Cryptocom accidentally credits more than 7mn to a customer: Heres what happened next

Due to an unfortunate typo, cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com mistakenly issued a customer A$10.5 million ($7.2 million) rather than the expected A$100 ($68), media reports say. Seven months later, when the exchange finally discovered the error, but till then some of the money had already gone, The Verge reported citing the Australian news outlet 7News as saying. The initial transfer occurred in May 2021. However, the exchange only realised the mistake when conducting an audit in December that year, the report said. Thevamanogari Manivel, the customer in question, reportedly transferred the money to a joint account and spent $890,526 on a lavish, five-bedroom mansion for her sister instead of reporting the inaccurate return to the exchange. Now the company's fighting to get its cash back with a lawsuit filed in the Victoria Supreme Court. The court has also ordered Manivel to sell the home and return the money (with interest) to the exchange. The case will resume in court this October.

Apples iPhone 14 line-up may come with 30W fast charging

San Francisco, Aug 30 (IANS) The iPhone 14 lineup may arrive with 30W fast charging, a significant jump from 20W being used in the iPhone 13 lineup.

According to reports, an unnamed charger brand is allegedly sending out 30W iPhone 14 adapters for early access and review.

This company believes Apple will be advertising 30W charging as a feature of the iPhone 14 series, reports AppleInsider.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was able to support 27W charging temporarily in a test, suggesting that 30W support is possible.

It is not yet clear if the 30W charging would be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models or be available to all four iPhone 14 models.

Apple recently released two 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapters to be used for charging the MacBook Air and iPhone simultaneously.

The iPhone 14 lineup is set to be announced during an event on September 7.

The next-generation iPhone 14, to be produced in India around two months after its China production, will see four models a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7 iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to reports.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 14 base model is rumoured to cost $799, which is the same price as the iPhone 13.

The tech giant has likely discontinued the 5.4-inch iPhone mini this year.

You can now insert emojis in Google Docs as you type

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Google has allowed users to insert emojis while writing in Google Docs, as they will not need to pull up emoji icons from other places anymore into their documents.

Google recently added emoji reactions to Docs, and now the users can add them to actual documents. The feature supports the most recent emoji.

"Building upon the recently announced emoji reaction feature, you can now express yourself in a new way by searching for and inserting emojis directly in line with your text in Google Docs," said the company.

The emoji tool is available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, along with users with personal Google accounts.

There is no admin control for this feature. To search for and add emojis directly in line with text in Docs, Google has simple steps to follow.

The simple way is to just type "@ (emoji name)," and typing "@emoji" will pull up a searchable emoji picker, like the one on your smartphone.

The company said the new feature has been rolled out for some users today and will reach everyone by the end of September.

The new system gives users several ways to get the emojis, and Google has listed those on its website.

Apple Watch and iPhone to focus on 17 health and fitness areas, tells the brand: What to expect

With iOS 16 and watchOS 9 this fall, Apple Watch and iPhone will offer features that focus on 17 areas of health and fitness, from heart health to sleep, women's health, mobility and more, according to the tech giant. Apple users can now store over 150 different types of health data from Apple Watch, iPhone, and connected third-party apps and devices. They can also choose to share certain types of this health data with loved ones. These features, available in nearly 200 countries and territories, provide users with high-quality data gathered throughout the day and night, said the company. As pandemic show us the importance of being fit and healthy, Apple is creating devices and services packed with "science-based technology" that equips people with even more information and acts as an intelligent guardian for their health, "so they are no longer passengers on their own health journey", according to Jeff Williams, Chief Operating Officer at Apple. The company feels drawn to this work not only because of the opportunity to help advance human health but "because we are driven by our principles to devote talent, resources, and expertise to where we can do the most good." "We believe passionately that technology can play a role in improving health outcomes and encouraging people to live a healthier day," he said in a recent Apple Health report. The Cupertino-based company said that its application programming interfaces (APIs) are enabling third-party developers to create new solutions that promote healthy lifestyles and innovation in health. "There are now tens of thousands of apps on the App Store that use our HealthKit API, so they can incorporate data users choose to share from the Health app to offer innovative health and fitness experiences, with rigorous privacy and data security protocols," according to the report. With users' permission, these apps can also contribute data back to the Health app. Apple recently collaborated with Stanford University in the US to build the Apple Heart Study, which was a first of its kind in the medical community and the largest virtual cardiac clinical study during its time. "It paved the way for Apple's work with some of the world's leading institutions to build three first-of-their-kind research studies to advance the science across women's health, hearing health, heart health, and more," said the report. Health institutions are using Apple devices, APIs, and frameworks to strengthen the relationship between physicians and patients with meaningful data, and enable care from anywhere. According to the report, health organisations and insurance companies around the world have collaborated with Apple to integrate Apple Watch in their wellness programmes to promote healthier behaviours and improve individual health at a large scale. "Our work primarily falls into two categories: personal health and fitness features on Apple Watch and iPhone, and the work we are doing with the medical community to support research and care," said Williams.

Vodafone Idea customers cell data records allegedly leaked: Should you be concerned

After a cyber-security research firm claimed that call data records of around 20 million customers of Vodafone Idea (Vi) were leaked and accessed by cyber-criminals, the telecom operator has denied the breach. Cyber-security research firm CyberX9 claimed in its report that the call data records of 20.6 million postpaid Vi customers were leaked due to vulnerabilities in the company's systems. The report claimed that data leaked included call time, duration of the call, from where the call was made, full name of the subscriber, address SMS details and roaming details. However, Vi denied the claim, saying that there was no data breach and the report is "false and malicious". The company said that it learnt about a "potential vulnerability in its billing communication" and that "was immediately fixed" and a thorough forensic analysis was conducted to "ascertain there was no data breach". Vodafone Idea said that it performs "regular checks" and audits are conducted to strengthen the security infrastructure. CyberX9, however, said that the company's claim that they have conducted a forensic audit is absurd. According to CyberX9, call logs and other data of millions of Vi customers have been leaked for the past two years, which was accessed by hackers.

Google now allows developers build apps that work across devices: Heres how

Google has launched a new cross-device software development kit (SDK) that allows developers to build apps that work across Android and non-Android devices. The cross device software, compatible till the Android 8 version, is now available with a developer preview for Android phones and tablets, and will arrive later for Android surfaces and non-Android operating systems. Users can also share an app's current state with the same app on another device and start the app on a secondary device without having to keep the app running in background. The initial release contains a set of rich APIs focused around the core functionality of device discovery, secure connections, and multi-device sessions, said the company. With device discovery, you can locate nearby devices, authorise peer-to-peer communication, and start the target application on receiving devices. Secure connections enable encrypted, low-latency bi-directional data sharing between authorised devices. Multi-device sessions enable transferring or extending an application's user experience across multiple devices. "This SDK allows you to focus on what matters most -- building delightful user experiences and connecting these experiences across a variety of form factors and platforms," said Google. The software also enables task handoff where the user starts a task on one device, and can easily continue on another device. "In addition, apps will not have to declare or request runtime permissions for connectivity protocols, and the user can allow apps to connect to only the device they selected," said the company.

American researchers develop durable coating that kills Covid virus

New York, Aug 27 (IANS) There may soon be a new weapon in the battle against Covid in the form of a durable coating, thanks to Indian-American researchers, that can quickly kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces, and keep killing them for six months or longer.

The coating, which is clear and can be brushed or sprayed on, gets its durability and germ-killing power by combining tried-and-true ingredients in a novel way.

It uses antimicrobial molecules derived from tea tree oil and cinnamon oil, both used for centuries as safe and effective germ killers that work in under two minutes, according to the study led by Anish Tuteja, a professor of material science and engineering at University of Michigan, published in the journal Matter.

"Disinfectant cleaners can kill germs in only a minute or two but they dissipate quickly and leave surfaces vulnerable to reinfection. We do have long-lasting antibacterial surfaces based on metals like copper and zinc, but they take hours to kill bacteria. This coating offers the best of both worlds," said Tuteja.

The research team included associate professor of materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering, Geeta Mehta and materials science and engineering PhD students Abhishek Dhyani and Taylor Repetto.

The coating's durability comes from polyurethane, a tough, varnish-like sealer that's commonly used on surfaces like floors and furniture.

The coating proved deadly to SARS-CoV-2 virus, E. coli, MRSA and a variety of other pathogens.

It killed 99.9 per cent of microbes even after months of repeated cleaning, abrasion and other punishment on real-world surfaces like keyboards, cell phone screens and chicken-slathered cutting boards.

The coating could be a game changer in traditionally germ-laden public spaces like airports and hospitals.

"The antimicrobials we tested are classified as 'generally regarded as safe' by the FDA, and some have even been approved as food additives," Tuteja said.

"Polyurethane is a safe and very commonly used coating. But we did do toxicity testing just to be sure, and we found that our particular combination of ingredients is even safer than many of today's antimicrobials," he mentioned.

The coating could keep killing germs for six months or longer before its oil begins to evaporate and reduce its disinfectant power.

But even then, said Tuteja, it can be recharged by wiping it with fresh oil; the new oil is reabsorbed by the surface, starting the cycle again.

Tuteja estimates that the technology could be commercially available within a year, as it has been licensed to Hygratek, a spinoff company that Tuteja founded with assistance from Innovation Partnerships at the university.

The University of Michigan has applied for a patent based on this technology.

Shopping on Twitter can bring individual or societal harm to users

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS) Twitter shopping, which allows brands to list items for sale and tag products at the top of a merchant's profile, has content moderation risks and can lead to 'individual or societal harm', the media reported.

According to an internal company memo, obtained by The Verge, several elements of Twitter's e-commerce tool are categorised as "high" under "risk assessment".

"One high-risk concern is that merchant-generated fields like shop names and descriptions could be used by bad actors in harmful ways," read the memo.

Unlike Instagram, Twitter users can't buy the product directly on the platform as clicking on items for sale takes them to the merchant's website.

A key upcoming feature of Twitter's shopping is shareability, and the memo also listed this feature as high risk.

It said the shareability feature "could lead to harmful content being amplified further, increasing the visibility of content that violates Twitter rules".

"Shareable Shops therefore increase the likelihood that users may see violative Shops, or violative goods contained in a Shop," the memo read.

"It may also incentivise bad actors to amplify harmful or violative goods by tweeting and sharing their own Shop."

A company spokesperson said in a statement that the memo "was part of a new feature assessment led by the product trust team".

"We're always working to improve the safety of our service and that is particularly true for the addition of new products and features," the spokesperson said.

Twitter's shop feature allows anyone with a professional account selling items in the US to manually add products for sale to their profile.

NASA gears up to send a megarocket to deep space on Aug 29

Washington, Aug 27 (IANS) The US space agency is geared up to send its debut Space Launch System (SLS) mission called Artemis I into deep space on Monday that will perform a long orbit around the Moon before coming back to Earth.

The uncrewed Artemis I mission has a two-hour launch window that opens at 8:33 a.m. EDT (6 p.m. India time) on August 29 from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39B in Florida in the US.

Artemis I will lay the foundation for a sustained long-term presence on and around the Moon.

"The SLS rocket and integrated Orion spacecraft will help us get a feel for what astronauts will experience on future flights. Artemis I is an important step in NASA's long-term goals for space exploration, paving the way for us to land the first woman and the first person of colour on the Moon," the space agency said in a statement.

The primary goal of Artemis I is to thoroughly test the integrated systems before crewed missions by operating the spacecraft in a deep space environment, testing Orion's heat shield, and recovering the crew module after reentry, descent, and splashdown.

The US space agency last week identified 13 candidate landing regions near the lunar south pole, as it prepares to send humans back to the Moon under the Artemis programme in 2024.

Each region contains multiple potential landing sites for Artemis III, which will be the first of the Artemis missions to bring the crew to the lunar surface.

Some environmentalists are sadly anti-human: Elon Musk

San Francisco, Aug 27 (IANS) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Saturday slammed some environmentalists for being "anti-human" when it comes to increasing nuclear power generation that could replace fossil fuels in the future.

In a tweet, Musk said that the countries should be increasing nuclear power generation.

"It is insane from a national security standpoint and bad for the environment to shut them down," said Musk.

A Twitter follower replied, saying that nuclear is clean, efficient and could replace fossil fuels entirely if it was embraced but is not happening "because so-called environmentalists aren't pro clean energy, they are anti-human".

Musk posted: "Some (environmentalists) are indeed sadly anti-human".

A clean energy advocate, he has said time and again that it's a mistake to stigmatise nuclear energy, especially as renewables like solar and batteries are still ramping up.

In July this year, he said that "I'm actually pro-nuclear as well".

"I think nuclear has a bad rap. People shouldn't be shutting down nuclear power stations, in my view, unless they're in a location that's prone to natural disasters. In which case, you know you can't just be like, 'we're just waiting for the real but once in a century situation'," he said during an interview on the 'Getting Stoned' podcast.

"Like the Fukushima situation. Well, you know there's a lot of tsunamis and stuff, so it's probably not great to have nuclear power where there's natural disasters. But for example, in places like France or Germany and many parts of the US, there's really no meaningful risk of a natural disaster that could affect nuclear power plants. So we shouldn't shut them down in that case," Musk had stressed.

According to him, efforts to shut down nuclear power plants are "crazy" and "madness."

San Francisco, Aug 26 (IANS) Mobile phones will connect to SpaceX's new Starlink satellites next year, providing around 2 to 4 Megabits per second connection (total) across a given coverage area, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have announced.

To provide this service, the companies will create a new network, broadcast from Starlink's satellites using T-Mobile's mid-band spectrum nationwide.

This satellite-to-cellular service will provide nearly complete coverage almost anywhere a customer can see the sky, US telecom carrier T-Mobile said in a statement late on Thursday.

This will help people text, send MMS messages, and even use "select messaging apps" whenever they have a clear view of the sky.

The service is scheduled to launch in beta by the end of next year in "select areas".

"More than just a groundbreaking alliance, this represents two industry-shaking innovators challenging the old ways of doing things to create something entirely new that will further connect customers and scare competitors," said Sievert.

According to Musk, Starlink V2, launching next year, "will transmit directly to mobile phones, eliminating dead zones worldwide".

"Note, connectivity will be 2 to 4 Mbits per cell zone, so will work great for texting and voice calls, but not high bandwidth," he tweeted.

Musk said that Tesla will also use the new technology for the premium connectivity feature in its electric vehicles.

Leveraging Starlink, SpaceX's constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, and T-Mobile's industry-leading wireless network, the carrier plans to provide near complete coverage in most places in the US, even in many of the most remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cell signals.

"From the middle of Death Valley to the Great Smokey Mountains or even that persistent neighbourhood dead zone, T-Mobile and SpaceX have the vision to give customers a crucial additional layer of connectivity in areas previously unreachable by cell signals from any provider," said the company.

The vast majority of smartphones already on T-Mobile's network will be compatible with the new service using the device's existing radio.

"The important thing about this is that it means there are no dead zones anywhere in the world for your cell phone," said Musk.

In addition, the CEOs shared their vision for expanding 'Coverage Above and Beyond' globally, issuing an open invitation to the world's carriers to collaborate for truly global connectivity.

WhatsApp for iOS beta grants admins the ultimate delete option: How it works

After announcing the ability to retrieve deleted messages on its latest beta for iOS update, Meta-owned WhatsApp is now releasing a feature that lets group admins delete any message in the group. The feature has only been rolled out to some lucky beta testers, so it will take some time before reaching all other accounts, reports WABetaInfo. "If you are a group admin and you cannot delete messages sent from other participants, please wait for a future update because more activations will be following over the coming weeks," the report said. The report mentioned that it is a significant feature for group admins because they can finally moderate their WhatsApp groups better. In addition, when a message is deleted for everyone in the group, all other group participants can see that a certain group admin has deleted the message. Recently, the platform started rolling out the ability to watch Status directly from WhatsApp's chat list for iOS users. The beta version 22.18.0.70 is bringing the ability to view Status updates within the chat list. It has been released to certain beta testers, and therefore, it is still not available to everyone.

Google AI deems dad as a potential abuser for taking naked photos of his toddler: Full story

Tech giant Google's artificial intelligence (AI) has reportedly flagged parents' accounts for potential abuse over nude photos of their sick kids. The father said that after using his Android smartphone to take photos of an infection on his toddler's groin, the tech giant flagged the images as child sexual abuse material (CSAM), citing the NYT, The Verge reported. The company closed his accounts and filed a report with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and spurred a police investigation. It highlights the complications of trying to tell the difference between potential abuse and an innocent photo once it becomes part of a user's digital library, whether on their personal device or in cloud storage. The incident occurred in February 2021, when some doctor's offices were still closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the report, Mark (whose last name was not revealed) noticed swelling in his child's genital region and, at the request of a nurse, sent images of the issue ahead of a video consultation. The doctor wound up prescribing antibiotics that cured the infection. Mark received a notification from Google two days after taking the photos, stating that his accounts had been locked due to "harmful content" that was "a severe violation of Google's policies and might be illegal." Like many internet companies, including Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, Google has used hash matching with Microsoft's PhotoDNA for scanning uploaded images to detect matches with known CSAM. In 2012, it led to the arrest of a man who was a registered sex offender and used Gmail to send images of a young girl.

Love memes A new report reveals you are not alone and here are its insights

The Indian smartphone users are spending 30 minutes a day on consuming memes and 80 per cent have increased meme consumption in the last year, a new report showed on Monday. While most users enjoy memes as a good way to release stress, 50 per cent expect their meme consumption to increase, according to the report by strategy consulting firm Redseer. "The shareability of memes makes them popular among groups with the same interest or even globally because most people find them relatable. Thus, it comes as no surprise that in just the last year, close to 80 per cent have increased meme consumption," said Mrigank Gutgutia, Partner at Redseer. Memes are now at the peak of the entertainment sector. To keep up with this rising demand, meme creation platforms are crowding the market, indicating that monumental growth is on the cards for this industry. "Ninety per cent of consumers are open to creating memes themselves, indicating large latent demand for meme creation apps," said Gutgutia. Social media is the primary source for access to memes, followed by word of mouth from friends and family. "Social media has allowed everyone to try their hand at content creation, thus, this has paved the way for the rise of meme creation apps and platforms," the report mentioned. People want to consume or create memes for brand building and as a creative outlet. "An important aspect that makes memes attain such huge popularity in a short period of time is that any individual can connect to them -- and this works great for brand building and marketing," the report added.

How to check the data tracked by Instagram and TikTok using InAppBrowser

As the debate grows about tech companies and apps tracking your data, here comes a website that can reveal how platforms like TikTok and Instagram may potentially see your sensitive data, including address, passwords and credit card information, without your consent. The website, named InAppBrowser.com, has a tool that will let you know how popular social media platforms are injecting "JavaScript code into third-party websites that cause potential security and privacy risks to the user". According to the tool's developer, Felix Krause, InAppBrowser.com has a simple tool to "list the JavaScript commands executed by the iOS app rendering the page". "To try this tool yourself, open an app you want to analyse, share the url, tap on the link inside the app to open it and then read the report on the screen," he mentioned. InAppBrowser.com is designed for everybody to verify for themselves what apps are doing inside their in-app browsers. "I have decided to open source the code used for this analysis, you can check it out on GitHub. This allows the community to update and improve this script over time," Krause said in a blog post. He earlier warned that Chinese short-form video app TikTok may be monitoring all keyboard inputs and taps via its in-app browser on iOS. "TikTok's In-App Browser injecting code to observe all taps and keyboard inputs, which can include passwords and credit cards," he warned. TikTok said in a statement that Krause's conclusions about the company are "incorrect and misleading". "Contrary to its claims, we do not collect keystroke or text inputs through this code, which is solely used for debugging, troubleshooting and performance monitoring," the company said.

Chinas RedAlpha hacking group is reportedly spying on Indias NIC: Whats at stake

A hacking group allegedly backed by the Chinese government has been attacking governments, NGOs, news publications and think tanks globally -- including India's National Informatics Centre (NIC) -- sending them emails which, once opened, were used to steal their login credentials. The group known as 'RedAlpha' has consistently spoofed login pages for NIC, which manages wider IT infrastructure and services for the Indian government. The hacking group weaponised some least 350 domains last year alone. The China-sponsored hacking group spoofed organisations such as the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Amnesty International, the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), Radio Free Asia (RFA), the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), and other global government, think tank, and humanitarian organisations that "fall within the strategic interests of the Chinese government". According to a report by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, the group has also engaged in direct targeting of ethnic and religious minorities, including individuals and organisations within Tibetan and Uyghur communities. "In recent years RedAlpha has also displayed a particular interest in spoofing political, government, and think tank organisations in Taiwan, likely in an effort to gather political intelligence," said the report. The China-based hacking group targeted individuals via emails containing abasic PDF files with links to the phishing sites, typically stating that a user needs to click the link to preview or download files. Over the past three years, RedAlpha continued to conduct credential-phishing activity using large clusters of operational infrastructure to support campaigns. "In late 2019 and early 2020, the group likely shifted away from older infrastructure TTPs exhibited in public reporting, such as the registration of domains through GoDaddy and hosting on Choopa (Vultr) and Forewin Telecom infrastructure," the report revealed. The researchers observed RedAlpha consistently register domains spoofing Taiwanese or Taiwan-based government, think tank, and political organisations. "Notably, this included the registration of multiple domains imitating the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the de facto embassy of the United States of America in Taiwan, during a time of increasing US-China tension regarding Taiwan over the past year," they said. RedAlpha's activity has expanded over the past several years to include credential-phishing campaigns spoofing ministries of foreign affairs in multiple countries. A Chinese government spokesperson told the MIT Technology Review that the country opposes all cyberattacks and would "never encourage, support, or connive" to carry out such activity.

Xiaomi NoteBook Pro 120G, Smart TV X Series 4K India launch has been announced: What to expect

It looks like Xiaomi India will be revealing some new products on August 30. The company has already teased some of the products that will be coming out. The Xiaomi NoteBook Pro 120G laptop and the Xiaomi Smart TV X series will be coming up on August 30. Let's look at these upcoming Xiaomi products in more detail.

Xiaomi

"Fast Fluid Fantastic" is written on the teaser page for the Xiaomi NoteBook Pro 120G. This means that the laptop could run quickly and smoothly. The teaser image of the laptop looks a lot like the ones from 2021. Xiaomi hasn't said anything about the specs of this laptop.

Xiaomi

We don't know exactly what the 120G name means, but it might refer to a 12th-generation Intel processor or a screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Since the last generation of Xiaomi laptops came with 11th-generation Intel processors and 65W fast-charging technology, the new NoteBook Pro 120G is likely to improve in these areas. The teaser also hints at what the NoteBook could look like. We think it might be a slightly changed version of the RedmiBook Pro 15 2022, which came out in China in March.

Watch whatever you want in high resolution because there’s a TV specially designed for you. Experience #YourNewView is here with #XiaomiSmartTVXSeries 4K! Know more: https://t.co/PWjFI1nssX pic.twitter.com/vUpLsBYPsr

— Xiaomi TV India (@XiaomiTVIndia) August 21, 2022

The teaser doesn't say much about the Xiaomi Smart TV X series though. It just says "4K Your New Resolution" and the release date.

When will Nothing Phone 1 receive Android 13 Heres what Carl Pei has to say

Not so long ago, Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, and known for his innovative designs, unveiled the Nothing Phone 1. Now there is some confusion over when precisely Android 13 would be released for the Nothing Phone 1, despite the fact that the company has promised three years of upgrades.

Launched with the promise of "good" Android compatibility, the Nothing Phone 1 has been met with mixed consumer reviews. Starting with Android 12, you'll get OS upgrades for a full three years and security patches twice a year for the next four years. It's comparable to the warranty terms for OnePlus devices.

However, Android 13 is now available and being rolled out to Pixel phones and in beta testing for smartphones from OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and more.

Meanwhile, Nothing hasn’t announced the Android 13 update schedule for Nothing Phone 1. Carl Pei provided an intriguing response to the question by stating that a phone is "more than simply its specifications, functions, and version numbers."

Though that makes some sense, it is hardly the statement that will win over or please its current and prospective customers. Although the rate at which software is updated isn't the deciding factor in whether or not a user enjoys their phone, it is an essential feature of any smartphone. In many cases (say with iPhones), it’s a significant selling point. Nothing boasts that the gadget offers "just the finest of Android" and a "perfected" experience on its website.

When there are still software issues with the current builds, answering a reasonable query like this might be perceived as a little off-putting, and Nothing's update commitment has already fallen behind most of the competitors. Max Weinbach has been tweeting about his first impressions of the Nothing Phone, noting problems like the phone's inability to auto-rotate.

Whatever the situation, we expect Nothing will provide an update on its intentions for Android 13.

WhatsApp may soon include Undo option to retrieve deleted messages: How it could work

After putting out the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.18.0.70 update, which lets you see status updates right in the chat list, WhatsApp is now giving some iOS beta users a way to get back messages they accidentally deleted.

WhatsApp might add a new feature that will make using the app better. WABetaInfo said that the messaging platform owned by Meta is working on a new feature that will let users get back deleted messages in a chat. Reports say that the feature was seen in WhatsApp's latest Android beta release.

How you could restore deleted WhatsApp messages

WhatsApp

According to the screenshot in the report, when users delete a message in the chatbox, they will see an "Undo" option. But this option will only show up for a few seconds, just like when we delete an email in Gmail.

Notably, only beta testers will be able to use it, and if you are one, you can go to the Play Store and update your app. Even if you don’t see the feature right away, we urge you to be patient as all beta testers should be getting it soon. It is likely to be rolled out in stages.

In another report, WABetaInfo said that the messaging platform is also working on a feature to hide a user's phone number from people they don't know. Note that it is being tested only on Android.

WhatsApp recently also launched a new app for Windows. This new app lets people use WhatsApp on their Windows OS-powered computers as they used it on their phones.

CERT-In points out multiple Google Chrome vulnerabilities: What you need to know

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has warned users about multiple vulnerabilities in Google Chrome for desktop that can let hackers gain access to their computers. The multiple vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and Security restriction bypass on the targeted system, according to an advisory by CERT-In, that comes under IT Ministry. "These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to use after free in FedCM, SwiftShader, ANGLE, Blink, Sign-In Flow, Chrome OS Shell; Heap buffer overflow in Downloads, Insufficient validation of untrusted input in Intents, Insufficient policy enforcement in Cookies and Inappropriate implementation in Extensions API," the cyber agency said. A hacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted requests on the targeted system. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and Security restriction bypass on the targeted system, said CERT-In. "The vulnerability (CVE-2022-2856) is being exploited in the wild. The users are advised to apply patches urgently," said the agency. CERT-In also warned about bugs in Apple iOS, iPadOS and macOS and a "remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a victim to open a specially-crafted file". It also found multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco products again, which could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code, information disclosure and cross site scripting attack on an affected system. The nation's premier cyber agency had alerted about bugs in Cisco products in the recent past too.

PM Modi wants India to have energy independence and self-reliance in its EV sector

In another thrust to his electric vehicle (EV) dream, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the country needs to be 'Aatmanirbhar' (self-reliant) in its energy sector. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 75th Independence Day, Modi said that from solar energy and bio fuels to adoption to electric vehicles (EVs), the country needs to "reach the next level for energy independence". Modi's push for EVs came as the electric two-wheeler industry is facing scrutiny over battery explosions and fire incidents that has led to several government probes. In a recent webinar on 'Make in India for the World', the prime minister asked the industry to tap growing opportunities in areas like semiconductors and EVs. "Aatmanirbharta is all the more important if we see from the prism of national security. The private sector needs to be more 'vocal for local'," he emphasised, asking the industry to boost domestic manufacturing in the EV sector. In his recent meeting with Suzuki Motor Corporation's senior advisor Osamu Suzuki in Tokyo, Modi discussed investment opportunities in India, including setting up production facilities for electric vehicles and batteries. The prime minister has emphasised that by 2030, India's economy would cut the intensity of greenhouse gas emission by 45 per cent of what it was in 2005. NITI Aayog has forecast that by 2030, nearly 80 per cent of the two- and three-wheelers, 40 per cent of buses and 30-70 per cent of the cars will run on electricity. India's transition to the electric mobility system can save Rs 20 lakh crore by 2030 on oil imports alone.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 75th Independence Day, Modi said that India's 'Techade' is here with 5G and local thrust on semiconductor and mobile phone manufacturing. "We are bringing revolution through 'Digital India' to the grassroots levels and soon, every village will be connected digitally as we usher in the 5G era," Modi said during his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort. The Prime Minister is likely to officially launch the 5G network during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) on September 29. "From digital payments to mobile and semiconductor manufacturing, we are in a time of change that happens in an era. The digital age is changing around us. Using Apple AirTags for allegedly stalking ex-girlfriend puts a man behind bars

A man has been jailed for nine weeks for allegedly stalking after planting a covert Apple AirTag tracker on his ex-girlfriend's car, media reports say. According to DailyMail, Christopher Paul Trotman, 41, harassed his ex with constant phone calls and questions, before ordering an AirTag on Amazon and gluing it to her rear bumper to track her every move, a court heard. The Apple device uses a Bluetooth signal so a linked-up iPhone can find its location. Swansea Crown Court heard how Trotman of Gwynedd Avenue, Townhill, Swansea had been in a relationship with the victim for over 10 years before it broke down in August 2020, with the woman describing his 'controlling' behaviour during their time together. Prosecutor Tom Scapens said Trotman would bombard the woman with questions about her whereabouts after their break-up and even offered her money to quit her pub job, because he could not cope with her talking to other men. Then, in March this year, the victim bought a new iPhone and received a notification when she got in her car asking if she wanted to connect to an Apple AirTag. At the time, she did not know what it meant and ignored it. Later that month, she received a text from Trotman accusing her of sleeping with other men, the report said. He also asked her if she had enjoyed a night out on Swansea's Penderry Road that night, but she had no idea how he knew where she had been. His former lover discovered what he had done after her daughter also started getting notifications on her phone about connecting to an AirTag. A search of Trotman's Amazon account showed he had bought several Apple tags the previous month and the victim decided to examine her car. She found one of the tracking devices glued in a cavity under the rear bumper. The police were contacted and the AirTag was handed over.

Elon Musk envisions a self-sustaining city on Mars in 20 years

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that he hopes for a self-sustaining city on the Red Planet in 20 years' time, as his space company prepares Starship to take people and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond. Musk said in a tweet: "I hope there is a self-sustaining city on Mars in 20 years!" Last month, the world's richest man said he was optimistic that "humanity will reach Mars in your lifetime". "Without a common goal, humanity will fight itself. The Moon brought us together in 1969, Mars can do that in the future," Musk had said. The Tesla CEO had stated that making life multiplanetary will help back up the ecosystems on Earth and added that apart from humans no other species can transport life to Mars. Referring to Biblical patriarch Noah who built an Ark that survived the great flood on Earth, Musk said his Starship models will be "modern Noah's Arks", that can save "life from a calamity on Earth". SpaceX's Starship consists of a giant first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 metres) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship. Both elements are designed to be fully reusable, and both will be powered by SpaceX's next-generation Raptor engines, 33 for Super Heavy and six for Starship. Last week, it was reported that the much-awaited first orbital test flight of the Starship vehicle will not lift off this month as it has not yet received the necessary launch clearance. Earlier, the launch was scheduled for July and was shifted to August later. On August 2, Musk said that a successful orbital flight is probably "between 1 and 12 months from now." According to a radio-spectrum licence application that the company filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), SpaceX is targeting a six-month window that opens on September 1 for the highly anticipated mission.

Uber Rewards to be discontinued soon: Know details here

Ride-hailing platform Uber is closing down its loyalty programme, Uber Rewards, with users being urged to sign up for the Uber One subscription to get regular Uber and Uber Eats discounts. Launched in 2018, Uber Rewards is a free programme that lets you rack points for every dollar you spend when hitching a ride or ordering food through Uber and Uber Eats, reports The Verge. You can then use these points to earn discounts on future rides or deliveries. The more points you earn, the better perks you get -- earning 7,500 points. However, Uber is not offering a replacement for the programme, and there is no another way to consistently earn perks and discounts unless you pay for an Uber One subscription, which Uber launched as a replacement for Eats Pass last year. A $9.99/month (or $49.99/year) subscription comes with perks like free food deliveries, up to 10 per cent off of "eligible" Uber Eats orders, and 5 per cent off on rides from top-rated drivers.

YouTube Channel Store for streaming services reportedly in the works

Google-owned YouTube is working on to launch an online store like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video to let users subscribe to other streaming services and the new platform could be available as early as this fall. According to a report in Wall Street Journal, the YouTube 'Channel Store' will allow consumers to choose streaming services through the main YouTube app. The company is already in talks with entertainment companies about participating in the YouTube marketplace. The YouTube online store "has been in the works for at least 18 months". YouTube TV already has this capability for HBO, AMC+, Showtime, and many others. "YouTube is discussing splitting subscription revenue with streaming partners, although the terms may vary widely for each partner," the report mentioned. The pitch is that the new YouTube channel store would offer great marketing for streaming services because "consumers could watch trailers of shows or movies free on YouTube and then easily pay to subscribe to the service". YouTube in 2020 for the first time discussed launching an online streaming video store. Walmart is also planning to add streaming services as a new perk to its membership programme.
