Watchout Netflix, Disney+ launching in India via Hotstar on April 3
Disney+ was originally set to launch in India via Hotstar on March 29 but is now officially launching on April 3. The information comes from Hotstar's Twitter account. The Tweet reads, “This is not a drill! The biggest Super Heroes, magical stories for everyone, exclusive Disney+ Originals and all that you've been waiting for are (finally) landing on Disney+ Hotstar. 3rd April. Really.” According to TechCrunch, the subscription fee for the service will go up from Rs 999 per annum to Rs 1499 per annum. Hopefully, we will get to see a bump in the streaming quality as well, but that is something we will know when the service is publicly available.
TechCrunch goes on to say that there is a more affordable plan priced at Rs 399. This plan will include movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along with live sporting events and a catalogue of movies and shows along with Hotstar originals. The 399 plan will not include Disney+ Originals. The Rs 1499 plan, however, will offer customers content from partners including HBO, Fox, and Showtime. So if you are one that likes watching shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective and more, then the Rs 1499 plan is the one for you to consider.
Disney+ Hotstar was expected to launch in India on March 29, but it looks like this was delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We still aren't sure about whether the service will finally start streaming in 4K and HDR or whether it will give users the option of profiles or increase the number of simultaneous streams. We will get you the answers to all these questions soon.
In the meantime, know that the Amazon Prime subscription costs Rs 999 per annum, giving you access to Prime Videos, Prime Music and Even Prime Delivery. Netflix has a bunch of plans ranging from the mobile-only Rs 199 per month plan all the way up to Rs 799 per month, giving you access to 4 simultaneous playbacks and quality up to 4K and HDR. You can read more about Netflix’s subscriptions here.

Xiaomi to hike prices of smartphones after 6 percent increase in GST on mobiles
Xiaomi smartphones are set to get more expensive, and the company is putting the blame on the Indian government for it. Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi MD announced on Twitter that because of the hike in GST in smartphones, the company has no choice but to hike the prices, keeping its 5% profit philosophy in mind.
GST on mobile phones saw a 50 per cent hike from 12 per cent in the last financial year to 18 per cent from April 1, 2020, onward. With Xiaomi’s philosophy of only making a 5 per cent margin on its hardware, the company has had to increase the prices of Mi and Redmi smartphones, as explained by Manu Kumar Jain on Twitter.

YouTube streaming limited to 480p in India by Google
As the world grapples with social distancing, and India goes into what feels like its nth day of lockdown, YouTube has announced that they’re going to be changing the playback quality of the video playback to standard definition (SD) or more commonly known as 480p. The decision comes after Google observed a major uptake in the number of people streaming YouTube videos throughout the day.
The move comes in the wake of the fact that more people are now stuck at home, whether working or not and hence, streaming more content as a means of passing the time. Across Europe, all streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had reduced the default streaming quality as the infrastructure came under heavy load. Google says that the kind of uptake in traffic they’re seeing on YouTube “won't break the internet,” but the company is limiting the stream quality anyway to reduce the strain on ISP and telcos.
In India, YouTube streaming has been capped at 480p, but only for mobile devices. Even if you’re connected to a home Wi-Fi network, your mobile device will not stream YouTube content in quality higher than 480p. This is strange because you can stream YouTube content in up to 4K (content willing) if you’re on a computer. In fact, if you choose to forego the YouTube app and use the browser on your phone instead, you can get a slightly higher quality stream at 720p.
According to a report by Bloomberg, there’s been a steady rise of 20 percent in online streaming since the Coronavirus outbreak. This has started to put a strain on many countries’ internet infrastructure, which has led to this move by Google.

Heres how you can play Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from home
While all of Niantic’s games on smartphones encourage gamers to go outdoors and explore their world, the lockdown imposed upon various countries because of the coronavirus epidemic has made the game developer take a U-turn and introduce features that allow players to stay at home and play Niantic games.
The game developer is behind two popular AR-based gaming titles — Pokemon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Both these titles are being adapted to support stay-at-home gaming since it’s no longer safe to venture outside and play these games.
Some of the new features introduced to ensure you stay at home while playing includes the following —
- Niantic’s Adventure Sync function will now track indoor steps like running on a treadmill, cleaning the house or making other indoor movements. - Niantic games will encourage in-game virtual meetups and let players stay in touch without having to meet in real life. - You can soon be able to team up with friends and take on raid battles in Pokemon GO from your home. - Apart from that, Niantic is also reimagining live events (remember the Pokemon GO Fest which ended in a disaster?) to let players feel the excitement from their homes. More details will be revealed about this in the coming weeks. - Lastly, Niantic is encouraging people to virtually visit and share their memories of their favourite real-world places until they can go and visit them in person.
What's new in Pokemon GO?That’s not all. Pokemon GO has received a bunch of new features that shouldn’t encourage you to head outdoors. That includes a new form of gameplay called Go Battle which can be played from anywhere in the world without having to go outdoors. Walking requirements have been reduced from 3KM to zero. There are deeply discounted incense and Poke Balls to let people catch more of them without travelling too far. Niantic has also increased storage to let people send and receive more gifts.
What's new in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has not been left alone either. You will now see more content around you on the map. So expect more Spell Energy, rare potions ingredients and other iconic Harry Potter content near you to help you make progress. Potion tuning has also been adjusted to have Foundables spawn directly at their house. Gifts will offer more helpful resources and you can open more gifts each day.

Coronavirus effect: Delhi University moves towards online education by integrating Google Classroom and Hangouts
As the Coronavirus rips through India and with the entire country in a state of lockdown, major services and institutions remain closed or partially functioning. With a large number of people moving their work online, it was only natural that educational institutions also shifted their focus to a more flexible, digital platform. Academic institutions all over the country are making their way online, offering classes over the internet. Delhi University, among others, has now made the shift towards digital learning and even integrating Google Services to the University’s educational systems.
This shift in society has brought about the innovative use of technology as a way to communicate and learn. As we move towards an online-based society for the next two to three weeks, services like Zoom and Skype are also finding their way into the educational system, offering video-conferencing and other options to connect teachers with their students.
According to a report by NDTV, teachers in Delhi University will find the integrated services on the three-dot icon on the top-right corner on their University accounts.
The two main services used as of now are Google Classroom and Hangouts. Classroom functions much like a normal classroom, except online, where teachers can share documents such as pfd, doc, ppt and more. They can also create assignments, conduct tests online and can even create multiple classrooms as per their daily schedule. It takes a little work to get things going but it looks like the service will now be used as an educational tool in DU.
Hangouts functions much like a live video conference between teachers and students with video sharing options and more. It’s simple and works in conjunction with Classroom for a more comprehensive educational experience. Delhi University has also provided a set of tutorials for teachers and students just to make sure that all the bases are covered.
This is the right step for educators as the Coronavirus outbreak has forced us to look for more innovative and cost-saving methods for our society to keep functioning and moving towards an online education model is the correct move.

OnePlus Z could be the official name of the alleged OnePlus 8 Lite
While the OnePlus 8 series is likely to debut next month, the company is expected to release a lighter variant of the devices soon after. It was tipped to be named OnePlus 8 Lite. However, the latest development claims that the OnePlus X is all set to be succeeded by the OnePlus Z. The information comes from tipster Max Weinbach who leaked plenty of information about the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Z Flip before their official announcement.
As per the tipster, OnePlus is soon going to revamp the older OnePlus X under a new series. Further, he revealed that the phone could arrive with the name “OnePlus Z”, and not as OnePlus 8 Lite.
The OnePlus Z is tipped to sport a 90Hz refresh rate 6.4-inch AMOLED display. OnePlus is said to use a MediaTek chipset for the first time. It may be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 SoC. The device is said to come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.
As for the optics, the leaked renders have shown a triple rear camera setup. It may sport a 48MP primary camera alongside a 16MP and 12MP sensors for ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lens respectively. The OnePlus Z could pack a 4000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. Further, it is rumored to be made available in two variants: 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB.
It may be priced at 400 GBP, which is around 511 USD and approximately Rs 37,500. That is actually a high asking price for a Lite model especially when the OnePlus 7T is now selling for Rs 34,999 in India. However, it is highly likely for OnePlus to price it lower in India than the international markets.
According to previous rumours, OnePlus Z will be made available in India and other markets by July 2020. Hence, it may launch after the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, which are rumored to be launched in mid-April.

According to the tipster, OnePlus 8 Pro will feature a 48MP Sony IMX 689 primary sensor with an f/1.78 aperture + a 48MP Sony IMX ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view + an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom + a 5MP colour filter. The camera is said to pack new features like new night portrait mode, “3-HDR” video, cinematic effects and better OIS.
As per previous leaks, OnePlus 8 Pro will feature a 6.78-inch Super AMOLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Further, the smartphone is likely to come with 8GB/12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB/256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. On the front may lie a 16MP selfie shooter.
The smartphone will pack a 4510mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. This time around, OnePlus is likely to add 30W wireless fast charging support as well as 3W reverse wireless charging. The phone will be IP68 rated and come in blue, black and green colour options.
On the AI Benchmark, the OnePlus 8 Pro is listed below the Honor 9X Pro, Nova 5, Nova 5i Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10 5G and a couple of other models. Moreover, it is listed above the Google Pixel 4, ASUS ROG 2, Mi 10 Pro 5G and the Realme X2 Pro.

Coronavirus effect: WhatsApp to limit videos on status to 15 seconds in India to save bandwidth
With over a billion users around the world, WhatsApp is easily one of the most used messaging apps today. And, in the midst of a worldwide lockdown to curb the menace of the Coronavirus outbreak, the usage has certainly spiked up. Indians, in particular, love using the app to stay in touch, send forwards, share memes and videos. That also leads to consuming a lot of bandwidth, something that we are being told is constrained with so many people staying home and tuning in to streaming services and playing online games.
Previously, YouTube, Netflix and other streaming websites agreed to cut down their video quality to free up more bandwidth. Now, WhatsApp is also joining the league by limiting status videos to 15 seconds. You were allowed to post a 30-second video up on your status previously, but now WhatsApp has cut it down to just 15 seconds to reduce bandwidth consumption.
The information was shared by the folks over at WABetaInfo on Twitter. The tweet read, “You can no longer send videos to WhatsApp status if they are longer than 16 seconds: only videos having a duration of 15 seconds will be allowed. This is happening in India and it’s probably an initiative to reduce the traffic on the server infrastructures.”
ANNOUNCEMENT: You can no longer send videos to WhatsApp Status if they are longer than 16 seconds: only videos having a duration of 15 seconds will be allowed. This is happening in India and it's probably an initiative to reduce the traffic on the server infrastructures.
— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) March 28, 2020The new update will impact all users in India, no matter if you are using a stable version or a beta version. But it’s expected that this change is only temporary till the lockdown lifts and strain on the bandwidth comes down.
Just to refresh, WhatsApp Status is basically Instagram Stories for the platform. It replaced text-based status messages (they’re still there but with a different name) to let users upload photos and videos to share with friends. The content disappears automatically after 24 hours. And by the looks of it, if cutting down the video length to 15 seconds will let many others enjoy the fruits of the internet. It’s just a small luxury to give up in the larger scheme of things.

Coronavirus effect: Wistron Corp speeding up move of iPhone production out of China to India and Vietnam
With the world turned upside down by the coronavirus, it looks like even some of the biggest companies and manufacturers are facing their fair share of problems. Apple being one of them. One of Apple’s manufacturing partners, Winstrol Corp., has said that half the company's capacity would be located outside China in about a year’s time. The company had already started moving production out of China since the trade war between the US and China reached a boiling point last year. The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has sped up the process.
Other companies such as Foxconn, Inventec Corp., and Pegatron Corp could also end up making decisions that could effectively change the supply chain in the long term. Wistron Corp. is actually looking at India as the next manufacturing hub, as well as looking at Vietnam and Mexico as alternatives. The company has set aside a billion dollars for this particular expansion.
Pegatron is also looking at expanding it’s manufacturing sites to other countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and even India as potential countries. The iPhone assembler also said that it has purchased land in northern Taiwan and intends to set up a plant there as well. Even the mighty Foxconn is looking at diversifying their manufacturing sites as well. The folly of placing all your eggs in one basket is now coming back to bite these companies.
Who knows how the virus will affect the world in the coming years but even in just a few short months, the Coronavirus outbreak has shown us that we are teetering on the edge of civilization.

Coronavirus effect: Google wont play an April Fools Day joke this year
Since 2004, Google has been pranking the world every year with creative jokes, websites and fake product launches keeping us guessing whether the company is serious or joking. After all, the tech giant did launch Gmail on April 1, 2004 offering users 1GB of storage space, a feature unheard of in the past. Before that, between 1998 and 2004, we got the occasional April fools prank here and there. However, the company will not be parking us this year, breaking its 16-year streak and honestly, that makes us very sad. This information comes from an email obtained by Business Insider.
The email reads, “This year, we’re going to take the year off from [April Fools’ Day] out of respect for all those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one. We’ve already stopped any centralized April Fools efforts but realize there may be smaller projects within teams that we don’t know about. Please suss out those efforts and make sure your teams pause on any jokes they may have planned — internally or externally.”
Following Google, there were a lot of other companies that took to the internet to make jokes on April Fools day. You can check out the April fools jokes played by companies in 2019 here.

World Health Organization to launch Coronavirus COVID-19 tips app for iOS and Android
The Coronavirus COVID-19 global cases keep rising along with the death toll. People are not only battling the virus but also misinformation spreading about the disease. A lot of organizations including Google, Microsoft and more have taken steps to ensure the right kind of information is being circulated, educating people about the virus. The government of India has also launched a WhatsApp chatbot that provides relevant information about the virus and you can check out the details of the chatbot here.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is also launching an iOS, Android and Web App to educate people and provide tips in regards to the Coronavirus. Aside from telling you to wash your hands and maintain social distancing, the app will essentially give you the same information found on the WHO WhatsApp Chatbot. According to 9to5Google, the app “was originally proposed by a team of volunteer experts that have formed what they’re calling the “WHO Covid App Collective.” The team consists of former Google and Microsoft employees as well as WHO advisors and ambassadors, along with other industry experts”.
According to the source, the WHO MyHealth app will offer notifications and information specific to your location. So we can expect some India specific information to come via the app. The app is also expected to have “self-triage” tools to help diagnose whether the symptoms you have match those of COVID-19.
According to 9to5Google, “On an even grander scale, there are ambitions for those who have been directly affected by COVID-19 to offer the WHO with their Android or iPhone location history in an effort to perform “contact tracing,” to better understand the spread of the virus. However, given the obvious privacy concerns with sharing in-depth location history, it remains to be seen whether this feature will actually launch.”
Because of the global pandemic of COVID-19, a lot of technology events like Microsoft Build, GDC, MWC, Google I/O and many more have been cancelled. You can check out the complete list of cancelled events here. A lot of telecom and broadband operators like Reliance, MTNL, BSNL and more are doing their part to ensure that those working from home in this time of crisis can do so effectively and efficiently.

Googles true wireless Pixel Buds expected to launch in the first half of 2020
Google Showed off their true wireless Pixel Buds in 2019 and they were expected to launch in the first half of 2020. Since Google I/O 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak it was speculated that the headphones would be delayed. However, information circulating the internet suggests that they could launch in the first half of 2020. According to 9to5Google, the Google Pixel Buds have passed through the FCC listing. Every consumer electronic that launches in the US must pass through the FCC certification before being made available to the public. Two listings have appeared on the website, G1007, and G1008. According to the source, “These model numbers could correspond to the left and right earbuds, or the earbuds jointly and the charging case separately. Both are rated with the same Bluetooth frequencies, though it’s possible that the case could communicate directly with a paired phone”.
Coming to the features of the Pixel Buds, the headset has hands-free access to the Google Assistant, which can be used to send texts, get directions or use google translate. The new buds are also said to feature long-range Bluetooth connection that can connect with a device up to three rooms away when inside or across a football field when outside. This is similar to most Bluetooth headphones though. Additionally, the earphones are sweat and water-resistant.
According to Google, the new truly wireless Pixel Buds can deliver up to five hours of audio playback on a single charge and up to 24 hours with the wireless charging case. Rather than being wider, the carry case for the device is taller, similar to the Apple AirPods. The new Google Pixel Buds also come equipped with a Spatial Vent for picking up environment sound and enabling some level of awareness. It’s volume also dynamically adjusts, based on the ambient noise and it comes with beamforming mics that are said to pick up voice while on a call clearly. Coming to the price, the Pixel Buds will be available for $179 (Rs 12,807 approx). It will be offered in Clearly White, Oh So Orange, Quite Mint and Almost Black colour options. There is no information on whether the new Pixel Buds will come to India.

Coronavirus effect: Microsoft not worried about Xbox Series X production but worried about demand
In a recent interview with CNBC, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “On the supply side we are getting back on rails.” He said this in response to the question “whether Microsoft would be able to deliver later this year certain products it had promised before COVID-19 took hold, like new Surface devices and a revamped Xbox gaming console”. The new Xbox Series X will be manufactured in China, a country that has started recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are many countries all over the world, where the virus is gravely affecting the economy. What will affect Microsoft's hardware including the upcoming surface devices and the Xbox Series X is the demand. He says, "what happens in the United States, in Europe, in other developed markets around the demand side of this going forward." Put simply, Microsoft may be able to produce enough hardware, but will the demand be enough?
The COVID-19 pandemic has put the global economy on a backfoot and while the governments of various nations are doing the best they can to maintain economic sustenance, there is no denying that that business, profits, consumer spending, etc. will be gravely affected. Since the upcoming console is expected to be priced higher than the industry norm due to the hardware under the hood, it is possible that the console may not sell as well as Microsoft hopes, initially at least.
Another thing to note is that Microsoft has committed its exclusive games to be on both the Series X and Xbox One family of consoles for 1 year at least. So there is little reason for one to invest in the new hardware on day 1.
Microsoft may need to come up with some enticing offers to make the new console a must-have, this is apart from the specifications, where we know the console is a beast. Microsoft has not only revealed the look of the console and the controller that one will get with it, but has also given us a deep dive into the hardware specifications of the console. You can read about the specifications of the console here.
Sony has also given gamers a deep dive into the specifications of the console and the new controller that will come with it but hasn’t revealed the look of the console yet. You can see how the PS5 compares to the Xbox Series X here.
According to analysts, the Coronavirus would need to "last through June" in order to affect the launch of the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5. You can read more about that here.

Coronavirus effect: Motorola stops manufacturing, shuts offices, closes service centers till April 14
With India under total lockdown and major districts of the country showing COVID-19 positive cases, the smartphone industry has come to a staggering stop at least for the time being. It will get difficult to buy a new smartphone or even get it repaired since most OEMs have halted production in their factories and closed service centres.
Motorola is the latest brand to issue a statement regarding the same. The Lenovo-owned smartphone brand introduced the Moto Razr, it’s first foldable smartphone a week or so back. However, obeying government directives, Motorola has stopped operations at its manufacturing plants in Tamil Nadu starting March 23rd. The company has also mandated all its employees across multiple offices in India to work from home till April 14.
"Safety of our employees and their families is of utmost importance to us and we are 100% compliant with all relevant guidelines issued by the various state governments. We have stopped operations at our manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, starting March 23rd. Further, all employees across our various offices in India have been advised to exercise a mandatory ‘Work From Home’ policy till 14th April. Along with this, we have issued strict guidelines and advisory for all precautions to be taken by them and their respective families,” Motorola said in a statement.
Furthermore, Motorola has also shut operations in its service centres and retail stores. However, Motorola said they have enough stocks of the newly announced Moto Razr, but the delivery of the smartphone might get delayed since Flipkart and other e-commerce companies are prioritising deliveries of essentials only. Flipkart is still listing most Motorola smartphones to be available to buy but delivery may happen at a later date, possibly after the lockdown lifts.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the entire nation is in a 21-day lockdown where people have been asked to stay at home. E-commerce website, Flipkart has announced that it will suspend services temporarily, however, it doesn't provide any clarity on when one can expect the services to resume. Logging onto Flipkarts home page, one can read, “Hello Fellow Indians, We are temporarily suspending our services. Your needs have always been our priority, and our promise is that we will be back to serve you, as soon as possible. These are difficult times, times like no other. Never before, have communities stayed apart to stay safe! Never before, has being at home meant helping the nation! We urge you to Stay Home and Stay Safe! We will get there. And we will get through. Together.”
The above statement is in line with what the government has requested, the closure of all nonessential services. There is no information on when Flipkart will resume its services. Tinder makes Passport free, allows everyone to swipe anywhere in the world
With the country going under lockdown, many businesses have suffered great losses. The impact is felt not just in the offline space, but online as well. One such impacted business model is online dating, in particular, location-based online dating. Since people are not going out anymore, Tinder feels isn’t a good enough reason for them to get off the dating game. So, the company is making its Passport feature free for everyone till April 30.
Tinder said that the Passport feature will become free for everyone starting next week and remain that way till April 30th. The reason behind the move, according to Match Group CEO Shar Dubey is it will give the Tinder community access to “the technology to share, learn and listen to those that are experiencing this same situation in different geographies during an unprecedented period of isolation.”
By using Passport, Tinder users can change their current location to anywhere in the world, opening up the potential for matches across the globe. With many countries enforcing curfews and lockdowns, Passport could be a great way for users to connect with others around the world to share what’s happening in their respective areas.
The rampant spread of Coronavirus worldwide has caused major disruptions across so many facets of daily life. With everyone stuck indoors, people are streaming more, causing severe bandwidth issues in parts of the world. Europe had already requested streaming services to lower the quality to SD so that the infrastructure could handle the excess load. With Tinder offering Passport for free, it is yet another thing for people to distract themselves with. Do note that the feature isn’t free yet, and will be so starting next week, and will remain free till April 30th.

Indian government reportedly working on CoWin-20 app to track Covid-19 patients: Report
The Indian government is reportedly working on a smartphone app to keep the spread of coronavirus under check. The app is called CoWin-20 and is currently in beta testing before launching for both iOS and Android devices.
According to a report by Network18, the CoWin-20 app will rely on smartphone location services to track people and stop the spread of coronavirus. The app will also reportedly record the user’s travel history to determine if they’re at risk of catching the virus as well as the people they might have come in contact with.
The app will also highlight coronavirus testing centres nearby and quarantine sites. You can get the latest advisories, guidelines and information about the Covid-19 outbreak. Users will also be alerted on the latest updates via the Indian government.
The inspiration behind using an app to track potential patients infected with the virus might have come from a similar app being in Singapore where the government is also relying on high-tech surveillance to keep the coronavirus spread under check. Apart from also locating patients who tested positive on a map, it also alerts nearby people who may come in contact with the patient by using Bluetooth.
The report claims the app will be launched in the next few days. The APK of the app is reportedly being distributed to a select few people. iOS users can also download the app by sharing their devices UDIDs with the National Informatics Center.
Recently, the Indian Government also launched a “MyGov Corona” help desk on WhatsApp which is basically a chatbot that will help you out with potential symptoms, guidelines and advisories on WhatsApp itself.
