Nobody likes to indulge in spam and unnecessary calls. Apps like Truecaller and its Live Caller ID are great options for detecting and avoiding these spam and fraud calls. But these calls have increased so much in the recent past that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to take some measures to cut down on this nuisance for consumers.
AI is coming to the aid of Indian telecom operators, thanks to TRAI’s intervention. TRAI has decided to count on AI in help filtering calls and totally avoid the ones which come from any loan agencies, credit card companies or any other annoying calls that have a tendency to disturb you at unwanted times.
From May 1, TRAI has taken the initiative of reaching out to all the telcos like Jio, Airtel, Vi, asking them to take the help of AI to get rid of the spam and fraud calling menace. Let’s look into the detailed mechanism of how it works.
Why is the AI-Based Spam Call Filter required?Lately you will hear everyone complaining about the unnecessary calls they receive at the wrong time always. Also, we can't disregard the fact that these calls also have led to fraudulent activities, scams and hacks as well. People have lost a huge sum of money or private information because of such calls. So, TRAI has taken it very seriously now to eliminate this completely for the protection of Indian telecom users.
How does AI-Based Spam Call Filter work? The AI tool used by TRAI will detect the call and compare from earlier records whether this number has created nuisance for its users or not and then block the numbers so that you don't receive any calls or SMS from them ever again. They also investigate when you receive a SMS from an unknown number.
In the upcoming days TRAI will also look into implementation of Caller ID that will come up with the name and photo of the caller on your screen. Airtel and Jio have already been working on this regulation and will implement it for their users very soon.
How will AI Spam Call Filter help Indian telecom users?Well, it is beneficial if you look into the fact that it will help you avoid spam calls and also not let such calls or SMS reach you when you are busy. But, there is a con to this. For getting the details when you receive a call, the telcos will be collecting all your data, so that definitely raises privacy and security concerns. Jio and Airtel have raised this with TRAI, and hopefully soon there will be a solution to this concern as well.
It is just the beginning of implementation of AI in the Indian telecom sector for spam and fraud detection calls. If this is taken seriously and planned well this will definitely turn out to be very useful but also hopefully, TRAI and the telcos will consider the several user privacy concerns before implementing their final solution.
