BGMI Ban Update: Why Is BGMI Banned And What Is Kraftons Official Statement

One fine evening, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) goes missing from Apple App Store and Google Play Store, leaving its fan in frenzy. The news broke and the internet went haywire searching for why the battle royale game was banned, whether it was still playable somehow, and if it will return. Over the weekend, we gathered answers to most of those questions, and here’s everything you need to know about the BGMI ban in India.

The Alleged Reason For BGMI Ban

Although initially, Apple and the Government were quiet about the reason for the ban, Google revealed it removed BGMI from the Play Store because of a government directive. 

Now, for confidentiality, the exact details were still not being spilled. But as per sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that BGMI got pulled off the stores as per Section 69A of the Indian IT Law.

It is being invoked due to the “China Influence” of the game as allegedly, Krafton was sharing data with our neighboring nation.

Krafton Official Statement On BGMI Ban

Krafton’s initial response was that it is clarifying the reason for the sudden removal of the game from app stores.

Then, just the other day, Krafton CEO, Sean Hyunil Sohn came up with an official statement. The portion of the statement reads: “At KRAFTON, Inc. the security and privacy of our user data is of utmost importance to us. We have always been compliant with all laws and regulations in India including data protection laws and regulations and will continue abiding by them”. He further added, “There may be questions in your minds regarding the current situation about the country's most loved game-BGMI. In line with this, we have been working hard to communicate our sincerity with the concerned authorities and resolve the issues. We kindly request you to wait to hear from us. We will keep you informed about further updates.”

BGMI Ban In India Has Reportedly Resulted In The Game Being Removed From App Stores

On the evening of Thursday, July 28, we were surprised by the breaking news of the BGMI ban. Battlegrounds Mobile India was suddenly removed from Google Play and Apple App Store. Upon further digging, we have learned that this was done on the order of the Indian Government. The details are scanty and there is no official word from the Government yet. Still, here's what we know so far.

BGMI Ban By Indian Government

It’s been just over a year since Krafton brought back PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) in a new avatar called Battlegrounds Mobile Inda (BGMI). Just earlier this month, the game celebrated its first anniversary with a special login event. The last we reported of the game was that it banned 45000 players for cheating. Alas, weeks later, we have this sad news for its fans the game has been pulled out of the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. 

This is what Google said to Techcrunch about the BGMI removal from Play Store:

“On receipt of the order, following established process, we have notified the affected developer and have blocked access to the app that remained available on the Play Store in India.”

Meanwhile, Apple is yet to comment.

As for the game developer Krafton, it is still figuring out and “clarifying” the reason for this. 

Those who have the game installed can play it fine for the moment. The game servers aren't down, it seems.

The OnePlus 9RT comes with a 6.62-inch 1080p AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus chip. The 9RT has three cameras on the back with a 50MP main, 16MP ultra-wide-angle, and another 2MP macro sensor. On the front, the 9RT has a 16MP selfie camera. Completing the package is a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging.

Tuned Is Dead: Meta Is Shutting Down The Messaging App For Couples

Someone sensible at Facebook’s parent company Meta must’ve thought there aren’t enough hours in the day to chat beyond Messenger and WhatsApp to finally decide to pull the plug on Tuned, Meta’s social messaging app exclusively aimed for couples.

Why the Tuned app needed to exist is anyone’s guess, but its eventual demise doesn’t come as any surprise whatsoever. 

Why Meta’s Tuned app is shutting down

The Tuned couple-focused messaging app is discontinuing its services later this year because ‘it’s not sticking,’ according to Meta’s New Product Experimentation Team who developed it in the first place.

The social media giant hasn’t pointed to any stats or figures to justify the reason behind shutting down the Tuned couples messaging app – just that it isn't sticking or picking up traction, as much as Meta executives thought it would. 

In fact, Jessyka Faison, a New Product Experimentation (NPE) spokesperson was quoted in a statement, “In the spirit of experimentation and similarly to previous apps, we try a lot of things, learn, and if our tests aren’t sticking, shut it down.”

What happens to Tuned app’s user data

Tuned app was launched in the early days of the pandemic in 2020, aimed at keeping couples in touch with each other. It had messaging features, quizzes, voice messages, notes and lists, shared music through Spotify, and other interactive and intimate features that would help couples do more online.

The Tuned app even had a ‘check-in’ feature designed to ping couples about their relationship status, too. But it wasn’t to be, as seemingly Tuned app was unable to break through the pandemic years and increase its popularity enough for it to be worth Meta’s while.

According to The Verge, users of Meta’s Tuned app have received a warning which urges them to download all their in-app data before September 19, when the Tuned app will discontinue all services and cease to exist.

This is important as the CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) has found vulnerabilities in the Apple Watch that could leave it bare and open to threats like hacking, phishing, and data loss.

CERT-In Wants You To Update Apple Watch: Here’s Why

In a recent report, CERT-In, a Government of India department has discovered several vulnerabilities in the Apple Watch that could let bad actors execute arbitrary code, bypass the built-in security and take control of your data.

It points to the issue with the “buffer overflow in the AppleAVD component; an authorization issue in the AppleMobileFileintegrity component; out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU and WebKit component; type confusion in Multi-Touch component; Multiple out-of-bounds write and memory corruption in GPU Drivers component; out-of-bounds read in Kernel component and memory initialization in libxmI2 component”.

All those technical mumbo jumbo aside, what you need to know is that Apple has already fixed it. In its security content report, this buffer overflow issue in the Apple AVD component with “improved bounds checking”. 

So, here’s what you got to do:

1. Go to the Settings on your Apple Watch. 

2. Press on General

3. Tap on Software Update.

4. The watch will scan and show you the download option if it’s available. 

5. Click on Download and Install. 

The Watch will be updated and the aforementioned vulnerability will also be fixed as a result.
