I wearied of the fight says John Carmack, CTO of Metas virtual reality efforts

John Carmack, the CTO for Meta’s virtual reality wing has quit the company. His exit happened on Friday, according to sources who are familiar with Meta’s inner workings. Carmack has been fairly critical about Meta’s advancements so far in the VR and AR space, along with its metaverse ambitions. He posted on the company’s internal Workplace forum to inform people about his decision to leave.

"We built something pretty close to the right thing," Carmack said in the note "The issue is our efficiency.” He also added that he was ‘wearied of the fight’ with Meta. Meta acquired Oculus back in 2014, and then changed the name of the brand to Meta Quest, in spite of the fact that Oculus was already one of the most popular and best-known VR headsets. Palmer Luckey founded Oculus in 212 and Carmack joined as the first CTO in 2013.

"I have my own startup to run, but the fight is still winnable!" Carmack added in his note. "Maybe it is actually possible to get there by just ploughing ahead with current practices, but there is plenty of room for improvement. Make better decisions and fill your products with 'Give a Damn!'"
