The Facebook Company goes Meta: Heres what it means for the future of Facebook

The Facebook Company has been rebranded and will be known as Meta going forward. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebrand at Connect 2021 and the company is now aiming to build the Metaverse which is described as “a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.”

The Facebook Company encapsulated social media services including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus. Going forward, these services will fall under Meta but the rebrand does not affect how Facebook, WhatsApp and more will function. 

“Our corporate structure is not changing, however, how we report on our financials will. Starting with our results for the fourth quarter of 2021, we plan to report on two operating segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs,” the company said in a press release.

On Metaverse

CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a $50 million investment in global research and program partners to ensure the Metaverse products are developed responsibly. 

As Zuckerberg explains in the Founders letter, the Metaverse will ensure that you are in the experience and not just looking at it through visual aid. With it, the company wants to explore the “ultimate dream of social technology” which is giving you a feeling of presence, as though you are with another person in another place.

“In the metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine — get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create — as well as completely new experiences that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today,” Zuckerberg writes in the Founder’s Letter.

As a part of its Annual Design Conference this year, Adobe will demonstrate Project In-Between, which is an AI-based tool that helps with creating living photos. The tool adds a seamless transition between two photos to create an animated end result that can be posted to GIF sites and social media platforms.

How does Adobe’s Project In-Between Work?

The tool leverages Adobe Sensei AI in order to create a transition between two similar photographs to give you a living photo. Users can also pick the number of transition frames to ensure the animation is as fluid as possible. The new frames created between the two photos (or the in-between frames) can also be accessed while editing. The same tool can also be used to create a slow-motion effect in video clips.

What is Adobe’s Project In-Between?

While Adobe says that this tool is designed to make the photos taken by your smartphone more interesting, the tool itself is only available on the desktop software. Hopefully, Adobe will offer a version that works on smartphones too, so that creators can use it and post the results while on the go. 

The concept of creating living photos is not necessarily new, with America's Next Top Model dedicating an entire episode to the same in Cycle 20 in 2013. However, this is the first time a company is using AI to make the media format more accessible to the masses.

Now, Apple has decided to keep things simple and revert to the classic design to keep users happy. 

How to use the Apple Safari 15

Having said that, it’s important to note that the unified layout is still available, and is the default option for the browser. You have to opt for the classic look to use it.

If you want to install the latest version of Safari on your Mac, all you need to do is open the System Preferences app and then click the Software Update option. You can go into the Tabs menu within the app’s preferences window to revert Safari to the old design.

In a move that is sure to interest gamers and music lovers, Sony has announced that Apple Music will now be available on the PlayStation 5. Apple Music on Sony PS5: How it works

The Apple Music app can be downloaded from the Media space on the PS5. Players can link their Apple Music account by simply following the on-screen instructions.

Once gamers install the Apple Music app on the PS5 and sign in, they can start the app either before or even during gameplay. Players will have to press the PS button on the DualSense wireless controller to access the Control Center and select the Music Function card. They can then find recommendations that match the game they are playing. They can also choose a playlist in their library or any other Apple Music-curated playlist.

Apple Music subscribers can also watch music videos in the app. Players can play videos on full screen, but if they go back to gaming or navigate to another part of the PS5’s menu, the audio from the video will continue to play. Once they go back to the Apple Music app, the video will continue playing seamlessly.

Redmi Watch 2 price leaks ahead of China launch, tipped to feature larger display

It looks like Redmi is preparing to launch a brand new wearable. The folks over at GizmoChina spotted the Redmi Watch 2 listed on Chinese retailer, JD.com. As per the listing, the wearable is priced at CNY 399, which is roughly Rs 4,700 when directly converted. It is not yet known if or when the watch will be available in India.

The report notes that the new Redmi Watch 2 is tipped to feature a 1.6-inch AMOLED display. By comparison, the current generation of the Redmi Watch packs a slightly smaller 1.4-inch display with an LCD panel. The AMOLED display on the new watch should allow for features such as an always-on display while also improving battery life. 

Other details aren’t yet confirmed, but we can speculate based on what the Redmi Watch GPS has to offer. The new phone comes with built-in GPS, so it should be safe to assume that the Redmi Watch 2 should also sport one. Further, the Redmi Watch GPS comes with 11 sports modes, so the upcoming device should be on par here or should offer even more activity tracking options. The watch is scheduled to launch in China on October 28.

Redmi is also preparing to launch the Redmi Note 11 series in China on October 28. Speaking of the phones, the company is expected to launch three new phones in the Redmi Note 11 series. These include the Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro and the Redmi Note 11 Pro+. The manufacturer recently confirmed on Weibo that the new series will see the introduction of 120W fast charging.

Currently, it is not yet known if or when Redmi will launch the Note 11 series or the Redmi Watch 2 in India. The Redmi Note 10 was launched in India in March this year, so one can expect a similar timeframe for the launch of the new phones.

Jio Phone Next features and launch date: Everything you need to know

Reliance has confirmed the launch date for the Jio Phone Next to be 4 November, and the smartphone’s main features have finally been revealed. The smartphone’s concept was announced during the company’s AGM meet, and it was touted as an affordable 4G smartphone that is being built in partnership with Google. 

Jio Phone Next: Features

The smartphone is rumoured to have a 5.5-inch HD screen. It is also likely to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 chipset paired with 4 Cortex-A53 cores and an integrated Adreno 306 GPU. ADditionally, like most entry-level smartphones, this smartphone will run on the Android Go OS, which is the toned-down version of the OS designed specifically for entry-level phones. Jio Phone Next may also have two variants - one with a 2GB and one with a 3GB RAM. It will come with Google Play preloaded, along with DuoGo and Google Camera Go. The smartphone’s camera will also have a Snapchat lens, which will be accessible from the main camera app. 

Jio Phone Next: Price in India

As this is touted to be an affordable smartphone, it is believed that it will be priced under Rs 4,000. In fact, previous leaks have suggested that the Jio Phone Next will cost Rs 3,499, however, the company has not confirmed the same yet. 

The smartphone will be launched on Diwali, 4 November 2021.

Older iPhones and Android devices wont be able to run WhatsApp from November 1st onward

In a bid to enhance customer safety, WhatsApp will stop running on older versions of Android and iPhones from 1st November 2021. On the Android front, this means that if your smartphone runs Android 4.1 or an older OS, then you will not be able to run WhatsApp on it. Similarly, if you own an Iphone that runs anything older than iOS 10, you won’t be able to use Whatsapp. 

Why is Whatsapp not supporting an older operating system?

While this move may seem a bit out of the blue, it is a necessary one as it can help protect customer’s data and enhance the overall safety of the app. Even the most affordable smartphones that are designed for tier-3 audiences, such as the itel A23 Pro Jio, run Android 10 (Go Version), which means that the scope for alienating the masses of India is very little. On the other hand, restricting access to those with newer smartphones that support the latest OS can help weeding out Whatsapp accounts that belong to burner phones, and other security threats. 

How to check your OS?

If you’re purchased an Android smartphone recently (within the last 5 years), chances are that you’re using an Android version that’s higher than 4.1. However, if you’re not too sure about it, all you need to do is open Settings, scroll down to About Phone, and tap the Android Version option. It will display the OS you’re running. 

Similarly, if you have an iPhone, head to the Settings app and navigate to General/ About / Software Version.

Clubhouse has disrupted the social media world with its audio-only chat rooms, demonstrating that valuable content still has a space online. In an effort to emulate the same, Twitter launched its own version known as Spaces in November 2020. Users who had over 600 followers could host a space anytime. Now, Twitter has introduced two new developments, the ability to hold Ticketed Spaces, and the ability to host a Space irrespective of your follower count. 

Twitter is investing heavily in Spaces

Ever since the launch of spaces, Twitter has demonstrated a keen interest in growing the platform. Over the course of a year, Twitter has added new functionalities to Spaces, including the ability to add co-hosts, up to 10 speakers (to create a panel), and a separate fund for creators leveraging Spaces, known as the Spark Program.

Now, it wants everyone to use Spaces to grow their Twitter following. It will even help creators develop a new revenue stream with the help of its Ticketed Spaces. 

Clubhouse initially began as an invite-only platform, perhaps to create the same hype that OnePlus smartphones had when they initially launched with their invite-only sales. The new social media platform abandoned the invite-only mode in July this year, believing it had garnered as much as it could out of it. Twitter, on the other hand, is a little late in making Spaces available to everyone and it will be interesting to see whether this gap will impact customer adoption.

WeChat now lets you search for content on Google and Bing

WeChat is known to post content in the form of articles and videos on its public accounts page, a page that functions like a news portal. Now, it has made the content available on Google and Bing. In other words, you can now conduct searches for WeChat’s content on these popular search engines. 

WeChat will no longer block rival links

China’s tech platforms have displayed a penchant for blocking rival links on their platforms to ensure that only their content is shared by users. However, recently, the content-cold-war between many of China’s messaging apps came to an end. On the heels of that, WeChat has now allowed its users to access and share external links on the platform. It is also making its content discoverable on global search engines, as opposed to just sticking to its own search engine, Sogou.

This move is a part of a larger regulatory crackdown that’s being enforced to stop the practise of link blocking. The said practise represented a loss worth billions of dollars for many platforms, thereby inhibiting the growth of the industry as a whole.

WeChat confirmed that it will be implementing these changes in phases. In a statement made to Reuters, the company said, "At the same time, WeChat will also actively cooperate with other Internet platforms to implement this guidance and explore the technical possibilities of using WeChat services on other platforms, to achieve further interconnectivity."

The device is backed up with a large 5000mAh battery, which claims to offer 16 hours of HD video streaming or 9 hours of gameplay. 

The user will be getting FunTouch OS 11 out of the box and the device will be running on Android 11 Go Edition.

In terms of display and design, Vivo Y3s 2021 comes with a 6.51-inch screen, which is a 720p+ IPS LCD panel. In the front, you are getting a drop notch design, which consists of a 5MP selfie camera. Judging by the video, the game will feature greatly improved graphics with higher resolution, better draw distances, more detail, new lighting system and more. Rockstar notes that the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will also include changes to gameplay. This includes modern control upgrades that include improvements to targeting and lock-on aiming, updated Weapon and Radio Station Wheels, updated Moni-Maps with enhanced navigation, updated Achievements, and more. 

Nintendo Switch users will get a few enhanced features such as Gyro aiming and touch screen camera zooming, pans and menu selection. The PC version will include support for Nvidia DLSS and new Accomplishments via the Rockstar Games Social Club. Console players have some good news coming their way as well. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play  Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition from November 11 onwards. In 2020, Oppo showed off its rollable concept phone - the Oppo X 2021 which unrolls to a large display and we got to test it out earlier this year.

According to a post on Weibo, the Oppo Fold’s design is expected to be similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an inward folding display. The foldable phone is tipped to feature a large 8-inch LTPO OLED display with upto 120Hz refresh rate.

Oppo Fold phone rumoured specs

The Oppo Fold is slated to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip and is suggested to be equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging. It will also likely run on ColorOS 12 but it remains unknown whether it will be based on Android 12 or 11.

As for the cameras, the Oppo foldable phone is tipped to have a 50MP primary camera that likely uses the Sony IMX766 sensor and a 32MP selfie camera. Having said that, there is no confirmation on the number of cameras present on the Oppo foldable phone. The report also states that the Oppo Fold will have a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

Oppo is also expected to launch the Reno 7, Reno 7 Pro and Reno 7 Pro+ powered by the Dimensity 920, Dimensity 1200 and Snapdragon 888 chips in November. We could hear something about the Oppo Fold officially next month.

In terms of battery life, the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro packs a 450mAh battery. The company notes that this is enough for up to 12 days of non-stop battery life. It also offers 2.3GB of storage for storing songs. Another notable feature is that the GTR 3 pro can take and make calls via a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone.
