The PS5 is slated to launch towards the end of 2020 and Sony has done a decent job of surprising fans with information about the console. The company took to a blog post to show off the DualSense controller before it could be leaked. At an event in June, Sony also showed off the PS5 and PS5 all-digital edition before it could be leaked as the console was expected to enter production. However, a lot of information like the date of Sony’s events has leaked online multiple times and has generally been on point. However, we do suggest you take the following information with a grain of salt.
According to Jeff Grubb’s Summer Game Mess, it looks like Sony will hold a PS5 state of Play in August 2020. He doesn’t mention a date but information circulating the internet suggests that it could be between the 5th and 11th of August. There is no information on what could be showcased at the event but speculations are high for rumoured games like Silent Hill remake and many more that are yet to be announced.

There is a lot we do not know about the console including the UI, where is the expansion slot, the ports at the back of the console and most importantly, a price and launch date. Getting all the above information at one go may be asking for too much as Sony and Microsoft are both waiting for the other to reveal the price first. Microsoft is also expected to hold an Xbox Showcase in August.
We did get some hints of the PS5 UI during the June showcase, but nothing that gives us any details. Both Sony and Microsoft have shown us what the next-gen consoles look like and you can check out our comparison of the 2 consoles here. You can also check our comparison of the specifications of the PS5 and Xbox Series X here.

It looks like Netflix customers will be able to control the playback speed of the content they watch. According to The Verge, “Netflix will allow anyone on an Android mobile device to stream at either 0.5x or 0.75x speeds for slowed-down viewing and 1.25x or 1.5x speeds for faster watching”. For those that consume content at a fast speed on YouTube will be familiar with these playback options. It looks like Netflix is testing the feature on the web browsers and iOS but there is no information on whether this will come to the Smart TV platform or to streaming devices like the Fire TV stick or Mi Box.
Playing content faster or slower isn’t something new and the feature has been available on YouTube for some time now. The options on YouTube to control playback speed are more than what Netflix is offering. If you are binge-watching a show, there are times when you want to watch a certain section faster just to run through it without actually skipping 10 seconds ahead in case you miss something and the ability to control the playback speed will help with this.
“We’ve also been mindful of the concerns of some creators,” a spokesperson told The Verge. “It’s why we have capped the range of playback speeds and require members to vary the speed each time they watch something new — versus fixing their settings based on the last speed they used.”
If you are someone that is looking to subscribe to Netflix, we caution you to be careful as a new Netflix phishing scam has come into light that attempts to steal your personal and credit card information. Moreover, the phishing email is able to bypass mail security measures in place to block such scams in the first place. You can read more about it here.
In other Netflix news, it looks like the streaming service is currently testing a new Mobile+ plan in India priced at Rs 349 monthly that offers HD streaming for phone, tablet or PC. Sony recently launched the HT-G700 Soundbar in the US and the device is now available in India. The Sony HT-G700 3.1 soundbar has the front three channels in the bar itself and also comes with a wireless subwoofer. We have seen the Sony HT-Z9F Dolby Atmos enabled soundbar launch in India in 2019. It was also a 3.1 channel soundbar with the optional rear speakers to give users a surround sound effect. You can read our review of the Sony HT-Z9F here. Coming back to the HT-G700 the soundbar has an Immersive AE (audio Engine) which simulates a surround sound experience from the soundbar for content which is not mastered in Dolby Atmos. Let’s dive deep and take a look at everything the soundbar has to offer.
Sony HT-G700 Features and Specifications
The Sony HT-G700 soundbar is a 3.1 soundbar which means that instead of the traditional two drivers in the soundbar, there are three. The only other time we have seen this setup is with the Philps TAPB603 soundbar and you can read more about it here. The soundbar is accompanied by a wireless subwoofer and syncing them is as easy as plugging them into the wall and switching it on.
The Sony HT-G700 supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It comes with a simple easy to use remote control and has a button labelled Immersive AE to enhance audio which is not in Dolby Atmos. The remote control lets you toggle through a bunch of modes including Standard, Cinema and Music. It also lets you control the volume level, subwoofer level and more. The soundbar can get pretty loud as it has a sound output of 400 W. For inputs, it has Optical-audio input, USB type A, Bluetooth Version 5, 1 HDMI output that supports eARC and 1 HDMI input for passthrough with support for 4K at 60Hz and Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It does not support WiFi which is a bummer.
Sony HT-G700 Price
The Sony HT-G700 Soundbar is available in India for Rs 39,990. It is cheaper than its US price which is $600 (Rs 45,000 approx. directly converted)
In addition to the HT-G700, Sony currently has three Dolby Atmos enabled soundbars it sells in India. One is the above-mentioned HT-Z9F, the other is the HT-X8500 (read our review here) and the last one is the premium HT-ST5000.

Sony has shown off the PS5 console in a grand reveal event but there are still a number of unanswered questions about the console. For starters, what are the ports at the back? Where is the M.2 slot for storage expansion? While PlayStation Lead Architect Mark Cerny has said we will get a teardown of the console before it launches, it is possible that one of Sony’s key aesthetic features for the PS5 has leaked online - customizable faceplates.
If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then the white plates on the PS5 can be snapped on and off. This means that you will be able to purchase additional plates aftermarket to customize the console to your liking. It also means that you will be able to replace the faceplates if they get damaged or dirty as a lot of people have been quite concerned about the durability of the “fins” of the console.

— Wario64 (@Wario64) July 27, 2020
The question that comes to mind is whether both the faceplates will be changeable. It seems possible for the all-digital edition, but what about the one with the disc? If you look at the image of the PS5 with a disc drive it looks like the drive is beneath the white plate which means it is possible that the faceplate is changeable, but this is something we will only know when the feature is confirmed by Sony.
A PS5 leak hints at interchangeable faceplates
The information about the customizable faceplates comes from ResetEra which has posted images of a bunch of faceplates in what looks like the assembly process of the PS5. There is also one post with an A4 sized paper kept on top of the faceplate so a size comparison can be drawn as to how big the console is. Even though the internet has taken the size of a standard Blu-ray drive to judge how big the PS5 is, there is no concrete information on the dimensions of the console.
If you are interested in checking out the design of the PS5 and seeing how it compares with the Xbox Series X, you can do so here. You can also check out our comparison between the specifications of the 2 consoles here. We also had a chance to speak with the head of PlayStation India about the journey of the PS4 and you can read that here.
Both Sony and Microsoft are set to launch their consoles towards the end of 2020 in the global market. While Microsoft has expressed interest in a simultaneous global launch of the Xbox Series X, there is no information on when the console will come to India. Sony, on the other hand, has a page for the PS5 live on Amazon, Flipkart and its own portal in India and we can expect the console in India close to its global debut. You can read more about the listing page for the PS5 here.

Google Pixel 4a could finally launch on August 3 after being delayed multiple times in the past few months. The delay in the announcement was also a result of the Coronavirus outbreak in different parts of the world which led to the cancellation of Google I/O 2020 event, where the Pixel 4a was expected to break cover. Nevertheless, according to fresh rumours, Google could be readying the Pixel 4a for an unveiling on August 3.
According to Jon Prosser who has been spot on with some of earlier leaks, the Pixel 4a will be launched on August 3. In a tweet, Prosser reveals that Google’s Pixel 4a launch is “100% happening on August 3”. There’s currently no word on whether or not the Pixel 4a will make it to India anytime soon. Google Pixel 4 didn’t launch in India due to the restrictions in the country on the commercial use of Soli radar and there has been a lot of speculation for the Pixel 4a in India as the successor to the Pixel 3a.
Google’s upcoming mid-range smartphone has previously been subject to numerous leaks and here’s everything we know about it.
Google Pixel 4a leaked specifications
Google Pixel 4a features a 5.81-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution and uses an OLED panel. There’s is a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for the 8MP front-facing camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.
The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options to choose from. The 4a does have the company’s proprietary Titan M security chip but still misses out on the Pixel Neural Core. Also missing is the array of Soli radar chip and other sensors that debuted on the Pixel 4 last year.
This, hopefully, indicates that Google could bring the Pixel 4a to India as the presence of Soli chip earlier on the Pixel 4 didn’t allow it to be certified for commercial use according to Indian laws.
Pixel 4a has a single 12.2MP camera with support for both OIS and EIS, while the front-facing camera is reportedly the same as the Pixel 3a. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps.
The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and could come in two colours-- Just Black and Barely Blue. The 4a is pre-loaded with the new Google Assistant and other features like Now Playing. It also comes with an assurance of getting Android updates for the next three years.
The Pixel 4a is fitted with a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but skips out on wireless charging.

The Indian government has banned 47 more apps in which some are allowing access to the previously banned apps, and some are simply clones of these apps. To recall, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and IT's (MEITY) banned 59 Chinese apps on national security grounds amid geopolitical tensions between India and China. The ban took place late last month where many popular apps like TikTok, WeChat, Shareit, UC Browser and more were restricted. That ban was announced under the provisions of Section 69A of the Information Technology Act to "protect national interest and security".
The new ban comes as a follow up where apps that provide access to previously banned apps are in the spotlight. Also, many cloned lite versions of the banned apps have been spotted including TikTok Lite, Helo Lite, ShareIt Lite, Bigo Lite and VFY Lite, which are reportedly unavailable on Google Play Store. A Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology official said, "The apps were found to be operating despite the ban via these versions. They have been taken down from application stores."
TechCrunch reports that one of the newly banned apps will include CamScanner Advanced, which is a popular document scanning app. Economic Times reports that Indian government has listed 275 Chinese apps from Chinese internet companies to examine for any violation of national security and user privacy. As per the report, the list includes PUBG Mobile by Tencent, Zili by Xiaomi, AliExpress by Alibaba and newly launched apps like Resso and Ulike by Bytedance, which also owns TikTok. There are 14 Mi apps by Xiaomi in the list among some other unpopular ones that the company owns. Apps from other Chinese internet and tech majors like Meitu, LBE Tech, Perfect Corp, Sina Corp, Netease Games, Yoozoo Global are also present.
Government is taking steps
An official told Economic Times, "the government may ban all, some or none from the list." Another senior official told that government is looking to frame a process for such bans, and the concerned ministry is asked to take necessary steps to form some form of law or regulation to scrutinize such apps consistently. "A set of rules or defined procedures may take time but is the correct process to go about it in the future," the official Told ET.
An official from Meity said the government would follow a due process before deciding to ban any app. “There is a process involved, there is a committee in place for such ban orders. If there is such an order, then Meity will act,” the person said. The committee has representatives from the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, information & broadcasting and law & justice, along with officials from CERT-In.
We do not have a complete list of 47 banned apps as of now. We will be updating the article as soon as we have more information about the banned apps.

If you are looking to invest in a pair of premium true wireless earphones then we say you should hold off for a few days. Sony is going to launch its flagship true wireless earphones, the WF-1000XM3 in India on August 6. A “notify me” page is live on Amazon.in listing the features and specifications of the Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earphones. Internationally, the earphones are priced at about Rs 20,000 approx. directly converted, and we think the sub 20k price point is where the headset will launch. The flagship feature of the headset is its noise-cancelling ability. Let’s dive deep into the specifications and features of the Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earphones.
Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earphones features and specifications
As you’ve probably guessed by now, the Sony WF-1000XM3 are a pair of truly wireless earphones and bring with them Sony’s HD Noise Cancelling Processor, QN1e. They have an overall claimed battery life of 32-hours without noise cancellation and 24 hours with noise cancellation. The earphones themselves have 6 hours of battery life with three more charges stored in the case. The earphones also support quick charge, giving users 90 minutes of playback with 10 min charge.
The Sony WF-1000XM3 true wireless earphones come with touch controls and also support virtual assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. Just like its bigger sibling, the Sony WH-1000XM3 (review), the wireless earphones also bring with them a bunch of modes such as Quick Attention Mode giving you the ability to talk to and listen to people around you without removing the earphones, Wear Detection, which stops the music when you remove the earphones, Ambient sound mode and more.
We have spent some time with the earphones and can tell you that the quality of audio and noise cancellation is pretty good. The only downside is that the earphones are not water-resistant, so you cant wear them in the gym. You can check out our impressions of the Sony WF-1000XM3 here.
If you have a budget of about 10k, then you can check out the Sony WF-XB700 Truly wireless earphones. In our review, we noted that “priced at Rs 9,990, the Sony WF-XB700 Extra Bass true wireless earphones are quite a compelling purchase, especially for those who enjoy a bass-forward sound profile. Nevertheless, they do miss out on features such as ANC, touch controls, and EQ customisation. While we don’t expect Sony to add ANC to a sub-10K pair of earphones, touch controls and app support was something we sorely missed at this price point. Nevertheless, the earphones offer a rich and warm sound profile that will sound decent with many genres of music, they have extremely reliable playback controls, solid battery life and also have a snug and comfortable fit”.
If you are on an even tighter budget, then you can check our list of the best true wireless earphones under Rs 5,000 here.

Intel announced its Q2 2020 earnings today and one of the major announcements relayed during the investors call was that Intel had identified a “defect mode” in their 7nm process which led to yield degradation issues. As a result, Intel is delaying their 7nm timeline by six months which means that Intel’s 7nm CPUs will probably hit the market in late 2022 or early 2023. Until then, Intel will have to rely on their 14nm and 10nm processes for their production lines. Intel’s 10nm process was also delayed multiple times over and with today’s announcement, it seems their 7nm is also behind schedule.
Intel 10nm, 7nm delays and timeline
While it’s easy to point out that Samsung and TSMC have well pushed ahead and even had their 7nm processes ready for production for quite some time, it should be noted that these processes are all not the same and that some manufacturers are actually ambitious with their goals whereas others are rather conservative. Intel’s 10nm is similar to TSMC and Samsung 7nm technologies in some aspects. In fact, transistor density for Intel 10nm is 100.76 M Tr/mm2. Million transistors per square millimeter, while TSMC N7FF is 96.5 and Samsung 7LPP is 95.3 at best. TSMC also has multiple refinements in the form of the N7FF+ which has a transistor density of 113.9 M Tr/mm2. AMD’s Ryzen processors and GPUs use TSMC 7nm process and the upcoming Zen3 microarchitecture based Ryzen 4000 desktop processors are supposedly built on the improved TSMC 7nm process which in ways puts it ahead of Intel’s 10nm desktop processors which are set to launch in the second half of 2021. However, this does not mean that the performance of the processors would be synonymous since there are a lot more factors contributing to overall processor performance.
At first, Intel had its 10nm process projected to be ready in 2015 as you can see from one of Intel’s old slides pictured above. 7nm was set to follow in 2017. Intel’s first 14nm desktop “Broadwell” processors came out in 2015 but they were extremely limited in the sense that only two desktop SKUs and four HEDT processors were ever released under Broadwell. Skylake, which followed Broadwell in the second half of 2015 was the first proper launch of Intel’s 14nm desktop portfolio with a full stack of processors catering to all price segments. While Intel has released numerous new families after Skylake, they’re all using some optimised form of the very same 14nm process. And this remains true for even the recently released Comet Lake 10th Gen desktop processors that came out in the first half of 2020.
Intel’s 10nm processors were supposed to start shipping in 2016 which then was delayed into 2018. Around the same time, Intel moved from their 2-stage Tick-Tock production model which had been in place since 2007 with their new 3-stage Process-Architecture-Optimisation (PAO) model. Tick-Tock was rather simple and relied on timely introduction of new transistor processes. Tick would be a shrink of the previous architecture onto the new process and it would be followed by a Tock which would see Intel introduce a new microarchitecture. Under PAO, Tick corresponds to Process, Tock corresponds to Architecture and Optimisation was the new stage of refining the existing architecture for another generation. In a way, this was essential since Intel’s process nodes were always ahead of the competition and ambitious goals would throw up more issues, especially when process nodes got smaller and smaller.
To put forth the PAO model In context with Intel’s current lineup, Process was when Intel introduced Broadwell (5th Gen) on the 14nm process for the first time. Architecture was when Skylake (6th Gen) was introduced 14nm as a new architecture, and Optimisation was when Intel introduced Kaby Lake (7th Gen Desktop/8th Gen Mobile), Kaby Lake Refresh (8th Gen Mobile), Coffee Lake (8th Gen Desktop), Coffee Lake Refresh (9th Gen Desktop), Whiskey Lake (8th Gen Mobile), Amber Lake (8th Gen Mobile) and lastly, Comet Lake (10th Gen Desktop).
And now, 10th Gen is finally set to release in the second half of 2021 as per today’s Q2 Financial Earnings press release which states, “Intel is accelerating its transition to 10nm products this year with increasing volumes and strong demand for an expanding line up. This includes a growing portfolio of 10nm-based Intel Core processors with “Tiger Lake” launching soon, and the first 10nm-based server CPU “Ice Lake,” which remains planned for the end of this year. In the second half of 2021, Intel expects to deliver a new line of client CPU’s (code-named “Alder Lake”), which will include its first 10nm-based desktop CPU, and a new 10nm-based server CPU (code-named “Sapphire Rapids”).”
As per Intel’s fab schedule put out in 2019, their 7nm process was supposed to be out in 2021 which seems to be on track for just one product, Intel’s Ponte Vecchio Xe-HPC GPU which is expected in later 2021. The CPUs, including desktop, mobile and server are all delayed due to the 7nm yield problems and are now a whole year behind schedule.
Intel’s press release states, “The company's 7nm-based CPU product timing is shifting approximately six months relative to prior expectations. The primary driver is the yield of Intel's 7nm process, which based on recent data, is now trending approximately twelve months behind the company's internal target."
Intel does release processors as per declarations made in their statements to their investors. Which is why we saw the two 14nm Broadwell desktop processors in 2015 and the one 10nm Cannon Lake processor in 2018. Whether Intel will release a token 7nm CPU just to keep up with their statements or make a proper launch is something we’ll only know after we see the first 7nm desktop CPUs launch in late 2022 or early 2023.
7nm isn’t easy
As transistors grow smaller, the lithography processes used to manufacture the silicon becomes quite difficult. Processor manufacturing is done by shining UV light via a mask onto the silicon substrate which is then washed and layered over and over again until the silicon is done. There are several issues with each individual step in the manufacturing stage. Getting sharp projections is just the beginning. EUV or Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography, which is technology used to produce silicon which have transistors smaller than 20nm have inherent anomalies which result in misaligned features. Then there are issues with aligning layers on top of each other wherein there can greater chances of misalignment, especially for features that are split across multiple layers. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
During the Financial Earning call, Intel did state that they would take a pragmatic approach towards manufacturing which includes outsourcing silicon manufacturing to other fabs aside from Intel's own. Intel did not specify if this had already begun.
Despite these difficulties, both TSMC and Samsung have managed to get their 7nm processes ready for production in 2018. Intel’s 10nm process, as previously stated, is quite similar to TSMC and Samsung’s 7nm process. There is little information to form a similar equivalence between TSMC and Samsung’s 5nm process with that of Intel’s 7nm process, so we can only imagine the challenges that lie in the road to 7nm for Intel.

The iPhone 11 is reportedly being manufactured in India at the Foxconn factory near Chennai, making it the first top-of-the-line iPhone to be made in India, triggering expectation of a price cut announcement owing to the benefits of local manufacturing. Previously, Apple was manufacturing the iPhone XR and iPhone SE in India.
It’s being perceived as a boost to Make in India initiative, after reports of a huge $1 Billion investment in India by Foxconn to boost iPhone manufacturing here in India, in a bid to reduce dependence on China.
Apple to boost local iPhone manufacturing through contract manufacturers
While Apple has not officially confirmed the development, the report comes from Economic Times and claims the plan is to step up production in phases. As per earlier reports, Foxconn also plans to expand the Tamil Nadu plant over a period of three years, investing over a $1 billion.
Previous reports claimed Apple was planning to move a fifth of its manufacturing out of China and to India. Senior Apple executives have reportedly been in talks with Government officials to chalk out a plan for expansion.
Apple’s plans to scale up manufacturing through its contract manufacturers — Wistron and Foxconn, to produce roughly $40 billion worth of smartphones. And under the new Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Apple only needs to produce $10 billion worth of smartphone to reap the benefits, and possibly, pass it down to the Indian customer.
Will iPhones now get cheaper in India?
iPhones have never been the best-seller in India, particularly for being outrageously expensive, sometimes even more so than other markets. The price tag also saw a bump after the Indian Government imposed an additional 10 percent service welfare tax, on top of the existing basic 20 percent import duty, which shot up the price of the latest iPhones, all of which are being imported for sale in India.
With the iPhone 11 now being locally manufactured, the additional 30 percent charge will be waived off for Apple, which could lead to a price drop of the most affordable iPhone in the 11 series, which could be a good starting, considering it is one of the most popular iPhones in India.
