Truecaller covertly signed up users for its payments service, calls it a bug
Truecaller, the crowdsourced caller ID service that’s highly popular among Indians covertly signed up an unspecified number of users to its payments service without their explicit consent. Users in India took to social media to complain that they had been registered to the payments service without their consent. However, in a statement, Truecaller said the issue happened because of a bug in the software, and soon rolled out an app update to Android users in India fixing the issue.
The bug made the app covertly send an SMS to the user's bank to verify accounts under the phone number and created UPI address on their behalf. It’s standard procedure to create UPI addresses but usually, the action is initiated by the user and not automatically done by an app.
Truecalled acknowledged the issue and said it will be releasing a new update to fix the issue. Till then, users signed up for payments service will be deregistered automatically.
We have discovered a bug in the latest update of Truecaller that affected the payments feature, which automatically triggered a registration post updating to the version. This was a bug and we have discontinued this version of the app so no other users will be affected. We're sorry about this version not passing our quality standards. We've taken quick steps to fix the issue and already rolled out a fix in a new version. For the users already affected, the new version with the fix will be available shortly, however, in the meanwhile they can choose to manually deregister through the overflow menu in the app," Truecaller said in a statement.
The payments service by Truecaller was added to the app around two years back. Just like Google Pay, Phonepe and the likes, Truecaller also depends on the UPI payments platform to initiate transactions. UPI laws state that signing up users without their consent is illegal.
This is not the first time a company has covertly signed up users to a payments platform. Airtel, when it launched the Airtel Payments Bank, also onboarded users to its payments platform without their consent.

Facebook publishes first results of its brain-typing experiment
Facebook has published details of its brain-computer interface experiments, with some promising results. The system is a brain-reading computer developed by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco backed by Facebook Reality Labs. The paper was published in Nature Communications and details the team's success in reading brain impulses associated with certain words that the test subjects were about to utter.
There already exist brain-computer interfaces that people can use to type, but in order to do so, they need to spell out each letter individually on a virtual keyboard. The team at USCF demonstrated that their system could extract the answer to pre-determined questions based on the subject’s thoughts.
The experiment was performed on subjects who were on their way to epilepsy surgery and had invasive implants placed in various parts of their brain. Then the system was trained on the 24 pre-determined questions and its possible answers. Once the training was complete, the subjects would be presented with a question, to which, they would answer out aloud. The system would be able to detect their answers based on its training and lead author and UCSF neurosurgery professor Edward Chang said that the accuracy of the system was between 61 to 76 percent, far higher than the current 7 to 20 percent of existing such brain-computer interfaces.
While the study has promising results, it is far from what Facebook has been promising the world; a non-invasive brain-computer interface. The current paper is based on a system that requires highly invasive implants, and more importantly, is functional in a very limited environment where it has already been trained on all the questions and their potential answers. Lastly, the answers had to be spoken in order for the system to read the brain waves and deliver the result, which isn’t exactly “thinking and typing.”

Google researchers find six security bugs worth 5 million in iOS
Two members of Project Zero, Google’s bug-hunting team, have found six bugs in iOS that could have led cyber attackers to compromise devices like iPhones and iPads. The duo published the details and demo proof-of-concept code for five of the six “interactionless” security bugs that made the OS vulnerable to hackers who could have exploited it via the iMessage client. If sold in the exploit market, these six bugs would have reportedly fetched over $5 million.
The bugs were discovered by Google Project Zero security researchers Natalie Silvanovich and Samuel Groß. ZDNet reports that all the six security flaws were patched on July 22 when Apple rolled out the iOS 12.4 update. As per Silvanovich, details about one of the "interactionless" vulnerabilities are kept private because the latest iOS update did not completely patch the bug. Silvanovich will be holding a presentation about these vulnerabilities at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas next week.
How the bugs could have compromised iOS securityThe researcher said that out of the six vulnerabilities, four could have lead to the execution of malicious code on a remote iOS device, with no user interaction needed. To compromise the device, an attacker could have sent a malicious message to the victim's phone. In such cases, the code is executed once the user opens and views the received message. The fifth and sixth bugs could have allowed an attacker to extract data from the compromised device's memory and read files off the device remotely, this too, with no user interaction.
According to a price chart published by US-based information security company Zerodium, if these bugs were sold on the exploit market, they could have brought over $1 million each for every vulnerability. It means that the bugs which the researchers published are valued between $5 million and $10 million. Vulnerability research hub Crowdfense told ZDNet that since the exploits were “interactionless,” and the vulnerabilities worked on recent versions of iOS exploits, these could have been valued between $2 million and $4 million each, that is, the total value of the bugs is between $20 million and $24 million.

Windows 10 cloud reinstall option coming soon
It appears Windows 10 is scheduled to get a new feature that could save users a lot of effort while reinstalling their operating system. It’s a feature that MacOS has enjoyed for quite some time now. Dubbed “Cloud download”, the feature is expected to be found in Windows’ reset options in Settings along with “Reset locally”, which means users reinstalling Windows 10 in the future can either choose to use a local image or download it afresh from the cloud.
The news of the new Windows 10 reset method that Microsoft is currently working on comes in the form of a tweet sent by WalkingCat. According to the tweet, the boot menu in the leaked Windows Build 18950 (for the upcoming 201H1 update) gives the user an option to reinstall the existing operating system using a local image or download Windows from the cloud. This build has reportedly been leaked before its official roll-out to the Windows Insider Fast ring users.
An earlier report by groovyPost claims that Microsoft Surface devices such as the Surface Book and Surface Pro already come with an option to download the Windows 10 image from the cloud at the time of setup. “Recover from the Cloud is especially handy if your recovery partition is corrupt. Microsoft has not documented the feature anywhere on its official Surface web page,” writes groovyPost in its report while explaining how to use the feature.
Earlier this week, another leaked internal Windows 10 build showed us that Microsoft is working on a redesign of the Start menu in which the popular Live Tiles are missing and the icons are unnaturally large. You can see how the new Start menu that’s still in development looks here. The redesigned Start menu and Cloud download feature aren’t expected in the stable release of Windows 10 till June next year.

PUBG Mobile Lite tops Google Play Store Ranking in just three days
It is obvious that PUBG Mobile has taken the world by storm. However, the game was not playable on all smartphones especially entry-level devices with 1 or 2GB RAM. PUBG Mobile Lite was in the works for quite some time and the game finally hit the market. The game hit the Google Play Store and, in just three days, has become the number 1 downloaded app on the Google Play Store. Numbers from the app's page on Google Play Store say it has crossed more than 10 million downloads. The highlight of the game is its ability to run on low-end devices with 1 or 2 GB RAM.
In an official release, PUBG said, “PUBG MOBILE LITE, attracts attention by reaching the number 1 spot on the Google Play Store, within the first 3 days of launch. This is not too surprising, given the popularity of the mobile version of the game within the country. Built with Unreal Engine 4, this version of PUBG MOBILE is compatible with even more devices and optimized for devices with less RAM without compromising on the gameplay experience, which has attracted millions of fans around the world. The popularity of PUBG MOBILE LITE can be attributed to the fact that a considerable segment of the Indian smartphone market comprises of ‘entry-level smartphones’ and now thanks to the new lighter version - PUBG MOBILE LITE, this segment has access to a game which was beyond their reach.”
We at Digit ran the game on a smartphone with 1GB RAM and the game ran smoothly. PUBG Mobile Lite does make the obvious compromises. For starters, the map is smaller when compared to the full mobile version. Instead of 100 players, PUBG Mobile Lite has 60 players on the map. In terms of textures and game assets, you will notice that things like furniture and other items in the houses and hangers are missing. The terrain in the game is simpler too. Graphically, the game runs at a lower resolution. That doesn't mean the game is unplayable. The best part about PUBG Mobile Lite is the fact that the game runs butter smooth and is very responsive on the 1GB RAM device. Foliage is one key asset in the game. Players use the foliage to hide and take on unsuspecting enemies. The foliage representation in the game is good and works well for cover. Elements like smoke grenades and vehicles too work as they do in PUBG Mobile.
Needless to say, we enjoyed our experience with the game on an entry-level device. You can check out our detailed hands-on of PUBG Mobile Lite running on a Redmi Go here. If you are new to PUBG Mobile Lite here are some tips and tricks to help you get that chicken dinner.

2020 iPhone could support time-of-flight 3D sensors: Report
While the 2019 iPhones are yet to be launched, the rumour mill is already churning out predictions for the 2020 iPhones. According to some reports, Apple is expected to release three new iPhones this year. As for 2020, the tech giant could supposedly incorporate time-of-flight (ToF) sensors in the future iPhones. Additionally, Apple might also include 5G connectivity in next year’s iPhone models.
Previously, a report speculated that Apple might introduce VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) ToF sensors on the rear of the 2020 iPhone models. The setup is similar to the TrueDepth camera setup found on the current iPhone models, but on the front. Ming Chi Kuo, a well-known analyst, has also predicted that Apple might bring ToF sensors to its 2020 iPhone lineup.
In the latest research note shared by 9to5Mac, Kuo claims that at least two of the 2020 iPhone models could feature a ToF sensor on the rear. Furthermore, Kuo added that Apple might introduce three iPhone models next year with Face ID support.
Additionally, according to Kuo, all three 2020 iPhone models could support 5G connectivity. He added that 5G iPhone models might support both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. Last year, Kuo also said that Apple could first bring ToF-sensing technology to the iPad lineup sometime in early 2020.
As for VCSEL, it is currently used in a number of consumer electronics products. It is a semiconductor that emits infrared light, and it is primarily used to enable augmented reality-based applications and range finding. It could help Apple create a much bigger use case for AR-based applications while enabling users to capture photos with even more detail.
Apple is expected to introduce an all-new iPhone lineup in 2020. However, all these are speculations at the moment and it’s fairly early to trust them all.
As for this year, the tech giant might launch three iPhone 11 models with A13 chip, taptic engine, and more.

Google Pixel 4 confirmed to have Motion Sense, Face Unlock
It seems that Google has taken up the mantle to best the industry leaksters. Earlier, when tipsters were sharing source-based information about the camera of Google's upcoming phone, the company went ahead and posted an image of the camera module. Similarly this time around, when news of Google’s Soli radar chip cropped-up, the tech giant edged forward and announced that the company will use Soli motion-sensing radar, which it has been working on for the last five years. This new technology is expected to enable Motion Sense and Face Unlock functionalities.
We have already seen these features in some other phones. Talking about Motion Sense, LG was first to introduce this concept in LG G8 that was launched at MWC this year. It called the feature Air Motion, which allowed users to use gestures to perform tasks like changing songs, increase/decrease volume, etc. When it comes to Face Unlock, it was first introduced by Apple in the iPhone X (Face ID) almost two years ago. Since then, other OEMs have been trying to replicate it by using the front camera, however, unlike others, Google is adding sensors in the Pixel 4.
Moreover, the company also took a dig at Apple and said that keeping users’ privacy and security in mind, it will store the facial data used to unlock the device on the Titan M chip on the phone. “As we shared last month, Pixel 4 is in the works. Today we’re giving you an early look at the technology behind two new features coming to Pixel 4 that make your phone more helpful and represent the next step in our vision for ambient computing,” the company said in a blog post.
Motion SenseAs mentioned above, Google has confirmed that it will be using Soli motion-sensing radar to power this feature. It said that the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects team (ATAP) has been working on Soli for the past five years. Google says that it has developed a miniature version of the radar used to detect planes and large objects. The radar will be located at the top of Pixel 4 and it will sense small motions around the phone. Along with software algorithms, the radar will be able to recognise gestures. With the Soli radar at its disposal, the Pixel 4 will let users skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving their hand(s). Google says that these capabilities are “just the start, and just as Pixel phones get better over time, Motion Sense will evolve as well.” Motion Sense will be available in select Pixel countries.
Face unlock“Unlocking your phone should be easy, fast, and secure. Your device should be able to recognise you — and only you — without any fuss. Face unlock may be a familiar feature for smartphones, but we’re engineering it differently,” Google noted. While taking a dig at Apple, Google said that unlike “other phones” that are required to be lifted “all the way up, pose in a certain way, wait for it to unlock, and then swipe to get to the homescreen”, Pixel 4 does “all of that in a much more streamlined way.” Apple has apparently improved upon the feature in the iPad Pro and it is likely to bring a better version in the 2019 iPhones.
Google says that as a user reaches for Pixel 4, Soli turns on the face unlock sensors and recognises that the user may want to unlock the phone. “If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognise a user, the phone will open as you pick it up, all in one motion,” Google claims. It adds that face unlock works in almost any orientation- even if the phone is held upside down - and the feature can be used for secure payments and app authentications. The comapny also released an image showing the components used for these features. There is no secondary camera on the front, it could mean that Google is going ahead with a single camera like the one in the Pixel 3a.
The company also mentions that it has taken into account the privacy and security of the users. It highlights that the face unlock feature uses facial recognition technology that is processed on the device. It claims that the images used for face unlock are not saved or shared with other Google services and the face data is securely stored in Pixel's Titan M security chip, which was introduced in Pixel3 devices. Similarly, Soli sensor data is said to be processed on the phone, and never saved or shared with other Google services.

Qualcomm and Tencent team up to create 5G gaming devices: Report
Qualcomm and Tencent are teaming up to make the Chinese giant’s mobile games run better on Snapdragon-powered smartphones. There’s also talks of a 5G-powered, Tencent-backed gaming phone that will be powered by a Qualcomm 5G modem and the company’s flagship processor, according to a Reuters report.
The cooperation could see Tencent games ‘optimised’ for Android phones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. Qualcomm has the Elite Gaming program under which certain chipsets are better optimised to handle gaming and offer a richer experience. Now that the hardware is ready, Tencent will provide the games that will work better with the chipsets. It’s not the first time Tencent will work with a smartphone OEM to optimise their games.
Tencent’s most popular game PUBG Mobile already comes with special optimisations in certain smartphones. The Vivo Z1 Pro, for instance, is the official smartphone for the PUBG Mobile Club Open championship and comes with special features like 3D vibrations, training room and the likes. The new ROG Phone II by Asus also offers special support for gamepads, mouse and keyboard for the mobile game. The gaming phone is powered by the new Snapdragon 855 Plus allowing the game to take advantage of the overclocked CPU.
The report also claims Tencent and Qualcomm are working on a 5G gaming phone that could help with Tencent’s plans to launch a game streaming service. 5G gaming devices could also make way for allowing resource-intensive PC games to be played on phones via Google’s and Microsoft’s game streaming services.
“Mobile gaming, an important 5G use case, will soon take advantage of the next generation of connectivity. Faster speeds, more bandwidth, and cutting edge ultra-low latency will support real-time, multi-player and immersive gaming experience,” Frank Meng, Qualcomm China Chairman told Reuters in a statement.
Tencent is yet to reveal details about its cloud-based game streaming service, but it’s likely to be called Instant Play and could be pitched to game developers to power streaming games.
The report also states that the partnership will include tweaking games for laptops powered by Qualcomm’s processors with 5G connectivity instead of Wi-Fi chips.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ specs sheet leaked, 5G variant benchmarked
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is almost a week away from being unveiled, and new information about the device has started circulating on the internet. A new report claims to bring us the spec sheet of the Galaxy Note 10+. Another report claims that the 5G variant has been benchmarked on Geekbench. Previously, it was expected that the higher model of the Galaxy Note 10 will be called Galaxy Note 10 Pro, but as we previously reported, there's a chance that it might be launched as the Galaxy Note 10+.
There have been a few leaked images and renders of the Galaxy Note 10+ already, but now, we have a leak of specs sheet. According to the new leak, the Galaxy Note 10+ could feature a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ 3040×1440 pixel resolution display with 498ppi. The display is said to be protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and the phone is expected to be powered by the 7nm Exynos 9825 processor, paired with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.0 internal storage. Additionally, it could have a microSD card slot.
On the optics front, the Galaxy Note 10+ is expected to sport a triple rear camera setup. The primary 12MP camera could have a three-stage variable aperture with f/1.5, f/1.8, and f/2.4 aperture setting. The secondary 12MP telephoto camera could come with an f/2.1 lens for better low-light zoom pictures. The 16MP tertiary camera is said to have an f/2.2 wide-angle lens. Additionally, rumours suggest that there could be a ToF sensor on board as well. As for the selfie department, the smartphone could come with a 10MP front camera.
The leaks claim that the Galaxy Note 10+ could be powered by a 4,300mAh battery that might support 45W fast charging. However, the 45W charger is said to be absent from the box, and one could have to buy it separately. The phone could measure 162.3mm x 77.1mm x 7.9mm, and weigh 198g.
As for the connectivity options, Galaxy Note 10+ is expected to have 20W wireless charging, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6. It could also sport AKG-branded stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
The Galaxy Note 10+ leaked spec sheet doesn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary. Also, there’s no mention of IR blaster, which some have been hoping for.
Coming to the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G Geekbench leak, the phone is tipped to come equipped with 12GB RAM and the Exynos 9825 chipset. The 5G variant apparently scored around 4,500 points and 10,400 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. If the numbers are to be believed, they are on par with the Galaxy S10+. The specifications are expected to remain similar to the Galaxy Note 10+. Previously, Galaxy Note 10 was spotted on Geekbench as well.
Meanwhile, images of the pink colour variant of the Galaxy Note 10 have also started floating around the internet. According to WinFuture, the new colour model could be limited to certain regions. It’s unclear if the Galaxy Note 10+ will also get the pink colour variant.
Samsung’s new Note 10 devices will be unveiled on August 7 in New York City. Additionally, it is worth mentioning reports suggest that smartphones could become available for pre-order on the same date.

Lenovo launches Tab V7 with 69-inch display, 5180mAh battery in India at Rs 12,990
Lenovo has launched the Tab V7 in India, a 7-inch phablet (smartphone + tablet) device at a starting price of Rs 12,990. The Tab V7 sports a 6.9-inch display, 5180mAh battery, and 4G VoLTE connectivity. The Lenovo Tab V7 is set to go on sale on Flipkart starting August 1. It will eventually be available on other channels, including Amazon.in and Lenovo.com. It will also be available through offline retailers, such as Croma and Reliance Digital.
The Tab V7 will be sold in two variants: one with 3GB RAM + 32GB storage (for Rs 12,990) and another with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage (for Rs 14,990). Onboard storage can be expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card. The display is a 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with an 18:9 aspect ratio and Full HD resolution (1080 x 2160 pixels). Lenovo claims the device has a screen-to-body ratio of 81 percent and a slim build. Measuring 7.89mm in thickness and weighing in at 195g, Lenovo's new phablet also features Dolby Audio through its two front-facing speakers.
Lenovo says that the Tab V7's 5180mAh battery is good for up to 10 hours of local video playback and browsing, and up to 30 hours of talktime. The Lenovo Tab V7 has a single 13MP camera on the back and a single 5MP camera on the front, with night shot and panorama modes in the default camera app along with HDR capability. Though it has a fingerprint scanner on the back panel, the tablet supports face unlock too. The Tab V7 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 mobile platform with an Octa-core processor and runs Android 9 Pie right out of the box.
“Tablet market is showing signs of recovery, driven by the potential demand from sectors like Government, education, banking and finance and as the market leader, we are well positioned to lead this growth,” commented Rahul Agarwal, CEO and MD of Lenovo India in the company's press release. Lenovo's belief in the tablet market appears to be contrary to Google's, which recently confirmed its decision to stop making tablets altogether and instead focus on laptops. You can read more about that here.

Its official: Apple to acquire majority of Intels smartphone modem business
Two days after a report claimed that Apple is going to buy Intel’s smartphone modem business, the Cupertino-based giant has confirmed the development and provided more clarity on the deal. Apple and Intel have signed an agreement for Apple to acquire “the majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business. The deal, which is valued at $1 billion, is expected to be closed in the fourth quarter of 2019, Apple said. The transaction, however, is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, including works council and other relevant consultations in certain jurisdictions.
As a part of the deal, about 2,200 Intel employees will join the iPhone-maker, along with intellectual property, equipment, and leases. Apple also highlighted that by combining the acquired patents for the current and future wireless technology with the company’s existing portfolio, it will hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents. These patents range from protocols for cellular standards to modem architecture and modem operation. Intel, however, will retain the ability to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs, internet-of-things devices, and autonomous vehicles.
“We’ve worked with Intel for many years and know this team shares Apple’s passion for designing technologies that deliver the world’s best experiences for our users. Apple is excited to have so many excellent engineers to join our growing cellular technologies group, and know they’ll thrive in Apple’s creative and dynamic environment. They, together with our significant acquisition of innovative IP, will help expedite our development on future products and allow Apple to further differentiate moving forward,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies.
Intel CEO Bob Swan added that the agreement will enable the company to focus on developing technology for the 5G network. “We have long respected Apple and we’re confident they provide the right environment for this talented team and these important assets moving forward. We’re looking forward to putting our full effort into 5G where it most closely aligns with the needs of our global customer base, including network operators, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and cloud service providers,” Swan noted.
Previously, Apple depended on Qualcomm for smartphone modems, but Intel and Apple partnered for 5G modems for future iPhones when the Tim Cook-led company’s relationship with Qualcomm jeopardised by a patent lawsuit. In December, it was reported that Apple’s relationship with Qualcomm soured over time and, since Intel was facing a problem of heat dissipation caused by the 8060 modem chip, Apple decided to take the matter into its own hands, and posted a job listing for a cellular modem systems architect.
It is implied that the company’s plans didn’t come out as it wanted to, and after a two-year long feud, a surprise agreement was reached between Apple and Qualcomm in April. Hours after the development made headlines, Intel announced that it was dropping out of the 5G smartphone modem business. If we are to believe the analysts’ expectations and rumours, Apple will launch a 5G phone in 2020.

Sonys wearable air conditioner can keep you cool on the go
If you have always dreamed of an air conditioner that you could take with you on the go, then you aren't alone. Battling the heat is a task but it looks like Sony may have the answer. The company has announced the Reno Pocket, a portable air conditioner that is smaller and lighter than a smartphone. The device sits on the back of an undershirt just below the wearer's neck and has the ability to cool the body by about 13 degrees Celsius when compared to the temperature of the surroundings. It also has the ability to provide the user with heat during winters by raising the temperature by about 8 degrees Celsius.
The device can be controlled by a smartphone app. The app works on iOS and Android and connects to the Reon via Bluetooth. The device charges via USB-C and can take about 2 hours to charge for 90 minutes of use. It is light, weighing in at about 85g. The device will be available in two variants - the Reon Pocket Standard and Reon Pocket Lite. The Reon Pocket Lite is cheaper and only works with manual controls whereas the Reon Pocket Standard works with a smartphone. The Reon Pocket Standard will have an auto mode as well. The undershirt is available in three sizes - small, medium and large.
Sony started the crowdfunding campaign for the device on Sunday and has met 43 percent of its funding goal. The device will, unfortunately, only be available in Japan. The price of the device will range from 12,760 yen (about Rs 8,100 directly converted) to 19,030 yen (about Rs 12,000 directly converted). This will depend on the version and how many undershirts you decide to get with the device. If the funding requirement is met, then we can see the device being launched sometime around 2020.

Windows 10 leaked internal build reveals new app drawer-like Start menu with no Live Tiles
There's much outcry happening on Twitter and other online forums over Windows 10's new unfinished Start menu design. Spotted originally by Twitter user NTAuthority and eventually by Windows Central, the new Start menu is found in a leaked internal release of Windows 10 numbered Build 18947. The new design ditches the two-column approach with Live Tiles for something more rudimentary and unappealing. But we suggest you consider what you see with a pinch of salt because it's not the finished design.
Start. pic.twitter.com/3QvWGPdQW9
— NTAuthority (@NTAuthority) July 24, 2019NTAuthority shared two screenshots last evening: one that shows the new Start menu in Windows 10's default desktop mode and one that shows the new Start menu in Windows 10's Tablet mode. In either case, the iconic Windows menu is nothing like what we currently know it to be. Retaining only the slim hamburger menu on the extreme left, the menu loses the two-column architecture and settles for an Android app drawer-style look. Oh, and it also has no Live Tiles, a feature Microsoft introduced in Windows 8.
Start in tablet mode. Meh. pic.twitter.com/Ou7o7ol5g2
— NTAuthority (@NTAuthority) July 24, 2019The icons of all the installed apps and shortcuts show up on the new Start menu as unnaturally large blocks, as if someone has turned on the Magnifier accessibility tool only for the menu. Fortunately, as it's demonstrated in Windows Central's video, there's an option to take you back to the old Start menu look. The biggest difference between the Start menu in the default desktop mode and the one in Tablet mode is the placement of the entire menu. In Tablet mode, the same Start menu appears in a transparent full-screen window so the icons are more accessible.
The new Start menu also seems to place more emphasis on the user icon, which is normally found on the hamburger menu as an icon of regular size with the user's picture. In the new version of Start, the user icon is significantly larger and at the top, where it's easily found. This is not the case in the Tablet mode though. At any rate, it's hard to say if Microsoft will pursue this design for its final build. If it does, then it may spell the end for Live Tiles. We'll just have to wait and see what Microsoft does with this new design.

Facebook fined 5 billion by FTC for failing to protect users privacy
After being in the spotlight for quite some for its involvement in several data leak cases, Facebook has been awarded a settlement fine of $5 billion (approx Rs 35,000 crore). The fine was imposed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after it concluded an investigation into the Cambridge Analytica scandal and other privacy breaches in which the social media giant was mired in. The US government agency also told the company to establish an independent privacy committee that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Chief Executive Officer, will not have control over. The FTC alleged that Facebook violated the law by failing to protect users’ data from third parties, serving ads through the use of phone numbers provided for security, and lying to users that its facial recognition software was turned off by default.
“The Commission’s career enforcement staff conducted an extremely thorough investigation for over a year that focused on all potential violations of the FTC’s 2012 order and Section 5 of the FTC Act. The sweeping settlement announced today is based on the staff’s recommendation, and includes three major components: a record-breaking $5 billion penalty; new substantive privacy and data security requirements; and significant structural reforms to ensure greater corporate accountability, more rigorous compliance monitoring, and increased transparency,” FTC said in a joint statement by Chairman Joe Simons, and Commissioners Noah Joshua Phillips and Christine S. Wilson.
The fine is said to be the biggest ever imposed on any company for violating its consumers' privacy. The $5 billion penalty is approximately 9 percent of Facebook’s 2018 revenue and approximately 23 percent of its 2018 profit. FTC also told Facebook to enforce its platform terms against app developers on the basis of the severity of the violation. “Pursuant to the Order, Facebook must expand its existing privacy program to cover WhatsApp and any Facebook product or service that receives personal information from Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Moreover, this is the first FTC order to address biometric information, requiring Facebook to get consumers’ option consent before using or sharing such information in ways that exceed prior disclosures and consents,” the FTC said.
While the settlement announced is based on the FTC staff’s recommendation, for some Democratic FTC commissioners, the penalty imposed on the company is just a way to get out of trouble. “The settlement’s $5 billion penalty makes for a good headline...but the terms and conditions, including blanket immunity for Facebook executives and no real restraints on Facebook’s business model, do not fix the core problems that led to these violations. The settlement imposes no meaningful changes to the company’s structure or financial incentives nor does it include any restrictions on the company’s mass surveillance or advertising tactics. Instead, the order allows Facebook to decide for itself how much information it can harvest from users and what it can do with that information, as long as it creates a paper trail,” FTC commissioner Rohit Chopra said.
Meanwhile, Facebook reiterated that it had made large strides in privacy, had given people more control over their data, and had closed down apps and applied more resources in protecting people’s information. “But even measured against these changes, the privacy program we are building will be a step change in terms of how we handle data. We will be more robust in ensuring that we identify, assess and mitigate privacy risk. We will adopt new approaches to more thoroughly document the decisions we make and monitor their impact. And we will introduce more technical controls to better automate privacy safeguards. As part of this effort, we will be undertaking a review of our systems,” Facebook said in a statement.

New Xbox One home screen and voice commands rolling out to Xbox Insiders
Microsoft has updated its home screen experience for the Xbox One console. The new home layout doesn't have tabs for Game Pass, store, mixer, etc. instead, they are all buttons below the “resume” game tile. On the right, we have access to the “My games and apps” screen making the entire layout more compact and easily accessible. According to the official Xbox website, “With this new experimental Home design, the first thing you’ll notice is we’ve removed the Twists from the top of Home in favour of separate buttons that launch your gaming experiences. The goal is to let you jump into Xbox Game Pass, Mixer, Xbox Community and Microsoft Store quicker than ever. We’ve also shifted things around to make more room for your recently played titles”.
The new home screen is rolling out to select Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings. This isn't the final design though. According to Xbox, the home experience will continue to evolve and change based on users feedback. So it is possible that we will see some features tweaked or moved around before the final build is released. Xbox says that users “may see this layout change and even come and go as we iterate on your feedback”.
There are some changes to Xbox voice commands. Xbox has said that users can no longer talk to Cortana via a headset. However, the Xbox Skill for Cortana via the Cortana app on iOS, Android, and Windows will still work for commands like powering on the Xbox One, adjusting volume, launching games and apps, capturing screenshots, etc. The same can be done with an Alexa enabled speaker. With memory freed up from Cortana on the Xbox One, it is possible that the UI becomes a little smoother and loads a little faster. In the current UI, there are times when the UI can get quite laggy and slow. Hopefully, this will be addressed with the new home screen update.
A full roll-out of the update for all users will come this fall. There is no exact date mentioned for the same on the Xbox site.
Ever since the launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft has constantly tired new things to update the UI and add new features to the console. Even though the next-generation Xbox is rumoured to launch in 2020, it is nice to see new features being worked upon on the current-generation console.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 specs leaked, could be launched before Galaxy Note 10
The launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is just around the corner, and while the phone(s) have been leaked and talked about to death, another device we’re finally starting to get details on is the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2.
New rumours shed some light on the potential specs of the new wearable from Samsung. The Galaxy Watch Active is rumoured to come in 40mm and 42mm sizes, with the display on the respective size measuring 1.2 inches and 1.4 inches. Samsung will protect the Super AMOLED display on both the watches with Gorilla Glass DX+ and the watches are expected to weigh just 31 grams for the 40mm version and 36 grams for the 42mm version. Both watches will use a steel or aluminium case that will be MIL-STD 810G certified.
While rumours have long suggested that the rotating bezel won't be present any longer on Samsung’s wearable, the Watch Active 2 is rumoured to have a touch-sensitive bezel around the watch face. This could work just as easily as the rotating dial, but it would be interesting to see how Samsung manages to separate the touch interface of the watch face from the touch input on the bezels. The Watch Active 2 will employ the same Samsung Exynos 9110 SoC as its predecessor, with 768 MB of RAM on the Bluetooth-only model and 1.5GB on the LTE-capable wearable. Both will get 4GB of internal storage.
What is interesting is that the renders leaked by @evleaks show a date of August 5 on the watch, hinting that maybe Samsung could announce the new watch ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 announcement on August 7.

Google is buying faces of passers-by for Rs 345: Report
The news that Google is quietly developing its own Apple Face ID-like technology for its Pixel line-up of smartphones has been making the rounds on the internet for quite some time now. But Google appears to be more serious about it than we anticipated. We say this because, according to a recent report by ZDNet, Google is buying facial data of passers-by in the US for $5, which translates to about Rs 350 in India. We imagine this data will help the Android-maker train its new face unlock system better.
In a recent ZDNet report, frequent contributor Chris Matyszczyk writes about his friend George, who was, on one sunny day, ambling through a park in New York only to be encountered by a Google representative for a quick survey. “I basically had to use selfie mode and move my face around to get different angles of my face,” Matyszczyk quotes his friend as saying. In return for his time, Google reportedly offered him a $5 gift card to either Amazon or Starbucks.
From the article, we gather that Google is currently collecting data “to improve the next generation of facial recognition phone unlocking”. Google is apparently conducting this sort of survey in multiple cities across the US. While we're not entirely sure for which device Google is honing its facial recognition tech, our guess is that it's for the upcoming Pixel model, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Google is most likely collecting the facial data of real people to train its neural network to read faces better in the upcoming Pixel devices.
It's hard to say whether Google's public collection of people's facial data in this manner is ethically right or wrong. “Google basically has my whole life on their servers already. And removing Google from my life just isn't going to happen from a practical point of view. I don't really care about data privacy because I think it's all an illusion anyway,” Matyszczyk quotes his friend as saying while discussing data privacy.
