WhatsApp for Android finally receives Fingerprint lock feature in stable version

Android users can finally stop using third-party lock apps to secure their personal messages because WhatsApp is finally rolling out the much-awaited Fingerprint lock feature in the app’s latest stable version. The new feature, which has been available for public testing in the beta version of WhatsApp since August this year, will allow Android users to unlock their WhatsApp app with their registered fingerprint in the same way they unlock their phone’s screen lock.

WhatsApp made the feature announcement quietly in the form of a blog post on its website. In the short post, the Facebook-owned messaging company isn’t talking about updating the app to a specific build to get the feature, so that must mean the feature is activated remotely from WhatsApp servers. If you aren’t seeing it appear in Settings just yet, you should, in the next few days. As long as you have the latest version of the popular messaging app installed and a fingerprint scanner on your phone, you should see the option appear soon enough.

“To enable it [the new fingerprint unlock feature], tap Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock. Turn on Unlock with fingerprint, and confirm your fingerprint,” writes WhatsApp in its blog post. After that, every time you tap the WhatsApp icon you’ll be prompted for your fingerprint, just like the screen lock on your phone. If you want to delay the automatic locking of the app, you can set a delay interval of either one or thirty minutes in the same Fingerprint lock section in WhatsApp Settings.

WhatsApp for iOS received support for Touch ID and Face ID on Apple devices early in the year but was plagued by a nasty bypass bug soon after. You can read more about that incident here. Sometime in late March, we began spotting beta builds of WhatsApp for Android crop up with support for Fingerprint lock. Roughly half a year later, the feature has made it to the stable version of the popular messaging app. In related news, WhatsApp is developing a multi-login feature that will allow users to use multiple accounts in the same app. You can read more about that here.

Xiaomi Mi Watch will run MIUI for Watch, to have a dedicated app store

Xiaomi is planning to launch a smartwatch alongside the Mi Note 10 (CC9 Pro in China) on November 5. While there were rumours that it will run WearOS, that didn’t turn out to be true. The company has revealed that Mi Watch will run a special version of its Android-based operating system called MIUI for Watch. It is expected to be an open ecosystem that incorporates MIUI into wearables. The company has revealed two videos that show the OS in action.

According to the reports, MIUI for Watch will have a dedicated app store. It is said to include apps like maps and even TikTok. Further, the store will have music streaming apps and several watch faces as well. One of the videos shows a video streaming app in use. However, why would anybody like to watch a video on a watch is yet to be known.

The Xiaomi smartwatch will most likely be powered by the Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor. Earlier reports have given us a quick look at what’s inside the new Xiaomi smartwatch: radios for Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS. Further, there’s an internal battery of unknown capacity, a card slot (for either storage or physical SIM), and a module for eSIM support.

Mi Watch resembles the Apple Watch. It will launch in China alongside the Mi Note 10, which is tipped to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, paired with 6GB RAM. The smartphone is said to have a penta-camera setup with 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX main sensor. Moreover, leaked images also show a curved display, a waterdrop notch, and hint at a tall aspect ratio.

The Mi Watch, Xiaomi Mi Note 10,  and Mi TV 5 series will be announced on November 5 at an event in China. Availability and price are yet to be known.

WhatsApp could finally let users log into multiple devices simultaneously

There was a time when WhatsApp was the only chat app that everyone talked about. However, it is now facing competition from numerous other apps like Telegram, WeChat and others. Developers of the app have been adding new features to their online messaging app so that users don’t switch to its rival’s offerings. It recently added a new fingerprint lock mechanism in the app that enables users to lock the app and unlock it via fingerprint authentication. Now, as per WABetaInfo, WhatsApp might finally enable its users to simultaneously log in to more than one device.

The information was outed via a tweet by WABetaInfo, which reads, “As previously announced, WhatsApp is developing a feature what will allow to use your WhatsApp account on more devices at the same time. Chats will be still end-to-end encrypted because WhatsApp was developing a new method to assign keys to specific device.” As mentioned, WhatsApp won’t take risks when it comes to privacy and security since the chats will still be end-to-end encrypted. This will apparently be done with a new method to assign keys to specific device and while we don’t really know the details, we expect to find more about this feature when, and if, it is officially announced.

As previously announced, WhatsApp is developing a feature what will allow to use your WhatsApp account on more devices at the same time. Chats will be still end-to-end encrypted because WhatsApp was developing a new method to assign keys to specific devices.

— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) October 29, 2019

As mentioned above, WhatsApp was recently updated with the ability to implement fingerprint authentication for access. This option is currently available only in Beta and under the Privacy tab under Settings. After setting up the option, one will be prompted to use their fingerprint to access WhatsApp chats. In other WhatsApp news, WABetaInfo has reported that a new Group Privacy settings, including Blacklist is now available for beta users of the app. The new options can be used on the 2.19.110.20 on iOS and 2.19.298 on Android.

The group privacy setting was made available for some users in India already and it enables one to select who can add them to groups. There was a ‘Nobody’ option that can be selected so that no one could add you to groups without your consent. This option has apparently been replaced with ‘My contacts except…’

WhatsApp confirms Israeli spyware used to snoop on Indian journalists and activists before 2019 General Elections

WhatsApp has revealed that Israeli spyware Pegasus was used to snoop on Indian journalists and human rights activists in a disclosure that followed a lawsuit in a US federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday. Facebook-owned WhatsApp alleged that over 1,400 WhatsApp users were targets of surveillance by Pegasus.

While WhatsApp declined to mention the number of people compromised, or even their identities, a WhatsApp spokesperson told The Indian Express that the company was aware of the issue and had contacted each one of them. The spokesperson did state the number of people targeted were “not an insignificant number.”

The report by Indian Express claims at least two dozen academics, lawyers, Dalit activists and journalists across India were alerted by WhatsApp that their phones have been under surveillance for a two-week period till May 2019. The time period coincides with the 2019 General Elections in India.

The NSO group which built the Pegasus spyware strongly denied WhatsApp’s allegations. In a statement to the Indian Express, the NSO said, “In the strongest possible terms, we dispute today’s allegations and will vigorously fight them. Our technology is not designed or licensed for use against human rights activists and journalists.”

Doubts about NSO’s technology were first raised back in May when Amnesty International filed an lawsuit in an Israeli court alleging the Pegasus spyware created by the NSO Group has been used to keep tabs on its staff and other human rights activists.

The NSO Group claimed that it licenses the software only to vetted and legitimate government agencies.

How does Pegasus work?

The Pegasus spyware doesn’t intercept WhatsApp messages from one end or the other. Instead, it convinces the target to either click on a ‘exploit link’ after which, the pegasus spyware is installed without the user’s knowledge. The spyware then begins contacting the command and control servers to receive and execute commands. The software can send back voice calls, text messages, calendar events, contact lists, passwords and even turn on the phone’s camera and microphone. In later versions, Pegasus did not even have to send a clickable link. It could infect the phone through a missed video call on WhatsApp.

As a result, while WhatsApp’s messages continued to remain encrypted end-to-end, the spyware was able to capture the data simply by monitoring what’s being typed on screen.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC spotted on Geekbench

Samsung may be looking forward to launching the ‘lite’ variant of its flagship, the Galaxy S10. As we reported earlier, the South Korean manufacturer is planning to launch even more versions of its Galaxy S10. Now, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite has been spotted on Geekbench. While the smartphone is still a mystery, a Samsung device bearing the SM-G770F model number has appeared on a Geekbench 5 listing, which has revealed some details about the Galaxy S10 Lite.

According to the Geekbench 5 listing, Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, paired with 8GB RAM. It may run Android 10 out of the box. The smartphone managed 724 points in the single-core department and 2,604 in the multi-core test. Interestingly, the scores are higher than both Exynos and Snapdragon version of the regular S10.

A recent report also revealed the colours of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite. It is expected to come in ‘some familiar paint jobs’, including white, black, and blue. Furthermore, green and yellow variants, as seen in the Galaxy S10e, could be added in the future.

From what we know thus far, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite could be a repackaged Galaxy A91. It is tipped to feature a  6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution. As for the optics, the smartphone is said to sport a triple camera setup with a 48MP main shooter with an aperture of f/2.0 and phase-detection autofocus. Further, it may have a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with an aperture of f/2.2, and a 5MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.2.

2020 5G iPhones to use Qualcomm X55 modem and 5nm chipset: Report

While most premium smartphone makers came out with 5G flagships, Apple was one of the few that held out this year. But that could change in 2020 if a new report out of Japan is to be believed. The 2020 iPhones, according to a new report, will come with 5G support by using Qualcomm's X55 5G modem.

The X55 5G modem from Qualcomm will replace the X50 modem, and based on previous report, it could be sold both as a discrete module or integrated into a Snapdragon platform. Knowing Apple, it will be designing it's own silicon for the upcoming iPhones, and borrow the 5G modem from Qualcomm.

Furthermore, the Apple A14 SoC that will house the 5G modem could be manufactured on the world's most advanced 5nm manufacturing process by TSMC. As of now, Huawei and Apple seems to be the only ones interested in 5nm manufacturing next year.

Based on previous reports, we know at least two out of three iPhones in 2020 will sport flexible OLED displays, giving rise to rumours that we may see a curved display on an iPhone for the first time. Expecting a foldable iPhone might be a bit too much. Technically, Apple has used curved OLED panels since the iPhone X, which is how it could achieve a minimal bottom chin since the display at the bottom end folds into itself. This solution shoots up the cost of production and except for Apple and a few other OEMs, most still prefer the extra bezel at the bottom.

5G phones are expected to become more popular as analysts expects over 206 million 5G phones to be manufactured worldwide in 2020. If Apple do indeed joins the 5G race, it could end up with a big chunk of the market in countries that will see 5G networks go live next year.

PUBG Mobile takes on hackers with new anti-cheat system and real-time detection

PUBG Mobile is one of the most famous battle royale games available for mobile phones. While it is facing stiff competition from other battle royale titles like Call Of Duty: Mobile and Fortnite, it's developers are working hard to add new features and bring new experiences. PUBG Mobile was recently updated with a new payload mode, new weapons and more but the game is still plagued by cheaters who employ unethical means to get a leg up against the competition. To counter this, the company has now introduced a new anti-cheat detection system, which is set to identify and ban in-game cheaters.

This new detection software by PUBG Mobile is said to be the first line of defense against cheaters as it scans for software and modified game data. The company also uses "a massive and ever-expanding library to cross-reference when detecting suspicious software," which helps it keep up with new and evolving hacks and cheating methods. In addition, there are game observation techniques that the game developers leverage to spot players using unfair means for stealing that chicken dinner. Banning players requires considerable deliberation since it is an issue if a genuinely skilled player is kicked out. To ensure only users using hacks and unfair means are banned, PUBG Mobile's security team uses game observation in tandem with its new anti-cheat system and real-time detection software.

As per PUBG Mobile, its observation team can go through gameplay to differentiate between the use of unfair software and player skill, as well as unusual game occurrences due to lag or packet loss. Furthermore, PUBG Mobile developers are able to carry out player bans in real-time, which means hackers can be kicked out even in the midst of an ongoing bout to deliver a better gaming experience for players. It is high time that PUBG Mobile took some major steps in trying to better the in-game environment. The game has been plagued by hackers and cheaters who marr the gaming experience for most players.

The next Samsung Galaxy Fold could be a flip phone-style foldable smartphone

Samsung kicked off a new smartphone segment with the launch of the Galaxy Fold. With a flexible display, six cameras and a whole new form-factor, the Galaxy Fold ushered in a new era of industrial design for smartphones. Even though it was riddled with design issues, Samsung went ahead and launched in the market. In India, the Galaxy Fold can be grabbed for Rs 1,64,999. Now, it seems like Samsung is planning to continue making foldable smartphones. We have reported that Samsung is working on more foldable devices and the company has just teased a vertically folding smartphone. At the Samsung Developer Conference 2019 in the United States, the Korean giant has unveiled a new design for a smartphone that folds into a square.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 flip phone foldable phone prakhar khanna

The new form factor is a completely different approach from that of Galaxy Fold. It folds vertically, like the old flip phones. The teased device is interesting as instead of unfolding into a tablet, it unfolds into a tall smartphone and folds into an easily pocketable device. The new Galaxy Fold is reported to carry the model number SM-F700F and it could come equipped with 256GB of internal storage.

Going from phone to tablet is handy for specific tasks, but a vertical foldable phone could be a more desirable form factor as it makes the smartphone more pocketable.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 vertical prakhar khanna

Earlier, it was reported that Samsung is indeed building a foldable smartphone that folds vertically. However, the patent revealed the design to be similar to Huawei Mate X, that is, a display that would fold outwards. The patent published by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) in August showed how the design could possibly work in practice. It said, “in its folded position, the device would fold with the display outwards like the Huawei Mate X – thus taking up a smaller footprint, while still allowing parts of the display to function for other tasks.” However, the teased device seems to be different than this concept.

Nothing can be said on price and availability as of now. However, Samsung is expected to release a foldable flip phone-style smartphone early next year. We may get a glimpse of it during the launch of Galaxy S11.

Netflix explains its new playback speed tests after Hollywood directors rage online

If you were the director of a war drama film that’s streamed on Netflix by hundreds of millions of viewers, would you give your audience the option to speed up that lengthy but poignant scene that tears the protagonist away from their only newborn? That’s exactly why Hollywood directors were tweeting in rage and disappointment a couple of days ago, after reports of Netflix testing a new playback speed feature on mobile devices surfaced online. Netflix has since responded to the uproar in a blog post, explaining why it’s testing such a feature.

The new playback speed feature on Netflix, which was spotted on some mobile devices a few days ago as part of a public feature test, allows the viewer to either speed up or slow down video playback by up to 1.5x/0.5x. YouTube and other online video players have had this feature for as long as we can remember. Netflix appears to be testing it on certain mobile devices along with the option to change the screen brightness and lock the screen without leaving the playback window. Netflix also wants to find an easier way to access language and audio settings during playback.

When initial reports of Netflix testing this playback speed feature popped up on the internet a couple of days ago, Hollywood directors pushed back heavily against Netflix’s decision to implement it, worried that their artistic efforts would be brought to nothing in the process. In the words of Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Liar Liar), the directors wanted the films and shows to be seen “as they were intended to be seen”. Actor Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Need for Speed) tweeted, “That would mean they are completely taking control of everyone else’s art and destroying it.”

Netflix has since responded to the backlash in a blog post, clarifying that it will not implement all these features under test (including playback speed) until it sees a positive feedback from its users. “We have no plans to roll any of these tests out in the short term. And whether we introduce these features for everyone at some point will depend on the feedback we receive,” writes Keela Robison, Vice President at Netflix in the blog post. What do you think, reader? Would you be opposed to the idea of Netflix getting a feature that even DVD players have had for decades now?

Whelp— another spectacularly bad idea, and another cut to the already bleeding-out cinema experience. Why support & finance filmmakers visions on one hand and then work to destroy the presentation of those films on the other??? https://t.co/T7QdYAQGHU

Google could be buying Fitbit, according to reports

Alphabet, the parent company of Google is reportedly looking forward to acquiring the U.S wearable device maker, Fitbit. The report comes from Reuters, which says Google may join the likes of Apple and Samsung in developing wearables. However, there is no certainty that the negotiations will lead to any deal. Further, the exact price offered by Alphabet is not known.

According to the report, the matter is confidential and both Google and Fitbit have declined to comment. Google has been involved in the wearable market with Wear OS supported by a range of companies including Fossil, LG and more, but has struggled to compete with the Apple Watch. To recall, Google acquired smartwatch technology from Fossil for $40 million, and it is still unclear what that technology was. As Fossil stated, it was a “new product innovation that’s not yet hit the market.”

Over the past couple of years, rumours have suggested that Google has been interested in foraying into the wearable market. In 2016, it was reported that Google almost released a smartwatch, but axed the plans over concerns that the smartwatch could bring down the name of the Google hardware brand.

Google acquired a portion of HTC’s smartphone engineering team to develop its Pixel phones, similarly, we could see a new Google smartwatch if the company goes on to acquire Fitbit.

As for Fitbit, the company launched its latest smartwatch, the Versa 2, recently. It comes with Alexa, online payments and music storage to the device’s capabilities. You can read our review of the Versa 2 here. Reuters had also reported that Fitbit was speaking to investment bank Qatalyst Partners about exploring a sale.

Apple AirPods Pro launched with new design, active noise cancellation at Rs 24,900

Seven months after launching the second-generation AirPods in India at a starting price of Rs 14,900, Apple is back with a new pair. This one, however, is a more sophisticated set of wireless earbuds called AirPods Pro. Apple quietly launched the AirPods Pro in Cupertino, California yesterday for $249. In India though, the new pair costs Rs 24,900. Designed for a tighter fit than the original AirPods and equipped with active noise cancellation, the AirPods Pro come with new features and are currently available only in white.

Unlike the original AirPods, which don’t sport earbuds, the AirPods Pro sit deep inside the ears the way typical in-ear pairs do. According to the press release sent by Apple, the AirPods Pro come with soft, flexible silicone ear tips in three different sizes. Apple says the AirPods Pro are IPX4-rated for sweat- and water-resistance. Apple also says the new pair uses an innovative vent system to equalise pressure within the ears, thereby minimising any discomfort while wearing the earbuds.

Powered by the same 10-core Apple H1 chip that does duty on the AirPods 2 (for both sound and Siri), the AirPods Pro come with a couple of new features, including active noise cancellation. Adaptive EQ, Apple says, automatically tunes the low and mid frequencies of the sound to the shape of the wearer’s ears. Transparency mode employs the inbuilt vent system and a new force sensor on the stem of each earbud to disable the active noise cancellation feature temporarily, allowing the user to listen to their surroundings or the sound of their own voice during a call.

According to Apple, the force sensor on the stem of the earbuds can be used also to play, pause, and skip music tracks. The AirPods Pro come with the same five-hour battery life for music playback as the original AirPods. With active noise cancellation enabled, this figure drops to four and a half hours for music playback and three and a half hours for calls. Using the optional wireless charging case, says Apple, the total battery life of the AirPods Pro can be extended to 24 hours for music playback and 18 hours for calls. Users will have to update to iOS 13.2/iPadOS 13.2 on their iPhone/iPad to use the new AirPods Pro.

Oral-B Genius X is an AI powered toothbrush that can brush-shame you

Ever heard of a toothbrush with AI? Oral-B’s Genius X is just that. The $220 (roughly Rs 15,500) uses artificial intelligence to help you brush better and maintain a better dental hygiene. The price tag, however is more than most people’s annual budget for dental health.

The toothbrush comes with sensors that detect when you’re applying too much pressure or not covering a certain area long enough. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and shows the metrics via an app. The app, in turn, use what Oral-B calls Genius X AI algorithm to give you a rating on how well you have brushed and tell you what you can do to improve.

It’s not the first such AI toothbrush though. Oral-B also has a Bluetooth powered toothbrush from 2014 that can be programmed with the help of dentists while the Genius lineup itself was revealed in 2016. Earlier models, however, relied on your smartphone camera instead of sensors.

Now the brush has been praised by reviewers world wide, but the question remains, does your teeth really need the power of AI?

Google Search can now understand conversational language thanks to AI

Google Search now understands conversational language thanks to a fresh infusion of machine learning. Google’s Pandu Nayak elaborated in a recent blog post how a new development is one of the biggest leaps in the history of Google Search in the past five years.

The new update can now understand natural language. For instance, Search can now understand when you state qualifiers like  ‘from’ and ‘to’, resulting in results that are much closer to what you’re actually look for. All this while, Search would basically ignore these terms and words and focus only on the keywords from your query.

This is achieved thanks to BERT, or Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers, a technique for training neural networks that helps a system understand context in relation to the entire sentence or phrase. Previously, the system would only understand one word in relation to the one next to it.

Google Search is also being improved through better hardware. Google is deploying cloud TPUs to train neural networks handling search queries. Below is an example of what the change will mean for the user —

The change in Google Search is subtle and not very easy to see, but it goes a long way in providing meaningful search results. Google also said it will be using BERT to improve Search with other languages.

Oppo Reno S with 64MP camera, 65W fast charging may launch in December

Oppo Reno series is not even a year old, and the smartphones saw a refresh a couple of months ago. Now, according to new rumours, the Oppo Reno lineup may expand even further before the year ends. The latest report from 91Mobiles claims that Oppo Reno S could launch in India in the month of December. The Oppo Reno S may come equipped with a 64MP camera and 65W Super VOOC fast charging support.

Oppo Reno S may be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. It is tipped to pack a 4000mAh battery that could use Reno Ace’s fast charging technology, which is said to charge the battery to 50 percent in just 10 minutes. Like the Reno Ace, Reno S is expected to sport a triple rear camera setup. However, the 48MP camera may be upgraded to 64MP, wheres there’s no information for the other camera. For reference, apart from the 48MP main sensor, Oppo Reno Ace features a 13MP telephoto camera and an 8MP ultrawide camera.

According to the rumours, Oppo Reno S may cost around Rs 40,000 in India, which is the same as the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom that arrived in India this May. It is expected to launch in the first week of December. As of now, Oppo K5 comes equipped with a 64MP main sensor, but it sports a single 8MP ultra-wide camera and is a mid-range phone. It is powered by the Snapdragon 730 chipset and supports 30W VOOC 4.0. However, it is not yet made available in India.

All this is still a rumour. Oppo Reno S could well be the Oppo Reno Ace with slightly updated hardware or the Reno Ace itself that may launch as Reso S in markets outside China.

Did Realme accidentally start serving ads on ColorOS 60 Turns out, its not the only one

After gunning for Xiaomi’s throat for serving ads in its budget smartphones, Realme is now reportedly pushing ads in the Realme 1 after the new ColorOS update. A few users took to Twitter soon after the update was pushed out to complain about ads in their UI, in a way that’s similar to how Xiaomi also shows ads. Later, Realme CMO India, Francis Wong tweeted it was an error on their part and withdrew the feature from the devices.

Hey @C4ETech @C4EAsh @sharmajitech @RedmiIndia Device: Realme 1, beta firmware.. so they told they don't sell ads in the launch event but the question is untill when?? pic.twitter.com/sDUrAlimTM

— Supratim Dey (@Supratim96) October 23, 2019

Ads were popping up on ColorOS version CPH1861EX_11_C.45 that was pushed out with the latest October 2019 security patch. The ads are showing up in system apps like the download manager, and even as pop-ups on the home screen. The update added an option to ‘Get Reccommendations’ in the Settings App, which now have been taken down.

Users also reported the Realme U1 receiving ads on the UI after the latest RMX1831EX_11_C.15 update, but we could not independently confirm it since there were no screenshots of the same shared by users.

To clear the confusion, there is no ads. A system error from a beta software version. That's it.

— Francis Wang (@FrancisRealme) October 23, 2019

After users started complaining about ads in their smartphones, CMO of Realme India, Francis Wong first claimed it was showing up only on the beta version of the update. But after people claimed it’s on the stable version, Wong replied it’s a “system error from a beta software version.” Did an unwanted beta feature accidentally make its way to the stable version? More importantly, if it was indeed in the beta version, was Realme testing ads in their UI and planning for a wider rollout in the future? Let’s hope not.

Realme has consistently promised its fast-growing user base it will never show ads in the UI, something that the company likes to point out about Redmi smartphones from time to time.

The new update for the Realme 1 introduces system-wide dark mode, the October 2019 security patch, changes in the quick settings option, app cloning support and Digital Wellbeing support that Google has now made mandatory for all OEMs to offer in their smartphones.

Realme and Xiaomi not the only one

Guys vivo is also showing ads@stufflistings @AndroidSaint @Vivo_India pic.twitter.com/i9k3h6zQKB

— Smarty Abid (@abidshah271210) October 8, 2019

Color os is also showing ads in notification from colors os pre installed app called app market on my realme 3 pro. @realmemobiles @geekyranjit @MadhavSheth1 pic.twitter.com/yNZpreySam

— Ayan Basu (@AyanBsu) August 25, 2019

While most of the backlash is aimed towards Xiaomi for admitting to pushing ads in MIUI as part of their revenue stream, they’re not the only one throwing ads on the face of users. Samsung has been showing ads through the lock screen for quite some time, especially in its budget M-series and A-series smartphones, as part of a tie-up with ‘Glance’, a content platform that specialises in showing customised content to users. Vivo and Oppo phones also do the same through other third-party content providers. Furthermore, most of the Chinese OEMs throw up ads in the notification center, so much so, that it often becomes difficult to find out the notification that you were looking for in the first place.

So is it fair to demand only Xiaomi to withdraw apps from its UI while the rest of the smartphone brands are left alone in their quest to make a quick buck through invasive ads that depend on your smartphone usage to tailor the ads the system thinks is useful for you?

Samsung Galaxy S10 to receive second Android 10 based One UI 20 beta soon

It has been two weeks since Samsung launched the One UI 2.0 beta based on Android 10 and now, the company is about to release the second beta to fix the first batch of bugs. The latest development comes as a hidden hint in the changelog of the Samsung Video Library app. The app says that it supports Galaxy S10 phones running the 2nd beta version of One UI 2.0. The update could roll out as soon as tomorrow, alongside the debut of One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy Note10 lineup.

According to SamMobile, the One UI 2.0 beta could be expanded to more markets including Poland, France, Spain, India, UK and China. Further, Samsung is updating some of its apps separately for Android 10, and Samsung Video Library is one such app. It has a separate changelog for those on Android Pie. The quick development sounds promising and a stable release may roll out by the end of this year.

The One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 brings Google’s navigation gestures to the phones. While Samsung has not removed its own take on navigation gestures, it has added Google’s way to navigate the phone so users can choose whatever they are comfortable with. One UI 2.0 also comes equipped with a new shortcut and gesture for enabling One-handed mode.

One UI 2.0 comes with a new camera UI. Camera modes are no longer available above the shutter button. Apart from Photo, Video, Live Focus and Live Focus Video, all other modes are grouped together in the More section. Samsung has also rolled out a new screen recording feature from the Galaxy Note10 to other devices with One UI 2.0.

Moreover, with One UI 2.0 Samsung is also adding focus mode to digital wellbeing.

India-bound Realme 5s gets certified, Realme fitness band in the works

Realme, which recently launched the Realme XT smartphone in India at Rs 15,999, is preparing to bring more devices to the country. According to a recent report by NashvilleChatterClass, a new smartphone called Realme 5s has just been certified for India and Thailand, which means it could be launched in the two countries shortly. What’s more, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth has dropped a hint in a recent video that suggests the introduction of a Realme fitness band in the market soon.

The Realme 5s, which was hitherto referred to as RMX1925, is expected to sit between the Realme 5 and Realme 5 Pro when it’s launched in India. According to the report, its final model name was revealed in the certification issued by Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The certification issued by  India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) only mentions the codename RMX1925. Unfortunately, the two certifications don’t reveal the specifications of the upcoming Realme 5s.

Go straight to 05:36:00 in the video

Because the Realme 5 features a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen, and the Realme 5 Pro, a 6.3-inch unit, we expect the Realme 5s to sport a display of a similar size. The phone could be powered by either a Snapdragon 600 or 700 series chipset from Qualcomm with up to 6GB (or even 8GB) of RAM. Like its brethren, the Realme 5s is expected to run ColorOS 6.1 based on Android 9 Pie. But since none of these details have been confirmed by an official source, we suggest you take them with a pinch of salt until we get solid information.

It appears Realme is also planning to bring a Xiaomi Mi Band-rivalling fitness band to the country sometime soon. In the eleventh episode of Realme’s ‘#AskMadhav’ video series, company CEO Madhav Sheth is seen saying, “I can just give you a hint: if you’re a fitness enthusiast, time to get fitter, guys.” Apart from this cryptic line that hints at a fitness band from Realme, Sheth is also seen giving a coy ‘Why not?’ nod to the idea of a VOOC-supported power bank.

It lets users pick the dark mode appearance between two options - Dim and Lights out. ‘Dim’ refers to  Twitter’s existing dark mode in the stable app, whereas the ‘Lights out’ mode is new. Lights out mode lets users switch the interface to a true-black tone. It is said to help curb power consumption on phones with OLED displays. You can see the difference between Dim and Lights out mode below.

The OLED-friendly Lights out dark mode for Twitter’s Android app is rolling out to users with the latest version of the app, which is 8.18.0. One can quickly toggle on/off the dark mode on Twitter by tapping on the light bulb icon at the bottom of the slide-out menu. It can be accessed from the home screen by swiping right or tapping on one’s profile picture.

Many replies to Twitter’s official announcement indicate that Lights Out hasn’t reached most Android phones yet. However, for those of you who have received the new Lights Out mode, you can enable it by heading over to the Settings and privacy > Display and sound menu. There is a new sub-menu called “Dark mode appearance,” which contains two options - Dim and Lights out. If you need to enable the true-black tone mode, select Lights out.

NASA successfully conducts all-female spacewalk, posts plenty of selfies

The first-ever all-female spacewalk is finally in the books. NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir stepped out into space from the International Space Station last Friday morning (October 18) to fix a broken battery charging unit on the station’s exterior structure. The spacewalk, which lasted 7 hours, 17 minutes, ended as a success for the crew aboard the space station. What’s more, the two astronauts returned to the station with a stack of interesting selfies.

According to NASA’s update, the two astronauts were successful in replacing a battery charge-discharge unit (BCDU) on the space station’s exterior walls on Friday. The BCDU is responsible for regulating the charge in the batteries that collect and distribute solar power to the orbiting lab’s systems, explains NASA. The newly installed unit is reportedly working as expected. The broken unit will be sent back to Earth during the next SpaceX Dragon resupply mission for analysis.

Both Koch and Meir posted photos taken before, after, and during their spacewalk on their official Twitter accounts. In addition, NASA published their selfies and photos taken through their space cameras. The Daily Mail raked up about fifty of those images in its recent report. Friday’s spacewalk marks Meir’s first EVA (extra-vehicular activity) and Koch’s fourth. When asked if another such spacewalk involving only women would happen anytime soon during a live interview, the astronauts said they didn’t know.

The all-female spacewalk was supposed to take place in March this year but was cancelled by NASA at the last minute owing to unavailability of spacesuits. Koch was originally slated to walk with Anne McClain but ended up sharing her first EVA with Nick Hague. McClain got her chance to walk out into space with David Saint-Jacques later in April. You can read more about that here.
