Sony says the PS5 will be 100 times faster than the PS4

The PS5 obviously represents a generational leap when compared to the PS4 especially when you compare the specifications of the 2 devices. However, according to Sony the PS5 can process data 100 times faster than the PS4. In a recent Sony corporate strategy meeting Sony said, “through a custom‐designed high‐speed SSD, we plan to realize game data processing speeds that are approximately 100 times faster than PS4.” Considering the PS4 launched back in 2013, technology has improved considerably. The PS5 has a much-advanced CPU and GPU along with more memory when compared to the PS4, but the one piece of tech that truly represents a generational leap is the SSD. Mark Cerny highlighted this during his 2020 GDC presentation where the specs of the console were released. Even with a high powered CPU and GPU, the bottleneck would be the storage if the console launched with a traditional hard drive. SSD was the obvious way forward. 

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X bring with them some impressive specifications, including the SSD. The PS5’s SSD has speeds of 5.5GB/s (Raw) and 8-9GB/s (Compressed) whereas the Xbox Series X SSD has speeds of 2.4GB/s (Raw), 4.8GB/s (Compressed). How the leap in speed will affect the performance between the 2 is something only time will tell. However, the Xbox series X does have more GPU power. 

Sony has been drip-feeding us information about the PS5 whereas Microsoft has been quite open about the design, specs, and some of the games we can expect on the console.
