic.twitter.com/qXVp1CcdiF

Striking Distance is PUBG Corporations new game studio working on a narrative-led PUBG game
PUBG players might be in for a treat as the game’s developer has announced a new gaming studio that is working on creating an original narrative experience within the PUBG universe. What this means is that there is a new story mode in the works, set in the PUBG universe. While the story mode is confirmed, it is yet to be known whether the it will be introduced within PUBG or if it will be a new PUBG game altogether. The entire project is being led by PUBG Corporation’s new game development studio called Striking Distance, which is headed by Glen Schofield as the CEO.
Schofield is a veteran in the game development industry with over 28 years of experience. He worked on the development of third person horror shooter Dead Space and was the general manager and co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, which is the gaming studio known for making Call of Duty titles. “Throughout my career, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to make some remarkable games that tell incredible stories, and each of them has meant something special to me,” says Schofield. “But now, those learnings will help me build a AAA team that can explore new designs and concepts at Striking Distance. As a creative, the freedom to explore the PUBG universe has me excited about the possibilities, which I view as beyond the battle royale genre.”
The new gaming studio is building a new team from scratch to work on the upcoming PUBG project and it is looking to hire some talent too. Right now, there’s no more information on what Striking Distance will be working on, how the project will be directed and when the new narrative experience is expected to release. However, Schofield confirmed in a tweet that the project is not a sequel to PUBG but an original narrative in the PUBG universe.
The only thing I can say now is that I’m not working on a sequel to PUBG, but an original narrative in the PUBG universe.

Humongous returning asteroid to pass by Earth today
It’s not every day that we get to witness a huge cosmic object fly by our planet, especially an object this large. Named 2008 KV2, the object in question is an asteroid that’s reported by Space.com to be three times the length of a football field. The asteroid is expected to swing by at a distance of about 6.7 million kilometres from our planet today. Even though its distance from our planet is great, one should be able to observe 2008 KV2’s flyby using the right scientific equipment.
For those of you worried that 6.7 million kilometres may be too close for comfort, here’s some perspective. The moon is approximately 3,84,400 kilometres away from us. In comparison, the asteroid is about 17 times farther than that. So there’s little need to worry about a head-on collision with the flying leviathan. 2008 KV2 is expected to be flying with 0.05 astronomical units of Earth. In other words, the big rock is expected to be doing around 40,800 kilometres per hour when it passes us by.
As you probably have worked it out by now, our cosmic guest was first discovered by scientists in 2008. Since 2008 KV2 is orbiting the sun as well, it’s expected to make another pass in 2021 and two more in 2022. Although the rock is travelling millions of kilometres away from us, it’s labelled as a “potentially hazardous asteroid” by NASA. This is mostly because of its size and distance from us. After all, 2008 KV2 is classified by experts as a Near Earth Object (NEO).
According to a report by Interesting Engineering, asteroids have been talked about a lot at NASA of late. Another huge asteroid that’s expected to swing by our planet later is Apophis. But that won’t happen till April 13, 2029. “We already know that the close encounter with Earth will change Apophis' orbit, but our models also show the close approach could change the way this asteroid spins, and it is possible that there will be some surface changes, like small avalanches,” Davide Farnocchia, an astronomer at JPL's Center for Near Earth Objects Studies (CNEOS), was quoted as saying.

OnePlus 7 Series Closed Beta Program launched, company is hiring 250 testers
OnePlus is on a hunt for closed beta testers for its newly-launched OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 smartphones. The company has now opened the programme, and is inviting applications for the same. This will be the first time that the Chinese tech company will be shortlisting 250 people for its Closed Beta Program. Through the Closed Beta Program, the OnePlus works to improve its products on the basis of feedback given by users. OnePlus says that the programme also helps it refine or revise its product strategy as well.
While this may sound like a very good opportunity for those who are interested, it is not easy to become a closed beta tester. The first thing that is considered is the eligibility. In order to be eligible, a person has to meet certain requirements. Firstly, he/she should be a OnePlus 7 series device users. Secondly, he/she should be an active OnePlus Community member, and thirdly, the person should be willing to constantly communicate and provide feedback to the OnePlus team on Slack. If you meet these requirements, you can apply here.
The second step is committing to the company. The closed beta testing team is the closest group to OnePlus' staff. This group is made up of a crew of OnePlus community members. Due to this, this group needs absolute secrecy, as testers will often get builds and features weeks or even months before they are released to the public. Hence, those chosen will be required to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) with OnePlus to be part of this programme.
If you aren’t already aware, certain companies, including OnePlus, test features of their products before they are released to the masses. To help accomplish this goal, OnePlus runs the development of the OxygenOS in three different “streams”: Closed Beta, Open Beta, and Official Release. Closed Beta (called Alpha Builds) is the place where the coding of a feature begins. The feature is very unstable and the team associated with it tests new (and sometimes experimental) code and features. The big goal here is to get initial feedback on new ideas.
The second step is the roll out of Open Beta, which is often called Community Builds. This beta is available to a much larger chunk of people than the closed beta. These testers then test the features developed by the Closed Beta team and give their feedback. The feature is then tweaked so that a polished version can be churned out of it. The last stage is the roll out of the feature which is released to the masses.

Huawei US ban prompts Indian Government to build its own Sarkari WhatsApp for official communications
Government of India is reportedly planning to build its own WhatsApp-like chat platform to facilitate secure communications for government agencies citing overdependence on American technology companies. Economic Times reports that the need for the said platform was felt by officials in the Indian government after US companies cut ties with Huawei, following sanctions placed on the company by the US Department of Commerce. The government wants to cut out the middlemen and setup a secure communication channel over indigenously developed networks.
“There are strong discussions that for strategic and security reasons, over a period of time, we should have email, messaging…all sorts of systems, at least for government communication, which doesn’t depend on outside players,” a senior government official told ET on conditions of anonymity. “We should have some form of a sarkari WhatsApp,” the official added.
To keep interactions on its chat platform safe, the government is in discussions to have all the data generated by the platform stored in data centres located within India.
As mentioned before, the Indian government's plans to develop an internal and independent communications network comes after the United States imposed restrictions on US companies from doing business with Huawei. The Chinese company has been charged with bank fraud, violation of Iran sanctions, theft of trade secrets and espionage in the US, because of which companies like Google, Qualcomm and others had to halt business with it.
Sale of Huawei’s 5G telecom equipment is also barred in the US and the country is reportedly pressurising the Indian government to ban Huawei from selling 5G infrastructure in India. While India has not yet taken a call on this, Huawei is currently seeking the government’s approval to conduct fresh 5G trials in India. The Chinese firm has also offered India a "no back door" agreement.
“Look what happened to Huawei, their Honor (branded) phones. It was unthinkable, but now it has definitely rung alarm bells with us. Tomorrow, if the US finds us unreliable for some reason, all they need to do is ask their companies to slow down networks in India and everything here will come to a standstill. We are vulnerable and we must take steps to cover that,” the official told ET.
Further, the government wants officials to stop using platforms like WhatsApp or Gmail in light of American companies resisting India’s data localisation efforts.

Oppo Reno 5G launched at MWC Shanghai
Oppo has become the latest Chinese smartphone-maker to foray into the 5G space. After launching the 4G versions of the Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom in China, Europe and India, the company has unveiled the 5G variant of the flagship model. Apart from the latest and fastest mobile network support, the specs of the Oppo Reno 5G remain the same. Unfortunately, the phone will not make it to India anytime soon because the country does not have the necessary 5G infrastructure in place yet.
Oppo Reno 5G Specifications:As mentioned, the 5G variant of the Oppo Reno sports the same hardware as the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom (Review). The phone sports a Full HD+ 6.65-inch AMOLED display that offers 2340 x 1080 pixels resolution. Thanks to the shark-fin type pop-up camera, the phone is claimed to deliver a 93.1 percent screen-to-body ratio. The flagship has a Gorilla Glass 6 protection, and it sports a sixth-generation in-screen fingerprint sensor. On the back, the Oppo Reno 5G has a glass finish and there is "5G" branding above the camera.
The phone has the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and a 5G modem at the heart. It offers up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card. The phone houses the same 4,065mAh battery as it is in the 4G variant. This comes as a surprise because there’s a general notion that 5G sips up more battery than the 4G networks. The phone ships with VOOC 3.0 fast charging support.
When it comes to gaming, Oppo has included Game Boost 2.0 acceleration engine and Dolby Atmos support for an optimised gaming experience. The phone has HyperBoost 2.0, which includes GameBoost, SystemBoost, and AppBoost. Oppo says that this technology brings performance improvements in terms of game experience, system speed and APP opening speed, respectively.
The phone features copper tube liquid cooling tech for heat dissipation and keep the temperature of the phone under control. Oppo says that the tech includes a combination of Thermal Gel, a Graphite Sheet, Copper Pipe Liquid Cooling, and a Tri-cooling Control to manage the temperature of the smartphone. It runs Android 9 Pie-based ColorOS 6 and has an AI-powered Breeno virtual assistant.
In terms of optics (Camera Review), the Oppo 5G features a triple camera setup on the back. The three sensors include a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and OIS, an 8MP secondary sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a periscope telescopic lens complemented with a 13MP sensor. The triple camera setup is coupled with dual-LED flash and laser autofocus tech. On the front, the phone is equipped with a 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, and an LED flash.

Google Maps gets Stay Safer feature in India enabling route deviation alerts and live location sharing for Android users
Google has rolled out a new feature for Google Maps users in India. The safety feature is aimed at users travelling in auto-rickshaws and taxis. Called ‘Stay Safer’, the new Google Maps feature will alert and notify users when their taxis or auto-rickshaws go off-route. The feature will also allow Google Maps users to share their live location status with their friends and families, something WhatsApp already enables on its platform. Google says that users in India will be able to use the new ‘Stay Safer’ feature on their Android phones with the latest version of Google Maps.
To find the feature, users need to select the ‘Stay Safer’ and ‘Get off-route alerts’ options after searching for their destination and getting directions on Google Maps. If the driver of the vehicle deviates 0.5KM from the Google Maps suggested route, users will feel their phones buzz and get a prominent notification, tapping which will reveal where the user is compared to the original route.
Live trip status can also be shared with friends of family members directly through the screen.
Announcing the feature, Amanda Bishop, Product Manager, Google Maps said, “Through our extensive research across India, we found that a lot of people limit their mobility due to safety-related concerns. To address this, we are launching another India-first feature that will deliver a more relevant and reliable experience to our users. Our new ‘Stay Safer’ feature on Google Maps will alert users who are traveling in taxis, auto-rickshaws etc. in case their vehicle goes off route, giving them peace of mind. At Google Maps, we are committed to helping make journeys safe and hassle-free and look forward to bringing more experiences like this to India and beyond.”

Vivo iQOO 5G phone and Super FlashCharge 120W tech announced at MWC Shanghai
Digit is at MWC Shanghai, which has kicked off today with some major new announcements from Vivo. The company showed off some new products like a pair of Vivo AR Glasses with Jovi digital assistant, the 5G variant of its iQOO smartphone and the 120W SuperFlash Charge tech. The 5G model of the Vivo iQOO sports a design similar to the regular iQOO handset and it is being demoed as a prototype, with an offical launch expected in Q3 2019. The handset is powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is paired with an external Qualcomm X50 modem to enable 5G connectivity.
In addition to the smartphone, Vivo demoed its new fast-charging technology, which is officially called Vivo Super FlashCharge 120W. As the name suggests, the new tech can charge a phone at 120 watts, 6A at over 20V. The company claims that it can fully top up a 4000mAh battery in under 13 minutes and top it to 50 percent in merely 5 minutes. The company had previously demoed the fast charging tech where the battery capacity of a device did reach 50 percent in 5 minutes. The tech inside the charging unit is similar to Warp charging tech that OnePlus employs.
Vivo is not the only company that is working on charging tech to top up smartphones faster. Back in March this year, Xiaomi showcased its 100W Super Charge technology in a video. A 4000mAh battery was seen being topped up to 100 percent in 17 minutes and Xiaomi compared its tech with Oppo’s 50W SuperVOOC charging. Xiaomi’s 100W Super Charge technology runs at 20V/5A, which is slightly lower than Vivo’s new Super FlashCharge. However, it won’t be surprising to see Oppo adapting to the new Vivo charging tech, along with OnePlus, since they are sister companies that are owned by BBK Electronics.

Asus 6z with Snapdragon 855 goes on sale starting today at Rs 31,999
Having received a rebranding and official launch, the Asus 6z smartphone is all set to go on sale in India starting today at noon on Flipkart. Sold by Asus as the “most affordable Snapdragon 855” smartphone, the Asus 6z is available in three variants: 6GB RAM + 64GB storage at Rs 31,999, 6GB RAM + 128GB storage at Rs 34,999, and 8GB RAM + 256GB storage at Rs 39,999. An additional mobile protection package will be available with it at Rs 99. “Grab it until stocks last!” writes Asus in an official news release.
The Asus 6z comes with flagship-grade specs in that the chipset powering it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with RAM and UFS 2.1 storage going all the way up to 8GB and 256GB respectively. The internal storage can further be expanded using a microSD card. The display on the Asus 6z is a 6.4-inch IPS LCD unit that is said to deliver a screen-to-body ratio of 92 percent. The battery on the Asus 6z is a large 5000mAh unit, which is capable of Quick Charge 4.0 using the bundled 18W charger. In comparison, the OnePlus 7 Pro features a 4000mAh battery, while the standard OnePlus 7 ships with 3700mAh battery.
Official Asus 6z Product Page
The camera setup on the Asus 6z is a feature worth noting as the phone does not have separate sensors for the front and back as most phones these days do. Instead, it employs a flipping mechanism for the rear cameras. When the camera app is used in selfie mode, the rear cameras will flip around using a top-mounted swiveling mechanism to face the user. The flipping module houses a 48-megapixel Sony IMX 586 sensor along with a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera with a 117-degree field of view. The primary sensor has an aperture of f/1.79 and supports phase-detection autofocus. The wide-angle sensor, on the other hand, employs a real-time distortion correction algorithm.
The Asus 6z also features dual speakers with dual amplifiers. The smartphone runs a custom ZenUI 6 interface that’s built on top of Android 9 Pie. The Asus 6z will be offered in two colour options: Twilight Silver and Midnight Black. The Asus 6z was originally called the Asus ZenFone 6z before Asus lost to Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd in a trademark dispute that eventually forced Asus to give up the trademarks “Zen” and “ZenFone” in the Indian smartphone market days before the official launch.

MediaTek Helio P65 processor with Arm G52-class GPU launched
With an aim to deliver “big performance,” “big cameras,” and “great gaming” Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek has launched the Helio P65 processor. The company says that chipset mixes big Arm core performance and a new Arm G52-class GPU that delivers up to 25 percent gaming faster performance versus competitors that use older generation cores. The P65 incorporates a pair of Arm Cortex-A75 CPUs operating up to 2GHz, and six Cortex-A55 processors. MediaTek says it has also separated the audio channels for voice commands and calls from media and games for better quality.
When it comes to the AI-performance, MediaTek claims that the Helio P65 chipset’s performance has been improved 2X compared to the previous generation mainstream Helio series. It also says that the processor offers up to 30 percent faster performance versus direct competitor SoCs in AI-camera tasks such as object recognition (Google Lens), Smart Photo Album, scene detection and segmentation with background removal, and single or dual camera Bokeh shots.
In the camera department, the MediaTek Helio P65 enables dual camera systems up to 16MP+16MP with flexibility for wide/tele lenses. “Alternatively, brands can go super-sized and use a single 48MP, 4-cell camera as a key differentiator. A new, secure ISP design means facial recognition actions such as smartphone unlocking are ultra-fast, highly accurate and add a new layer of security,” the company said.
The MediaTek Helio P65 includes hardware accelerators including a depth engine that enables “professional-grade” Depth of Field (Bokeh) effects, Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) technology. The RSC helps in mitigating warped (‘jello effect’) video when capturing ultra-fast action (up to 240fps) or panning shots. MediaTek claims that it has incorporated a Camera Control Unit (CCU) that enables Instant AE for fast focusing exposure adjustment when environmental lighting conditions change suddenly.
“We’ve created our most accurate GNSS & positioning engine ever. Its upgraded inertial navigation engine compensates when indoors, underground or driving through tunnels. With the ability to understand its orientation and direction, the P65 can be placed or held in any position – separating orientation from inertial readings when GNSS is unavailable,” the company added.

Xiaomi Mi Beard Trimmer with self-sharpening blades, IPX7 rating launched for Rs 1,199 in India
Popular for its smartphones and accessories, Chinese tech brand Xiaomi has now launched the Mi Beard Trimmer for Rs 1,199 in India. The trimmer is the latest addition to its lifestyle product portfolio in the country. The company highlights that the trimmer has rounded blades for skin-friendly performance, which apparently means that the rounded blade design avoids any cuts while the product is being used. Xiaomi also claims that the device is equipped with an advanced self-sharpening feature.
The Chinese tech giant says that the trimmer has 40 length settings with 0.5mm precision. It ships with two combs: one with 0.5mm to 10mm setting, and other with 10.5mm to 20mm setting. There is also a dial that lets users set the speed of the trimmer blades. Xiaomi claims that the blades can reach up to 6000 oscillations per min to deliver accurate cuts and shape of the beard. The trimmer supports 5V adapter and is equipped with an LED battery indicator.
When it comes to the battery, Xiaomi says that the trimmer can be fully charged in 2 hours and can deliver up to a run time of 90 minutes (1.5 hours) on a full charge. The company says that if you charge the trimmer for 5 minutes, you can get 10 minutes of run-time. In fact, the Mi Beard Trimmer can be used in two ways: Cordless or Corded. So when you are in a rush, you can simply plug it and use it.
Since its comes with an IPX7 rating, it can be washed easily. If you are a frequent traveller, Mi trimmer has another trick in its bag. It comes with a travel lock function which keeps the trimmer from getting switched on unintentionally. In the box, users will also get a travel pouch to prevent damage while travelling. The product is now available, and users can go to Mi.com to grab one.

Tesla Autopilot steers itself towards two new spells of criticism
Tesla Autopilot refers to the advanced driver-assistance system built by Tesla, Inc. for Tesla models, such as the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Generally a topic of public debate because of reported reliability issues in the past, Tesla Autopilot once again finds itself in hot water over two new spells of doubt and criticism. While autonomous systems defence company Regulus Cyber says Tesla’s popular feature is no good against its hacks, a study that was recently carried out suggests that Tesla misled its drivers with the “Autopilot” name.
Israeli autonomous systems defence company Regulus Cyber is best known for creating “spoofing” tests for sensors found in autonomous cars. These tests are essentially hacks written to “spoof” or trip up the self-driving system with sensor input-based attacks. In the company’s recent test, the Tesla Autopilot system of a Model 3 and Model S was “spoofed and hacked”. In its blog post on the matter, the company writes about the Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) system’s high dependence on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the Model 3, which makes it easy to be “spoofed”. The company also offers a webinar that talks about what can be done to prevent such hacks in the future.
Tesla responded to the company’s tests by writing, “Any product or service that uses the public GPS broadcast system can be affected by GPS spoofing, which is why this kind of attack is considered a federal crime. Even though this research doesn’t demonstrate any Tesla-specific vulnerabilities, that hasn’t stopped us from taking steps to introduce safeguards in the future which we believe will make our products more secure against these kinds of attacks.” Tesla believes Regulus Cyber’s GPS hacks have minimal effect on Tesla cars and do not pose a safety risk.
In what appears to be further erosion of the Tesla system’s reputation in the market, a study conducted jointly by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) suggests that the name used by Tesla for its driver-assistance system misled drivers. The name “Autopilot”, writes IIHS in its study, “signals to drivers that they can turn their thoughts and their eyes elsewhere”. The study involved asking over 2,000 drivers what the names of five Level 2 autonomous driving systems meant to them.

Apple releases first iOS 13 public beta: How to download
At this year’s WorldWide Developers Conference, Apple announced the next iteration of its mobile operating system, iOS 13. The Cupertino-based company has now released the first public beta of iOS 13 so that people can try out its features and provide feedback. The iOS 13 beta programme is aimed at making the next release of iOS better by letting users test-drive pre-release versions. Members of the Apple Beta Software Program can now enroll their devices to access the iOS 13 public beta and provide feedback directly to Apple using the Feedback Assistant app.
Before you dash and start installing the beta version, a word of caution. Firstly, beta software, including previews and seeds, refer to a version of software that is still under development. Therefore, users are advised to install the iOS 13 public beta on their secondary devices or take a backup of their primary device before updating to the beta programme.
If you attempt to install beta software in an unauthorised manner which violates Apple policy it could render a user’s device unusable.
How to install the iOS 13 Public BetaTo install the iOS 13 Public Beta, users first need to enroll in the iOS 13 Public Beta programme here. Once enrolled, members need to initiate the following steps:
Download the configuration profile from the download page. Download the configuration profile directly onto your iOS device and follow the installation instructions. On Mac or PC, you are required to save the file to the hard disk and email it to an account on your iPhone. Tap the configuration profile in the Mail and follow the installation instructions. Remember to connect the device to a power source and to a Wi-Fi network.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Download and Install. If you wish to let the update install overnight, tap Later and choose "Install Tonight or Remind Me Later". If you tap Install Tonight, connect your device to a power cord at night and your device will update automatically by morning.
Apple says that iOS 13 brings along performance improvements, a new swiping keyboard feature and privacy-centric options among other features. iPhones SE and above, as well as the iPod 7th gen will be able to run iOS 13. Apple claims that the Face ID on iOS 13 will work 30 percent faster than in previous version. It also said that app packages from the App Store would be up to 50 percent lighter and updates being 60 percent smaller.
iOS 13 will also bring the highly-anticipated system-wide Dark Mode. Apple showed off the News, Notes, Calendar and Photos apps that feature a dark theme. The motive of bringing the Dark Mode is to make the UI easy on the eyes as well as to extend the battery backup. iOS 13 will also revamp how apps are able to access a user’s location data. With iOS 13, a user will get to share their location data with an app “just once” so that the app is unable to access it repeatedly. Additionally, one can set background tracking alerts. It will enable users to know when an app is using location data after being granted permission.
