India smartphone exports estimated to cross 15 Billion in 2020: report

The Make in India initiative along with its incentives has led to a lot of smartphone makers assembling their devices in India. Apple has been making its iPhones in India including the iPhone SE (first generation), iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE as well. Apple is expected to make its latest iPhone 12 in India as well by 2021.

A report by TechArc, pegs “the total exports of smartphones to cross $1.5 billion by value. This would be over 98% of the total mobile phones exported out of India”. The report has some interesting insights. According to the report, a “total of 12.8 million mobile phones were exported from India from January to September 2020. Of this, there were 10.9 million smartphones”.

The ongoing pandemic has affected the export of phones. The volume of exports dropped to 1.2 million in the April-June quarter from 7.4 million in the January-March period. According to the report, the July-September quarter saw exports of 4.2 million units. This has hinted at a recovery in exports as the country started lifting the lockdown and people started going back to work and smartphone makers resumed production.

As far as brands are concerned, Samsung leads the exports with 11.6 million units of which 9.6 million units were smartphones while Xiaomi exported 0.6 million units. Lava exported 0.2 million smartphones.  Other brands rounding off the top 5 in exports are Vivo and OnePlus.

Lava is the only Indian brand of the top 5 when it comes to exports. With Micromax launching its new made in India smartphones, it will be interesting to see if it starts exporting these devices to other countries as well.

According to the report, 7 brands are exporting mobile phones from India to the US, 21 brands are exporting mobiles from India. 17 brands are exporting Smartphones.

To put things into perspective, India is exporting made in India phones to 24 countries. According to Faisal Kawoosa, Founder & Chief Analyst, techARC, “Today, India is exporting to 24 countries, some of which are further re-exporting, like UAE, to other markets making Indian made phones available to millions of users."
