Xbox Series X next-gen gameplay reveal event set for May 7
Microsoft has taken to Twitter to announce their next Xbox Series X event. The event, which will be a digital-only event, will take place on May 7 at 8:30 PM India time. Microsoft has tweeted, “You want to see games for the Xbox Series X? We want to show you games for the Xbox Series X. Check out First Look next-gen gameplay from our global developer's partners within #InsideXbox on Thursday, May 7 at 8am PT.” Since the tweet reads, “gameplay from our global developer's partners”, we think this will be the platform where Microsoft will show off what other developers are working on that will make an appearance on the next-generation consoles. As for first-party games, we think the reveal will be down the line for what Microsoft’s 16 first-party Xbox studios have to offer. It has been confirmed that gameplay for the recently revealed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be shown off at Microsoft’s May event. Speaking of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the game saw the official unveiling of a gameplay trailer and you can check out details of the game here. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be released for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 towards the end of 2020.
At E3 2019 and E3 2018, Microsoft made it a point to show off a lot of games during their press conference to cement the fact that they were committed to the Xbox and gaming. We think the upcoming May event will be filled with gameplay reveal after reveal from new and existing games. It is possible we get to see more details on the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 among other games.
Microsoft has been front and centre about giving gamer information about the upcoming console, the Xbox Series X. Microsoft took the stage at the Game Awards 2019 to announce the name and the look of the console along with a trailer that showed off Hellblade Senua’s Saga. In 2020, Microsoft gave us an in-depth look at the specifications and build of the console.
Sony, on the other hand, has only shown off the PS5 controller dubbed the DualSense and revealed the specifications of the PS5. It makes sense that Sony is quiet about the PS5 as they still have 2 big games set to launch in 2020 - The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. You can read more about the new release date of the two games here.

SoloCoin goes on to win at EUvsVirus hackathon after winning CODE19 in India
SoloCoin is an app that encourages people to stay at home during the pandemic, with reward tokens, which can be exchanged for discounts on services that are useful during the lockdown, such as Netflix and Swiggy. The app came in third at the CODE19 hackathon organised in India on April 10, with the winners announced 4 days ago. The CODE19 hackathon was an effort to quickly find technological solutions for the challenges faced by the Covid-19 outbreak and the following nationwide lockdown. On April 30, there was more good news for the app, as it went on to win first place in the “other” subcategory of the “Social & Political Cohesion” category of the pan European EUvsVirus hackathon.
The founder of the app is India based Arbob Mehmood, a 22 year old who has previously founded Bramble. The main product of Bramble is an API that allows developers to reward gamers in cryptocurrencies for playing their games. The experience Mehmood gained from working with Bramble was used to work on SoloCoin. Specifically, a similar gamification system was used to reward people for staying at home, instead of playing the game. SoloCoin is an app that gamifies social distancing and rewards people with SoloCoins, a token currency within the application, that can be exchanged for discounts of services such as Amazon, Netflix, Swiggy, Zomato and other services that are required for staying at home. Currently, the coupons offered on the app are sourced through third party affiliates, but the team is working on integrated these coupons natively.
Building a team and onboarding partnersMehmood is an avid reader of our magazine, and we reached out to him to learn more about the application. One of the things that we noticed was that signing up for the app has a waitlist, and it has not been released just yet. If you are interested in the app, you can sign up for the waitlist here. One of our first questions was, why does the app have a waitlist in the place? Mehmood replied, “The app is still in development. It’s in private beta right now and is only accessible via an invite-only system that too within our community. We are planning on launching this app next month globally so we want some people to try it firsthand and give feedback so that we can release a relatively bug-free app.”
One of the effective ways in which the app, and the invite system is marketed and propagated, is through social media influencers. We asked Mehmood how the experience of working with influencers was. He responded, “I had worked with influencers in my previous startups, so, it was not new to me. We also have a community member with lots of influencer connections that helped us in connecting with them. The primary thing to know while talking with influencers is their charge because they negotiate way too much. Now, we were lucky here because we are an open-source startup tackling the COVID crisis so many of them agreed to do some of the marketing for free. Influencers can get you a great RoI if you choose them carefully according to your target market and have a way with negotiations.”
One of the reasons why the app is so successful, is that Mehmood put together a really good team to work on it. This team includes many people from around the world, who are really enthusiastic about the idea of the app. We asked him about the team and how it came together. Mehmood responded, “When I had the idea, I was building it on Python's Beeware toolkit which ports python code to a native mobile app. But it's features were limited. Then, I heard about COVID hackathons happening across the country. So, I started to scout for members across hackathons. Since the idea was innovative and impactful, many amazing people joined my team. then the team decided to make it on native Android and iOS directly for better usability and support. We have a group of open-source collaborators from around the world including startup founders & CXOs, people from IITs, BITS, Stanford, Microsoft, Uber, Github, Neuro-Researchers, and more among our community. The core team has 7 people in it with 20+ contributors across the different domains. The community count is 300+. The product is built 100% remotely.”
Apart from a great team, Mehmood has managed to onboard a large number of partners in a remarkably short span of time. We asked him how he achieved this, to which Mehmood said, “cold emails. Linkedin messages to senior employees and twitter DMs. basically, hustling our way through the partner contact. Our community members have worked very hard to get partners on board, however, we are still waiting for big guys like Amazon, Zomato and Swiggy to respond and officially come onboard (The coupons you’re seeing on our app page is basically affiliate coupons from other coupon websites.) but other big brands like Yatra’s CEO, 1MG, FitIndian, etc. have showed interest in us and are looking to integrate their services on our app. Again, a sense of contribution towards something bigger has helped us a lot in the exposure of our product. Brands genuinely want to join such noble cause and do their part in stopping the spread of COVID. So, I’d like to take this opportunity and invite potential partners who are reading this to join us, promote your services on our app, and help stop the spread of coronavirus.”
One of the things that really stood out to us was how awesome the UI was. We asked Mehmood about the process behind creating this aspect of the app. Part of the magic is continuous iterations based on user feedback. Mehmood responded, “we are an open-source, decentralized, community-based initiative. Brilliant People from all walks of life, around the world, have come together to make this app a success. Me and my teammate handle most of the design. I have great amount of experience in designing consumer and blockchain apps and my teammate Adesh Bhansali (a graduate from the Indian school of design and innovation) work on all the designs. I create a rough wireframe/mockup and he adds necessary colors and makes it more aesthetically pleasing to the users. Then we show the designs to the community and get feedback. Getting feedback is the most important part here since it helps us in getting different perspectives and ideas. Our primary goal with the design is to make our core features easily accessible and feel pleasing on the eyes so that people can interact with it more. And, after we’re done we finalize it and move it to frontend devs for final integration.”
One of the things that Mehmood pointed out to us, was that what really motivated people in using the app was not the money they got for discounts on products and services, but the knowledge that their efforts had in some way contributed to the global fight against the pandemic. We probed Mehmood on how he came to this realisation, and he said, “One thing I've noticed while building our product is the founder's vision and the potential impact of the said product is very important. When I first pitched the idea of SoloCoin, I was alone. But the idea was innovative and has never been done before. The vision I put to gamify social-distancing and help to stop the spread of COVID resonated with people and that helped us in getting amazing people with great skills from all over the world to voluntarily work on my idea without any financial incentive. I don’t think this would’ve have been possible if I had pitched a me-too idea or a less impactful idea in front of people. This is true for regular users and potential customers as well. There are many rewards app but the only reason we have received this much interest from the community and waitlist registration is that we were doing something that will help make the world a better place. We have learned that working towards something bigger is a much bigger reward than any discounts. With our app users had a sense of belonging and contribution towards a bigger cause. They are proud of it. And, it doesn’t hurt that by doing so, they can earn rewards and recognition in their social-circle.”
Future plansWe then asked Mehmood on what are his future plans for the app, now that SoloCoin has won a national level and an international hackathon. Mehmood replied, “Currently, our app is focused on the COVID-affected world and how it can help stop the spread of coronavirus. Our near-future plans are: Proximity-based social-distancing to track if the user in your proximity is infected or not, rewarding for good habits like washing hands, timely self-isolation, Yoga, etc. determining efficient/less crowded routes for commuting and avoiding people, giving users the possibility to chat with nearby quarantined people, map list of nearby available essential stores for groceries, medicines, etc and giving users the possibility to add a mask to their profile picture to tell people they are practicing social-distancing.”
We asked Mehmood what his plans for the app are once the pandemic is over. The answer was really interesting. The app that rewarded people for staying at home, will shift to reward people to coming together! Mehmood replied, “For the post-COVID world, We have identified many ideas on what we can do with our tech post-COVID. Our app can be used for concerts/stores, basically to gather people. The more they stay the more they earn. That way sponsors will get better revenue as well. Office spaces can use this (technology) to incentivize the employees to stay in longer to increased points (the longer they’re connected to the office wireless can be a marker). At the current stage, the app is used as a Social-distancing app with a home geo-fence. After COVID, we can increase the geo-fence to multiple locations like concerts, malls or local stores. Now if you think about it we're venturing into not a consumer app space, but rather the ad-tech space. Our app can now be at the forefront of hyperlocal based targeted ads, basically directly competing with Google's and Facebook's Pay Per Click.”
We then asked Mehmood to share with us, and other readers his personal journey with Digit as a reader of the magazine. Mehmood replied, “Digit has played a vital role in the development of my tech/startup mindset. I’m reading Digit since I was 13, mostly purchased from the nearest railway station. I used to read Chacha Chaudhary and Billoo a lot during those times. But one day while I was browsing for something different I encountered Digit. The shopkeeper recommended to me that it has computers and mobile phones in it. I loved computers and working on the computer since when I was 8 but never thought to do anything with it except for getting a job. Once I got the magazine I was hooked. I got into tech after reading amazing articles on digit. I realized how awesome career in tech can be. Not to mention the articles about tech entrepreneurs have motivated me to start my own tech startup and that led me to learn to program and founding my first startup at the age of 17.
I was fortunate enough that my parent have allotted the money for me to purchase two magazines each month - one digit and another Chip, every month. But let me tell you, digit was an expensive magazine for any 13 yr old at that time and buying directly from stores is not at all cheap. I used to eagerly wait for the 2nd date of every month for Digit to get to the store. However, I somehow convinced my parents to let me subscribe to the digit, and to this day I subscribe to it. (I, however, paused the subscription due to severe lack of time because of my startup and COVID, but expecting to resume soon) The things digit taught me about tech and the awesomeness in tech are priceless and I thank every digit member and their articles, which helped a simple boy from small town to put on a path to tech-entrepreneurship and help me reach where I am today. But, picture Abhi baaki hai mere dost. Much more amazing things to come as I’m still 22.”
We followed that up by asking Mehmood what his favorite sections were, to which he replied, “My favorite sections are: Robert’s Column (1st priority), Agent 001 (For recommendations and error fixing - I like to be called the Tech guy in my network.), the reviews (because not everyone in the tech has a better parameter to judge gadgets like you guys), Digit Diary and boo-man obviously (To get a different perspective of the world), the small article snippets on the top (much informative stuff there), DGT section (love moonshot products), and last but not the least, ANNIVERSARY EDITIONS.” Watch out for our next anniversary edition, which is right around the corner.

TikTok has the best quarter for any app, crosses the 2 billion downloads mark: Report
It looks like the popularity of TikTok isn’t going to slow down any time soon. According to a report by research and analytics firm, Sensor Tower, the app has been downloaded over 2 billion times globally on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This news comes a few months after the firm last reported that the app has been downloaded over 1.5 billion times. The report also notes that in Q1 2020, TikTok generated the most downloads for any app ever in a quarter with 315 million installs across Android and iOS. In fact, Google Play accounts for a majority of TikTok app downloads with 1.5 billion installs, or 75.5% of the total number. The Apple app Store generated 495.2 million downloads or 24.5%.
Of course, a lot of this has to do with the fact that most of the world is currently under lockdown due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. As such, many people are turning to their smartphones for entertainment as well as connecting with others.
“While TikTok was on the ascent before 2020, the app has hit new levels of popularity so far this year. Its record-breaking Q1 came during a global pandemic, leading in part to an increase in downloads, engagement, and revenue. The continuous rise of TikTok gives it an ever-bigger foundation to not only enjoy success for the short-term, but build for the long-term to keep competitors—both existing and emerging—at bay,” the report said.
Popularity of TikTok by CountrySensor Tower also noted that India has the most number of downloads by any country with 611 million lifetime downloads. This makes up 30.3% of all TikTok users. By comparison, China is placed seconds with 196.6 million, which makes up 9.7%. It should be noted that the version of TikTok in China is known as Douyin and does not account for installations from third-party Android Store in the country. The United States takes the third spot with 165 million installs, which is about 8.2%.
TikTok User spendThe report also notes that lifetime user spending in TikTok has grown to $456.7 million. It further adds that this amount is 2.5 times the $175 million it generated when it reached the 1.5 billion downloads mark. However, when it comes to spending money, India was not on the top three list with China taking the top spot by generating $331 million or 72.3%. The US and Great Britain took the second and third spot with users spending $86.5 million and $9 million respectively.
The popularity of TikTok is such that even Apple has decided to create an official account on the platform. However, this popularity does come with issues, The platform is host to a number of fake information, especially about the Coronavirus. TikTok has also taken into account minors using its platform has started offering improved parental controls.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series, Mi Note 10 Lite to launch today: Heres how to watch the live stream
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series, alongside the Mi Note 10 Lite is scheduled for a global launch in just a few hours from now. One part of the Redmi Note 9 series, the Note 9 Pro and Pro Max have already been announced in India but due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent nation-wide lockdown, the phones are yet to go on sale. The Indian government also currently prohibits e-commerce companies from shipping non-essential goods like mobile phones and laptops to consumers.
The Mi Note 10 Lite is a pared-down version of the Mi Note 10 that was launched back in November 2019 with a 108MP penta-camera setup. However, the latest rumours indicate that the Note 10 Lite could come with a 64MP primary camera. The Redmi Note 9 has also been leaked just hours before the official launch.
How to watch Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series launch eventXiaomi is hosting an online launch event for the Redmi Note 9 series and the Mi 10 Lite due to the COVID-19 crisis that has forced people to stay at home. The launch event is scheduled at 8 PM UTC (5:30 PM IST) and the event will be live-streamed on the company’s social media handles.
We’ve embedded the link to watch the live stream of the Redmi Note 9 series below.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 leaked specificationsThe Redmi Note 9 was allegedly shown-off in official renders that leaked the other day. It is a toned-down version of the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Pro Max that were launched in India in March. However, there’s no word if the Redmi Note 9 will launch in India later this year to complete its existing series in the country.
It is expected to feature a 6.5-inch display with Full HD+ resolution and a punch-hole notch for the selfie camera on the front. The phone is made from plastic and will come in three gradient finishes. It is powered by the unreleased MediaTek Helio G85 chip with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage options to choose from.
The phone has a quad-camera setup that consists of a primary 48MP sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there’s a 13MP selfie camera that is housed within the punch hole cutout.
The Redmi Note 9 comes fitted with a 5,000mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging via Type-C. As per earlier leaks, the Redmi Note 9 could be priced starting at CNY 1,400 in China which is roughly Rs 15,000 by direct conversion.
As for the Mi Note 10 Lite, it could feature a 6.4-inch display with Full HD+ resolution and it could be powered by a Snapdragon 730G chipset that also powers the Mi Note 10. The camera setup is where things could change as the Lite variant is confirmed to have four cameras instead of a penta-camera setup on both the Mi Note 10 and Note 10 Pro.

Google Chromecast Ultra with a dedicated remote control could be coming soon
It looks like the Fire TV Stick will finally have some stiff competition. If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then a new Chromecast Ultra has appeared on the Taiwanese certification agency NCC. This Chromecast Ultra comes with a remote control. The new information about the device was first spotted by MySmartPrice. In the certification, Google details a device that has two components - the Chromecast Ultra and a remote control. Information circulating the internet suggested that the device has a codename “sabrina”.
The new device is said to have the same features as the current Chromecast Ultra but will bring with it a remote control. It will support 4K and HDR, but it isn’t clear if it will support other formats like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, both of which are supported on the 4K Fire TV Stick available in India. It looks like the remote control which will come with the new Chromecast Ultra will be a cross between the Daydream remote control and the Apple TV remote control. It is also expected that the remote control will have a microphone for easy access to the Google Assistant along with a dedicated button to bring up the Assistant.
Aesthetically, it seems the device will be the same as the 3rd-generation Chromecast aka the Chromecast 3 (read our review here). It is expected to have a soft rounded finish with the “G” logo on it. It is still unclear whether the device will come in black and white colour options only or will it come in the colourful options we saw with the Chromecast 2 (read our review here).
For consumers in India, it looks like Google could be late to the streaming party with this upcoming device. There are a lot of Android TV based streaming boxes available, some from service providers like Airtel and ACT combining their respective services with the Android TV box to give consumers a package deal. We also have a device like the Fire TV Stick, which is available in 2 options - FHD and 4K HDR to cater to those that want to upgrade to a smart TV experience. Just so you know, the 4K Chromecast Ultra was never officially launched in India.

Google Pixel 4a could go on sale from May 22 but will it launch in India
Google Pixel 4a is a much-anticipated smartphone that has often been leaked with pictures of retail boxes being spotted on the internet recently. As per the latest piece of information, the Pixel 4a is slated to go on sale from May 22 in Germany. The phone was earlier set to be unveiled during Google I/O 2020, the company’s annual developers conference but the event was called off due to the Coronavirus outbreak across the world.
The successor to last year’s Pixel 3a, the 4a is expected to be a slightly trimmed down version of the Pixel 4 and is aimed at markets like India where the Pixel 4 didn’t launch. According to a German report, the 4a will likely go on sale from May 22 and will be offered by Vodafone under contract. The phone is reportedly priced starting at 399 Euros which roughly translates to around Rs 32,000 by direct conversion.
Google Pixel 4a comes after Apple announced an affordable iPhone SE 2020 and OnePlus launched its latest OnePlus 8 series of smartphones earlier this month. The report hints that as the sale commences from May 22, we can expect Google to announce the 4a officially just days prior.
Google Pixel 4a leaked specificationsThe Google Pixel 4a is rumoured to feature a 5.8-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution OLED screen. The display has a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing 8MP camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.
It could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and upto 128GB storage options to choose from.
Pixel 4a has a single 12.2MP camera with support for both OIS and EIS, while the front-facing camera is reportedly the same as the Pixel 3a. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps. The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and could come in two colours-- Just Black and Barely Blue.
It is fitted with a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but skips out on wireless charging.
The 4a does have the company’s proprietary Titan M security chip but still misses out on the Pixel Neural Core. Also missing is the array of Soli radar chip and other sensors that debuted on the Pixel 4 last year. This, hopefully, indicates that Google could bring the Pixel 4a to India as the presence of Soli chip earlier on the Pixel 4 didn’t allow it to get certified for commercial use according to Indian laws.

COVID-19 impact: India saw a massive 19 decline in smartphone shipments in March 2020
The past two months saw no activity whatsoever in the smartphone market because of the ongoing lockdown in India. Counterpoint Research data indicates that the smartphone market in India grew at 4% YoY in Q1 2020. Shipments surged in January and February as compared to last year, and then came crashing with a 19% drop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Xiaomi, Vivo and Samsung now command the top three positions in the market, while Realme, Oppo and Apple are the fastest-growing OEMs.
Despite stiff competition from Xiaomi and other Chinese brands, strong sales of the iPhone 11 and multiple pricing promotions saw Apple’s market share surge in Q1 2020. The analyst firm claims, Apple was third-fastest growing brand in India with a whopping 79% growth. In the second position is Oppo with 83% YoY growth while Realme is the fastest growing with a 119% growth in shipments, YoY in Q1 2020.
How did the Indian smartphone market perform in Q1 2020?Apple also topped the charts in the ‘ultra-premium segment’ with a majority 53% market share. Yet, Apple still doesn’t command a major share of the pie in the overall market. Xiaomi, Vivo and Samsung are the top three overall.
Xiaomi led the market with a 30% market share in Q1 2020, showing a 6% growth YoY, driven by a strong performance of the Redmi Note 8 series along with offline expansion, affordable pricing and more. Vivo also grew by 40% YoY in Q1 2020, surpassing Samsung, driven by the strong performance of the Y-series. Counterpoint notes that Vivo exited the quarter with low inventory which will help the brand in planning new launches once the lockdown lifts. The company was supposed to launch the Vivo V19 in India in March.
Samsung fell to the third position with new launches targeting diverse price tiers. The Korean giant’s growth saw a sharp 84% decline YoY owing to a decline in shipments in the sub 10K segment which was dominated by Xiaomi, Realme and Vivo.
Realme and Oppo are the next success stories in India with a healthy 119% and 83% YoY growth respectively. Poco also re-entered India as an independent brand and capture 2% market share in March 2020. Poco was one of the top 5 brands in the 15-20K segment.
Expect growth to pick up from Q3 2020Counterpoint Research data indicates the Indian smartphone market grew in January and February with new launches and aggressive promotions. However, March saw a steep decline of 19 per cent, restricting overall growth to 4 per cent this quarter. The report states “any signs of recovery will likely only start from the third quarter onwards. As a result, we are estimating that overall smartphone shipments will decline by 10% for the full calendar year.”
Commenting on the market dynamics, Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research said, “The COVID-19 effect on India was relatively mild until mid-March. However, economic activities declined as people save money in expectation of an extended period of uncertainty and an almost complete lockdown. Almost all smartphone manufacturing has been suspended. Further, with the social distancing norms, factories will be running at lower capacities even after the lockdown is lifted. Consumer demand will have a larger impact on smartphone sales, as people will focus on saving and therefore limit discretionary purchases. As entry-level smartphone consumers will be the worst-hit by the lockdown, the demand for the entry-level smartphones will decline in the near-term. We believe demand will shift to the second part of the year. Even if the situation stabilizes by mid-year, people may hold-off purchasing until the festive season.”
OEMs will need a lot of work to restart operations once the lockdown is lifted. They will have to manage existing inventory across their distributor and retail network, helping retailers sell off the older inventory. Factory production will also struggle to hit full capacity with social distancing norms in place. Furthermore, the lockdown may only lift in areas marked as green zones. Brands will have to restructure their strategies to focus more on green zones and drive sales in non-affected areas.

WhatsApp group video call support for 8 people is now live
If you use WhatsApp to stay in touch with family and friends, then there is good news for you. The recently announced feature, that increases the number of people you can video call simultaneously is now live. The previous maximum limit on a video call was 4 and that has now increased to 8. On its official blog, WhatsApp says, “The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that many of us are isolated from friends and family. As a result, we see that people all over the world are turning to voice and video calling on WhatsApp more than ever before. Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once. Starting today, we’re doubling the number of participants you can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time. Over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic. And just like written messages, all those calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions.”
If you cannot see the option to talk to 8 people, that's because you need to update the app on your smartphone. Simply go into the App Store on your iOS device or the Play Store on your Android device and check for an update. The update itself highlights the addition of 8 people video calls in its details.
In other WhatsApp news, at the beginning of April, WhatsApp reduced the number of people one could forward a message to. The number which was previously 5 was reduced to 1. This was done to curb/reduce the spread of misinformation about the ongoing pandemic. WhatsApp has said that because of this they have seen a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages. You can read more about it here. Facebook-owned WhatsApp is the world's largest messaging service. It has more than 2 billion users globally of which more than 400 million users are in India alone.

LG Velvet key specs officially confirmed ahead of May 7 launch
LG has officially revealed key details about the LG Velvet which is set to launch in an online event on May 7. The South Korean company has revealed almost all information about the device almost a week in advance. LG also confirmed the devices will go on sale in South Korea on May 15. The device did go through the usual rounds of leaks and rumours. The recent announcement a week before launch simply confirms all the details.
LG Velvet hardware specs and featuresThe LG Velvet is a 5G-powered smartphone that rocks a large 6.8-inch display which LG is calling the Cinema FullVision display because of the tall 20.5:9 aspect ratio. It’s a fast mid-ranger with the Snapdragon 765 under the hood which comes with an integrated 5G modem.
The rear panel of the phone rocks a triple camera setup with a ‘raindrop’ design. The camera hardware includes a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 5MP depth sensor. To aid in video shooting, there’s a ‘Voice Out Focus’ feature that cleans the audio of background noises. There’s also an interesting ASMR recording mode.
The LG Velvet comes with a 4,300mAh battery and a ‘low-power software algorithm’ that’s apparently LG’s own and should keep power consumption on the down-low. The phone also comes with stereo speakers and supports LG’s Dual Screen and Stylus accessories. LG has confirmed the phone will be available in Aurora White, Aurora Grey, Aurora Green, and Illusion Sunset.
LG has not disclosed the price of the LG Velvet yet. The phone will be sold through all three major carriers in South Korea from May 15. More details on the pricing and availability will be revealed on May 7 at the online event.

No, an asteroid will not hit us anytime soon Do not panic, says NASA
You may have read all the scary headlines regarding an asteroid flying by Earth and such? Our Facebook feeds were full of the stuff but we’re here to set the record straight. The asteroid is of no danger to Earth. Not even a bit. In a report on Space.com, scientists have surmised that the asteroid will hurtle past our planet about 6.3 million kilometres away on April 29. In the vast cosmic scale, 6.3 million kilometres isn’t that far a distance but it has absolutely no chance of affecting the Earth in any way. So, no, an asteroid is not coming for us and those doomsday prophecies were wrong.
Dubbed 1998 OR2, the asteroid is about 2.4 Kms wide and to put things in perspective, when the asteroid hurtles past Earth, it will be about 16 times further away from us that the actual Moon is. According to the same report, scientists and astrophysicists have determined that for now, no big asteroids will collide with Earth. Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California says, “There are no asteroids which have any significant chance of hitting the Earth that are of any significant size. There are none on our list.”
And NASA is confident of this statement as the agency has tracked various near-Earth asteroids in the vicinity and are confident that none of them will come close to colliding with Earth. But, they also warn that this news should not make us careless and miss out any real dangers that may be closer than we think. Scientists have also said that even though the likelihood of an asteroid colliding with Earth is slim, it is an inevitable event. It may not be anytime soon, but it will happen.
But, with the kind of technology and detection systems we have in place, humanity can actually formulate a plan to deal with the kind of catastrophic events that will arise from an asteroid smashing onto the surface of the Earth.
If you’re interested in space and space travel, you should check out the superstitions astronauts have right here. Or, if you want to know more about what we achieved in science in 2019, you can head on over here. For more science and technology news, head on over to the relevant section, right here.

The iPhone 12 launch might get postponed due to mass production delays
The COVID-19 pandemic will delay the launch of iPhone 12 this year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The report claims that Apple is a month behind in iPhone 12 production, which might lead to Apple pushing back the launch date beyond the usual first Tuesday of September, owing to disruptions in the supply chain. The report claims Apple has cut back estimates for July-December by as much as 20 per cent.
Apple is expected to expand the iPhone lineup to four smartphones this year — A 5.4-inch model, a 6.7-inch model, and two 6.1-inch variants. The iPhone 11 series was launched in three variants that feature 5.1-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch displays.
This is not the first report to claim Apple has cut back on production. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said iPhone 12 production is a month behind. He said since Apple executives cannot fly to China right now, the company has shifted the engineering verification process to remote operations. However, factories are still taking more time than under normal circumstances.
Having said that, a delay in mass production does not necessarily mean Apple will postpone the scheduled launch date. It could very likely be a repeat of what happened with the iPhone X or the iPhone XR where the phones were announced in September but customers had to wait for a month to get their hands on them.
iPhone 12 expected specs and featuresAs mentioned before, Apple is working on releasing four iPhone 12 models this year. Leaked design of the iPhone 12 hints at an iPad Pro-like flat-edge chassis and there are rumours that all the iPhone 12 modems will have 5G support, although only the high-end iPhone 12 models could get support for mmWave while the rest may only get support for sub-6GHz bands.
Furthermore, a purportedly leaked image claims the iPhone 12 Pro variants will pack the same LiDAR scanner sensor seen on this year’s iPad Pro that helps in improving AR apps. The iPhone 12 models will also be powered by the upcoming Apple A14 processor which is reportedly being made on a 5nm TSMC process.
The iPhone 12 Pro models (that's what we're assuming they will be called) will retain the triple-camera design but with a 64MP sensor in the primary camera along with support for all three lenses in Night Mode. Two of the models are expected to come with 6GB RAM while the other two are rumoured to pack 4GB RAM.

The Last of Us Part 2 has a new release date and its sooner than you think
When The Last of Us Part 2 was delayed “indefinitely” fans of the franchise were deeply saddened. The game, which was originally set to release in February 2020, was delayed to May 29 because the developers wanted to give players a polished experience. As Shigeru Miyamoto said, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” However, in April it was announced that The Last of Us Part 2 was delayed yet again and not due to any technical reasons but due to the ongoing pandemic. Naughty Dog released a statement saying that they wanted to ensure the game reaches everyone, and since a lot of the world is in some form of lockdown, getting physical copies to them would be impossible.
Now, Sony has revealed on the PlayStation Blog that The Last of Us Part 2 will release on June 19. That is in 52 days as of writing this article. Less than 2 months away. Sony’s other high profile exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima which was scheduled to release on June 26 has been pushed back to July 17 to give the Last of Us Part 2 some breathing space.
Hermen Hulst, Head of Worldwide Studios, SIE took to the PlayStation Blog and said, “As our teams at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Worldwide Studios approach development milestones and confront a world changed by COVID-19, we find ourselves having to adapt to today’s ever-changing environment. Amidst some disruptions to our working styles, we wanted to provide an update to PlayStation gamers who are eager to learn when our next exclusive titles will arrive on PlayStation 4. As we begin to see an ease in the global distribution environment, I am pleased to confirm that The Last of Us Part II will arrive on June 19. And Ghost of Tsushima will follow on July 17.”
Even though Hermen Hulst sights distribution as the issue, we aren't entirely sure that was the reason The Last of Us Part 2 got a release date. On April 27, a massive Last of Us Part 2 leak hit the internet and while we aren't going to go over the details here, it is safe to say that the leak has major spoilers that will ruin the plot for anyone interested in the game.

WhatsApp highly forwarded messages see 70 percent drop after new limit
At the beginning of April, WhatsApp reduced the number of people one could forward a message to. The number which was previously 5 was reduced to 1. This was done to curb/reduce the spread of misinformation about the ongoing pandemic. In a statement to TechCrunch, WhatsApp said, “We recently introduced a limit to sharing ‘highly forwarded messages’ to just one chat. Since putting into place this new limit, globally there has been a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages sent on WhatsApp.”
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is the world's largest messaging service. It has more than 2 billion users globally of which more than 400 million users are in India alone. When the limit was reduced to 1, WhatsApp in a blog post said, “Is all forwarding bad? Certainly not. We know many users forward helpful information, as well as funny videos, memes, and reflections or prayers they find meaningful. In recent weeks, people have also used WhatsApp to organize public moments of support for frontline health workers. However, we’ve seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation. We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.”
Not all is bad for those that want to share and stay in touch with their loved ones through WhatsApp. WhatsApp recently increased its group call limit from four to eight. It also announced Messenger Rooms that would hold up to 50 people with no time limit. You can read more about it here.

OnePlus issued an update to fix the green tint display issue in the OnePlus 88 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro may have snagged the highest rating from DisplayMate for the large AMOLED panel it uses on the smartphone, but a lot of users have been complaining about a green-tint on the panel, which also incidentally bugs Galaxy S20 Ultra users as well. Thankfully, OnePlus has issued an update that fixes the problem.
OnePlus is rolling out OxygenOS 10.5.5 update for the OnePlus 8 Pro and OxygenOS 10.5.4 update for the OnePlus 8. The changelog includes a fix for the green tint issue. OnePlus mentions it has ironed out issues in touch sensitivity at the edges and optimised the screen for some effects.
The update also includes new features for the camera with improvements in focusing and white-balance, especially in low-light. The new update also works at improving the smoothness and stability of the camera app. OnePlus also mentions it fixed issues with Wi-Fi and mobile network in the flagship.
As for the OnePlus 8, the new update also includes the green tint correction, along with improved system stability and some more fixes in network stability.
OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro hardware specs and featuresThe OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are confirmed to launch in India after the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus lifts. While the former is the default option for most with a Snapdragon 865 SoC, and a triple camera setup at the back, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the company’s first true premium flagship that now takes care of the little things like wireless charging and water resistance. Both smartphones are flagship-grade with the Snapdragon 865 SoC under the hood. However, while the OnePlus 8 only gets a 6.5-inch FHD+ 90Hz display, the OnePlus 8 Pro brings a QHD+ 6.7-inch 120Hz display. Furthermore, the Pro variant runs on LPDDR5 RAM, the latest memory standard out in the market and rocks 30W wireless charging support. There are also two 48MP cameras on the OnePlus 8 Pro including a custom-built Sony IMX689 sensor while the OnePlus 8 gets the new Sony IMX586 48MP sensor.
Pricing for the OnePlus 8 in India starts from Rs 41,999 in India while the OnePlus 8 Pro will start at Rs 54,999. Both smartphones will be sold via Amazon India, OnePlus’ own e-store and via offline channels.

Upcoming Realme TV reportedly receives Android TV certification
The much-anticipated Realme TV might get a launch date in India soon. As per the latest reports, the upcoming TV has received Google certification for India, leading to speculation around the company's debut in the TV category as the lockdown eases.
Realme has confirmed that it's venturing into the TV category this year. The plan was to reveal the product in March but was delayed due to the unfortunate Covid-19 outbreak. It's evident that it is in the works, and recent developments hint of reaching into the final stage.
The latest information comes via a tweet from Android TV guide (@androidtv_rumor), with a screenshot of a list of upcoming TVs that have just been certified by Google. The screenshot mentions three brands for India, which as per the screenshot are the same models. As per the unverified screenshot, the code name "ikebukuro" is used for a pre-existing Changhong based TV model used by many brands. The SoC is said to be an MStar T16.

Realme X3 SuperZoom with new design allegedly leaked
An upcoming Realme smartphone has been spotted on the Internet with a new design and could be the rumoured Realme X3 SuperZoom. The company recently announced the Realme X50m in China and was also preparing to introduce the new Narzo series in India. However, as the nation-wide lockdown to curb the spread of the Coronavirus remains in effect, the launch was postponed many times and will now be held at a later date.
The leaked images come from the account Digital Chat Station on Weibo who posted two images of a mysterious Realme smartphone. The phone in pictures seems to have a glass design with a carbon fibre finish underneath. The most distinct element in the design, however, is the middle strip that runs through the centre of the back panel.
The transparent strip has yellow accents with the brand’s logo in the centre. It also surrounds the rear camera setup that’s housed under the glass panel. This is pretty similar to Oppo’s Reno smartphone design but isn’t a direct rip-off, which could be a good thing.
Giving us a clear picture of the phone is another source that posted a render of the much-rumoured Realme X3 SuperZoom and it looks very similar to the pictures we’ve seen on Weibo. The phone that’s touted to be the Realme X3 SuperZoom features a quad-camera setup and has a yellow stripe running through the middle with the Realme logo.
Realme X3 SuperZoom has been spotted previously on various certification and benchmarking websites and goes by the model number RMX2086, almost everywhere. According to earlier reports, the X3 SuperZoom could offer up to 20x hybrid zoom, running Android 10 on a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset.
We may be reading a bit too much between the lines, however, it looks like the Realme X3 series or the X3 SuperZoom is set to launch in an all-new avatar, whenever that might be.

Call of Duty: Mobile will get new Rust map next week
Activision has finally confirmed that the Rust map will be available for Call of Duty: Mobile next week. The developers had previously teased the map on its social media handles, but players were quick to recognise the map thanks to the iconic central tower. The map was first seen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and was included in the Season 2 update for the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game.
The new classic Call of Duty map, Rust is coming to #CODMobile this week and we are just as excited as you are! pic.twitter.com/8Exeg2inoZ
— Call of Duty: Mobile (@PlayCODMobile) April 26, 2020The new map is set in an oil yard in the middle of a desert. It will feature a lot of Close Quarters Battle (CQB), so SMGs and shotguns may be a good choice for players. However, the map will also offer mid-range and long-range opportunities. Most notable being the central tower that can be climbed and used as a sniper nest. Due to the tight and twisting nature of the map, keep your senses peeled for any ambushes by enemies. As such, getting some verticality may be a very good idea. It may be a good idea to equip scorestreaks like the MQ-27 Dragonfire, Stealth Chopper, and the VTOL. You can find more information about the map on Activision’s official blog.
Call of Duty: Mobile has been releasing new maps at a fairly regular pace. The first new map to be released for the game was Scrapyard, a map first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This was followed by Cage, a new map that was exclusive to mobile. The last map that was released for the game was Meltdown, which was first seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. However, Rust will not be the last map to release for the game as the developers are testing another new map in Beta. Called Saloon, the new map is quite small and will most likely be limited to the new 1v1 Duel mode that will release soon.
Call of Duty: Mobile’s competitor, PUBG Mobile, is also doing its bit to attract gamers bored at home during this lockdown period. The developers have introduced a new mode called ‘Arctic Mode’. This mode challenges players to maintain their body temperature, while still being on the lookout for enemies. The game also adds a remote control drone to the mix, adding a new level of tactics and strategy. Furthermore, the developers have also announced the addition of a ranked mode for Team Death Matches.

Xiaomi to announce MIUI 12 with Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G today: Everything you need to know
Xiaomi is set to announce the Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G smartphone along with MIUI 12 in an event in China. While the Mi 10 Youth Edition is most likely the Mi 10 Lite 5G launched in Europe, all eyes are on the upcoming new user interface from Xiaomi which will be pushed to a host of Xiaomi-made devices across the world, eventually.
So, while the Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G may just stick to the Chinese market, MIUI will have a big impact on Xiaomi’s portfolio of devices across the world and especially in India. With its key competitors (Oppo, Vivo and Realme) going all out with their new interfaces for 2020, MIUI was also looking to follow suit.
MIUI 12: Expected features and release dateIn all likeliness, the Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G will be the first smartphone to run on MIUI 12. The custom Android skin was teased by Xiaomi executives on Weibo, and going by the teasers, MIUI 12 will likely look at offering a consistent user experience, along with more privacy options. To this regard, Xiaomi has unveiled a new Privacy logo that will be applied to all its future products to assuage users of Mi phones offering user privacy.
Xiaomi also confirmed it has developed an open-source Mobile AI Compute Engine that will allow mobile phones to perform offline computing without uploading the data to servers, ensuring maximum security for users. Notably, this is something that Apple does in iOS devices.
Another more holistic upgrade is a new information security management system that’s based on six important rules — Data minimisation, openness, transparency, security protection, purpose limitation, compliance review and clear responsibilities. More details around Xiaomi’s new push for privacy will be revealed at the event scheduled today.
Furthermore, Xiaomi is expected to unveil a new design language for the UI, maybe a more consistent dark mode but definitely facelifts for its stock apps. One such app that is expected to get a big upgrade is the Notes app which is set to get a lot cleaner and intuitive. Reports claim the Notes app will sync with the to-do lists with a single click.
There are more such features on the cards, which will only be confirmed once Xiaomi makes the announcement. As for the release date, we expect Xiaomi to reveal a timeline for devices that will receive the update to the new UI at the event.
Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G: Expected Specs, features and priceThere seems to be a high demand for mid-range 5G smartphones in China, and Xiaomi is looking to make the most of it. The Mi 10 Youth Edition is likely to launch in four variants. The base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, another with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, one with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and one last with 8GB RAM with 256GB storage.
The price is expected to start from RMB 2,299 (roughly Rs 24,800) for the 6+64GB variant, RMB 2,499 (roughly Rs 27,000) for the 6+128GB variant, RMB 2,699 (roughly Rs 29,000) for the 8+128GB variant and RMB 2,999 (roughly Rs 32,000) for the 8+256GB variant.
The Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G is expected to come with a 6.57-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution. Xiaomi has confirmed it is a Samsung display with a high contrast ratio. The phone, quite expectedly, is powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC which comes with an integrated 5G modem.
While many think the Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G will be the same as the Mi 10 Lite 5G launched in Europe, the camera specs may differ a little. The company teased a quad-camera setup at the back that includes 50x digital zoom. The primary camera is expected to house a 48MP sensor, paired with an ultra-wide lens and two more lenses. However, none of them has the folded periscope design so it will be interesting to see how Xiaomi achieves the 50x zoom that it promised. In addition, it’s expected to offer a 16MP front camera in a waterdrop notch. The phone is rumoured to offer a 4,160mAh battery and run MIUI 12 out of the box.
